  • A story with its roots in the Mabinogion, a collection of Welsh stories, featuring a host of mythological Celtic characters inhabiting a world of murder, curses and revenge, engaged in the eternal struggle between male and female.
This play was broadcast in May 1991, on BBC Radio 3 on a Friday evening, and instantly became one of my favourite things, so much so I found it was being repeated on the following Sunday (as was the custom of the R3 Friday play at that time) I went out and bought a cassette tape so i could record it. The play was 105 mins long and the average tape was a C90, but I managed to get a BASF C100 Chrome Dioxide tape, which was still a bit shorter than the play. Consequentially, I missed a small section in the middle (when i turned the tape over!) and about a minute off the end including the closing credits. I've edited this together as best i could, the tape being 26 years old when i first recorded it digitally, and has deterioated a bit. But I wanted to get it up for others to hear, and wonder if anyone else remembers it? Loved the characters, especially Mary Wimbush as the pig Cerridwen.
I did at one point contact David Calcutt, the writer of the play, wondering if he had a complete version, he kindly responded to my email saying he wasn't sure, but that he might have somewhere, and I think he said he would also look into contacting the BBC to see if they still had it, but i never got a reply after that. Still, its on YT now and I hope people will enjoy it, regardless of the sound quality and the fact is missing its proper ending!
I should point out I claim no Copyright on this recording, but where else can you get the chance to hear things like this?
