I love that look at your thought process behind putting together that new force. I realize that I followed roughly the same steps when planning my 40K Alpha Legion force. I love having a n insight at that kind of planning.
Every time I look at the problematic praetor I think, cut away the axe head, make it a double handed Maul and give him a Chaplin style helmet. A Chaplain would be the only place that much bling works. And the chunker, slower more solid feel could work for a Chaplain too.
Just to note; GW splitting the shoulder pads in two with these HH models isn't the first time they've done it. A few of the Plague Marines in 40k also have their shoulder pads split in two as well.
7:17 is also reduces mold lines on the ball-things on the should pad, making them look nicer. I'll take a seam I can easily fill in, if I need to at all after using plastic cement, over having to scrape mold lines off a ball.
Re the ravenguard shoulder pads - you should put scales over the raised central areas on them for the salemanders - would evoke the image of wearing a scaly mantle.
Go with 1 black & 1 green shoulder armor. Also, for a nice bit of detail in the armor pop in some black on the flexible joint parts. It makes the green jump out so much more and adds "complexity" to the eye with a tiny change. Or you can just oil wash the joints to give them a depth.
I'm very excited about this! I think with the Praetor that has a top knot, if you could maybe take his right shoulder, the one he's leaning forward with and showing to us and drape that in drake skin that would be cool. Also, for the Raven Guard shoulder pads, you could make the bonding studs more conical shaped to make them differ. Also plays up the whole close combat, pragmatic feel for them, cause I can imagine something like a breacher marine shoulder bashing an enemy if they got too close. And for painting, a trend with Salamanders painters and players I've seen is to put a little of the Badab war yellow and black color scheme on something like a kneepad or shoulder pad and it usually comes out looking very good. And please for the love of Vulkan's bald head, use an earthier shade of green, this weird shade of neon green they're painted as in 40k can be way too light
You need to get a hold of the land raider door set #2 for the Spartans it’s perfect for the firedrake!!! I got lucky and manage to find one pretty excited about building it for sure!!
Suppose someone were to take a similar approach with this box set but for the Ultramarines, would you have any tips or parts in particular you would recommend?
It's a video all to itself right there, but many of the same rules apply, do you add embossed detail? Sculpt stuff? Smash them with transfers? What colour pallet, blue and gold? Blue white and gold? Blue black and gold, black and gold? What sort of doctrine, classic tactical spam, terminator elite, nemesis chapter etc. they help to determine the colour. I'm doing these videos for all the legions anyway, but Dark Angels is first and they are tonight if I finish editing.
@@TheOuterCircle thanks for the reply! And I totally agree, it's a big question😅 I'll wait and see what you cook up for the Ultramarines relating to this box.
Im excited to see your take on this!! Will be following for sure! An idea with the terminators, maybe some chain mail on the shoulders instead of the leather might look really good too!!
I think for the Praetor with the axe, you want to turn him into a Centurion Company Champion. Make him an Executioner - He spent time with the Iron Hands which resulted in him having a firey temper. Replace the shoulder pads, if possible, replace with 2 studded pads like the rest of your army. Clip the circle things around his chest. Convert the chainmail loin cloth and chainmail on his shoulders to be lizard skin. Paint him olive/drab green with burnished bronze trim and paint the gems as opals (shiny and black). Possibly make his chest piece fiery after you clear away some of the clutter. For the head, I would go with the bare head from the FW kit where his face is mangled (back story for him - he is showing the wounds he received on Istvaan while the rest of his army covers their wounds and faces as they are trying to heal. The champion has not healed and does not wish to heal. He only wishes to seek vengeance on those that betrayed him). If you don't want the executioner look, you're going to need to find a hammer to replace the axe - I think that is the toughest part to fix because of the position of the hands - it would be a HUGE hammer. As for the backpack, I would replace the skulls with the Primaris Back Pack kit - the funeral pyre piece. If you buy that upgrade pack, you could use the pliers or dangly bits from there too. You won't need the shoulder pads, hammers, or heads though. Maybe just use that for inspiration and print them?
I am planning on picking up a mix of most marks and smashing them together to have a mark 5 feel for my dark angels. As I want them go look like they are fighting low on supplies and gear. They are throwing together what ever they have. Why I took my hobby knife and cut a line on my praetors chest. Which gave him a battle damage feel. Over I am very proud of him. That one model gave me an idea for a cool force. I even named my praetor Raguel. Which is also the name of my successor chapters chapter master. This is because my chapter master is named after my praetor.
Great thought process and ideas. Will you do some quick montages of the build and paint process rather than just the finished project I know you said when you get the minis you will put up the next video? Thanks.
I’m using some of the mk6 and terminators for my homebrew NightLords and paint them up like they left the siege of terra and been scavenging anything and surviving the horrors of the ghoul stars
I wanna do alpha legion but I don't quite know what to do with the preators. One idea is to do one as a very ornate face of the legion type guy while making the other the secretive spec ops type.
For axe praetor, swap head to pyroclast head (Maybe give it a crest, I don't like them so I wouldn't; could also do a bald helmetless head), replace the skulls on the on the rack with 1-5 brazers (Because fire safety < the cool burny things for salamanders), clip the bottom of the cloak to make look ragged skin and add scales to the upper parts. I think those changes and he would fit into just about any salamanders army.
This sounds like it will be a good project to follow along. I’m leaving my Word Bearers alone and starting a DA force to have a loyalist force. Was thinking along similar lines to you such as decals over sculpted detail and how to mak the MKvi and other mos look well used and a force that has been through the heresy. Love the idea for the shoulder pads as well, that will really make you force stand out.
I think his 'Banana Knife' could be a Falchion (Mediaeval), or maybe a 'straight' Kopis (Ancient Greek). Abraxas is also a music album by Carlos Santana. 😎 Love your Horus Heresy videos. You were responsible for me collecting an Imperial Fists force, and your 'Getting Started In Horus Heresy" series was invaluable when it came to what I needed for my 'Sword & Board Force'. I have a ton of Breachers & Legion Cataphractii with Storm Shields, supplemented by Templar Brethren. They're usually led by either Alexis Pollux or Sigismund, depending on how many Points we're playing. All the best for the future, and please keep up the good work. You're making an old Scotsman happy with your honest opinions & 'saltiness'.
My NL army uses the decal sheet and I see no problem with it because every dude looks different. Some have red shoulder pads, some blue with lightning, some black with red decal, some black with white decal, some with studs some with monochrome legion symbol decals some with non-monochrome legion symbal decals, some with 3D legion symbol, some MK3, some MK4, some silver trim, some gold trim, ... nobody needs multiples of 10 legion symbols unless that army is a line assembly build.
I use Death Guard transfer sheet's tactical markings since Night Lords transfer sheet doesn't have them. Other than that I use 3D legion symbols for veterans & terror troops.
I painted a lot of flames on my calth marines. Also the axe praetor I could see adding a thunder hammer, head swap and a drake scale cloak. Thats probably what I'm doing with mine
Can you share where you got those salamander files? or did you make them yourself? Cause I could really use some of those bits and I sure as hell ain't buying then from FW
@@TheOuterCircle Cheers mate. I am going to make 10 pyroclasts aswell as 10 firedrakes from the HH box. Wasn't a big fan of the FW sculpts so this will make it easy for me to tweak them however I want :)
One of my biggest gripes eith the mk6 kit is the lack of variety. Unlike the old tac squad box the number of possible poses seems much more limited. I think this is because the sprues are sets of 5, instead of 10. Also for some reason there are very few alternate arm poses, whether its pistols, or hand signals etc. This might be because of the amount of the sprue taken up by the two types of bayonettes
I actually carve my own version of those Raven Guard Mor Deythan/ Dark Fury pauldrons using the standard MKVI bonding stud type. I made a squad of Mor Deythan in different poses than the way they’re sculpted, and so many of the pauldrons provided wouldn’t fit the new pose, and I had no other choice. They actually are hard to tell apart unless you’re really familiar with the original sculpted parts- they have fewer studs for one, and the white wing portion is flat instead of 3D. The studs are on a raised strip like the originals, you just have to shave the black part a step down. With a little practice, I made a lot of them for use on other special characters, and I dare say they look pretty decent. It’s worth a try- thanks for the video. 👍🏻
I'm planning on doing a thousand sons army, mostly with whats in the box (minus praetors) for monetary reasons. Wondering your opinion on using the beakie heads instead of the psychic hood heads?
IIRC in Macca's original video on TS he said he thinks they really benefit from the hoods as it's a lore thing for them really. I'm also starting a TS force so in the same shoes as you. I'm planning on getting a good mix of mk4 and mk2 TS heads, unless they release a really cool specifically mk6 one soon that I really want. 🤔 Also one idea I had for sergeants is that I'm gonna use the kopesh you get from the khenetai upgrade kit instead of the regular power swords. Maybe the chest plates too to signify artificer armour (unless they look weirdly out of scale vs usual chestplates)
@@cheesemarine thats a good idea with sergeants. And while Id like TS mk6 helmets, theyre probably going to be alot like the IF ans SoH "mk6" helmets which dont look mk6 at all.
@@James80312 yeah exactly, it's annoying there's not more of a road map tbh. As I don't want to use beakie heads much myself. However, if I'm waiting months for official 'TS Mk6 heads' then I'll probs use the existing ones instead.
I'm starting my 30k Ultramarines with two Deimos Rhinos with FW doors and the UM dread. I also picked up their breacher squad upgrade kit just because I really like the shields. Probably not going to run them with the swords, but the axe is definitely going to find it's way onto something in the army. I'm sitting on most of the infantry until their new heads come out. I'm also trying to find some decent quality torso upgrades from somewhere in the meantime. I'm going to change a lot of the shoulders to something else, but I'm probably not going to use too many embossed ones. I like infantry markings to look painted on rather than every average dude in the army having fancy embossed icons. I already painted the UM Praetor so I plan to convert the sword Praetor into some other kind of HQ for fun. I thought he might make a good looking champion with a Gladius, some different shoulders, and the belt from one of Calgar's bodyguards instead of the loincloth. Might test my luck with filing off some of the skulls and stuff off him.
i did go and see if the vat hit hh harder in aud but it hasn't at all as this time it was only vated once plus tax. if it was x2 vat it would be up in 650 aud
Project sounds like it's gonna turn out braw, maybe add a thunder hammer to the praetor with his right arm in the air it'd go well imo with the shield on the left idea
Can we hope for a video series about the new legion specific rules? Cause I've been delving into those these last few days and I'm conflicted on what could work or not
Could someone with experience in HH advise me if it’s better to run 2 tactical squads of 20 marines or to run 2 of 10 marines and use the other ones to create special weapons squads?
Option 2! 20 man tac squads are quite unwieldy on the table. For deathguard I see a lot of people run them in squads of 14, it's fluffy but it's about the ideal size. A few extra bodies to get them across the table alive and not too big to manoeuvre. Still leaves you with at least another 10+ for heavy or support weapons.
I stared at these models just like you have. I've studied the MK6 example of the Iron Warrior and I'm just not seeing it. I don't think I can use this box. It SUCKS for IVth Legion. If I'm gonna get into this game, I'm gonna need to use something else.
So one of the things I’ve printed before and will again for this force, is MKV heads, both with and without studs. MKV heads and some tweaks to the shoulder pads and you will have a different feeling force.
I'd be interested in seeing your thought process for selecting troops, weapons, etc etc. B/c I look at all the options and with little practical knowledge, it's difficult for me to find see "fine/good" options. I just wanna stay away from "bad" choices, as there always seems to be some combos of stuff that are just bad. I'm not saying I want/need the most optimized stuff, as lore and fun is a big deal.. but there is also normally just really poor across the board bad choices I'd prefer to not fall into. Just basic info like.. make sure you have a unit able to handle XXXX the best options are this sort of unit is normally AAa, BBB, or CCC with A being better at this, and B being a good choice if your playing ZZZ style, and C if you want something all around but not great at anything.
@@_lewtz Raven Guard rocking massed jump troops/bikes will be devastating, but the classic sneakie beakies with combi-plasma and such did not perform well for me in 2.0 play testing.
I'm gonna try doing the same. My plan is to print rivets and cables to put on the legs and some mk5 heads. that's probably easy enough to not be daunting
Salamanders are currently my 30k force and I love the good bois. I am still debating how to run them through. The possible flamer predator spam seems hilarious in the covenant of fire RoW. Aesthetic and play style wise, I want my guys affected by the massacre where they're loyal but altered in how they go about their tactics especially when their numbers are low at this point in the story.
that is awesome. I am ummijg and arring about getting this and either continuing with my salamanders from 40k or start something new. I can say for salamanders. zenathol plus 2 coats of liquitex phthalocyanine Green and 1 yellow is really nice. then just an oil wash of blue for the crevisis.
@@-Cheif No the Spartan is like a stretch limo version of a land raider tank it's bigger has more las cannons too it's like a MK 4 panzer to a Tiger Tank.
When I first saw these overly busy praetors It changed my mind about getting the box. So instead I went to Tortuga Bay and got a pack of 20 Corvus armors. Funny thing is, this store recently release a new marine who look similar to the big axe welding Praetor except reasonable size, not busy with details and looks like it is in mark 3 armor instead of 6. It feels good to not hesitate to go see somewhere else when GW does not offer a product to my liking. I do not intend to enlarge my IronWarriors force with Corvus armor so I will probably start a small force painted as Howling Griffons just for the hell of it. Why? Well with this Horus Heresy box GW clearly show they care more about appealing to nostalgia in the design rather than giving us the mark of armor that would have made the most sense for heresy. So might as well do something not directly related to Horus Heresy with my Mark 6 armors and appeal to nostalgia in my own way. When I think of old 40k I think of that one White Dwarf picture of a big army of Howling Griffons I saw in the past.
@@Stepper1990 I was a bit disappointed in them tbh, I was expecting good things from the guy who made them because his channel focuses more on kitbashes but it was pretty generic

Redwarden Miniatures has some very good Salamanders MKVI helms that look very Salamanders style. Close to the forgeworld ones you mentioned. Pretty cool way you went through brainstorming an army, thinking about how to really represent them well!
isnt too much pyroclast helmet a bit too much ^^? when you take the helmet of an elite squad and wide spread it in the end you cand find the elite because everyone looks pyroclast (a bit alpha legion tbh ^^)
Salamanders would better of using something like the custodes pyrithic spear and infernus firepiike salamanders are chapter of renowned weapon makers and armour craftsmen their practically a weapons foundry with the elite troops As for horus heresy just think nocturne's pdf force or army would be pretty well armed just mix a few marine demo companies to lead the force for brute fire power and go burn down some traitors That would of been a interesting angle later in the heresy oh well
tbh how is everyone gonna use 40 marines.. they should've just put 20 marines, 1 praetor, 1 other HQ, 10 tartaros, 10 cataphractii and the heavy support.

that's a heck of a lot of scales to sculpt manually - i think i would make a silicone mold/texture roller for such a task.
You could also make a mold of pre-set "clumps" of scales with blue stuff and just make them in bulk that way, cut them to fit as needed
Maybe the axe praetor could be given a hammer instead the axe and given a more rustic, ancient style redesign?
A good source of gold rune decals is the iron warrior's part of the chaos Marine sheet. They look great and often go on eBay cheap.

Might test my luck with filing off some of the skulls and stuff off him.
I've been desperately looking for 3D files for the mor deythan shoulder pads. Anyone know where I can find them?
Looking forward to this. Do you do painting videos/streams?
i did go and see if the vat hit hh harder in aud but it hasn't at all as this time it was only vated once plus tax. if it was x2 vat it would be up in 650 aud
Project sounds like it's gonna turn out braw, maybe add a thunder hammer to the praetor with his right arm in the air it'd go well imo with the shield on the left idea
Can we hope for a video series about the new legion specific rules? Cause I've been delving into those these last few days and I'm conflicted on what could work or not
You will be getting that series, yes.
@@TheOuterCircle YAY thanks!
@@guywatkins5590 thanks for the advice mate! I will do that 🙃
Did you find an stl for those studded shoulders?
I stared at these models just like you have. I've studied the MK6 example of the Iron Warrior and I'm just not seeing it. I don't think I can use this box. It SUCKS for IVth Legion. If I'm gonna get into this game, I'm gonna need to use something else.
So one of the things I’ve printed before and will again for this force, is MKV heads, both with and without studs. MKV heads and some tweaks to the shoulder pads and you will have a different feeling force.
@@TheOuterCircle thanks, I am gonna keep mulling it over. I wanna get in the war, but my imagination is failing me at the moment
That's fantastic I'm very new to yours heresy I'm wanting to do night Lord's could you do a video on how to start a army and what to get next please
I did in HH1, and I’ll have to for 2.0
I'd be interested in seeing your thought process for selecting troops, weapons, etc etc.
What's your thought on Raven Guard in HH2.0, considering your experience with playing them a ton.
@@_lewtz Raven Guard rocking massed jump troops/bikes will be devastating, but the classic sneakie beakies with combi-plasma and such did not perform well for me in 2.0 play testing.
I will be trying to convert the bulk of the Mark VIs into Mark Vs. where to start with that idea I wouldn't know....
I'm gonna try doing the same. My plan is to print rivets and cables to put on the legs and some mk5 heads. that's probably easy enough to not be daunting
@@Cornivius yeah that's fair enough, I actually completely forgot I could use my 3d printer for the rivets and heads. Cheers mate.
I'm doing that as well, using torsos and heads from tortuga bay. It's more money but they'll look great in the end.
Greeting OC, can you give me your opinion about the Dornian Heresy?
Read it, didn’t hate it, there were a couple of plot points I didn’t like, namely the Thousand Sons arc, but otherwise it’s an interesting concept.
You'd could probably convert that Spartan into a land raider easy enough .
Aren’t those the same thing?
@@-Cheif No the Spartan is like a stretch limo version of a land raider tank it's bigger has more las cannons too it's like a MK 4 panzer to a Tiger Tank.
@@Flamethrower1942 ooooooooooooooooooo. I never noticed the difference before lol. Now it looks like night and day
When I first saw these overly busy praetors It changed my mind about getting the box.
I got the reference.
I like salt but I LOVE these videos !!!
something I noticed with the "influencers" armies is that they all look pretty much identical to each other bar some minor conversions and the colour
Actually I liked the take on the World Eaters one
I’d imagine they had instruction from games workshop what they had to do
@@welshwargamer2066 maybe, but it's a bit of a shame, because In my opinion it made them look very bland
@@Stepper1990 I was a bit disappointed in them tbh, I was expecting good things from the guy who made them because his channel focuses more on kitbashes but it was pretty generic
@@chadmrrsn I guess all of them were running against the clock to have the force finished on time. Some of them were not even completed
Don't know if you already have a scheme for the charcoal skin but HH master class book's recipe was abaddon black, leadbelcher dryrbrush & then nuln oil until it was good.
This is how it should be done. How it’s been done for years.
The only one I’ve seen put actual effort into it is Pete the war gamer.
Or prophets of flame
Just throw some crackle paint over the loin cloth and cloak... boom. Scales
No, I’ll sculpt a piece of sample cloak, make a press mold of it, and then stamp that design into other cloaks.
I just 3D printed my studded pads as one piece
Same, I did them as the Raven Guard style pads because they look fantastic.
Salamanders would better of using something like the custodes pyrithic spear and infernus firepiike salamanders are chapter of renowned weapon makers and armour craftsmen their practically a weapons foundry with the elite troops
As for horus heresy just think nocturne's pdf force or army would be pretty well armed just mix a few marine demo companies to lead the force for brute fire power and go burn down some traitors
That would of been a interesting angle later in the heresy oh well
when you paint those scales do a color that pops away from the green the paint schemes for the forgeworld salamander schemes are so ugly to me
For the night lords I guess you could do 5 squads of 8 lol.. but yeah that’s kind of stupid
You really can't, because minimum squad size is 10.
@@TheOuterCircle wait that’s the minimum lol, I didn’t realize it was that different from 40k
Word bearers 😭
tbh how is everyone gonna use 40 marines.. they should've just put 20 marines, 1 praetor, 1 other HQ, 10 tartaros, 10 cataphractii and the heavy support.
Ur not a tool GW can manipulate into giving ideas u don't agree with Mac so I think u deserve a trip to warhammer world and free content at the very least brotha.

White scars are the easiest to build from this. Also, they nuked fulmentari terminators! I just started 24th chapter....fuuuuuuu
why didnt you just buy the rules seperatly if you "didnt want" the marines in the box?
Core rules aren't sold separately.
