I don’t know if you realize it but you misspoke on the density of air. It is higher at lower altitudes not the other way around. I am not sure about extreme conditions with temperature inversions if this would cause a slight deviation in this inverse relationship between altitude and air pressure for a narrow altitude range.
From what I understand lasers are quite a bit cheaper to use than air defense missiles. Lasers just cost a few dollars to use, while these missiles cost in the hundred thousands to in the millions of dollars to use. Also, lasers have the advantage of immediately hitting the target. They travel at the speed of light. Air defense missiles take a little while to reach the target. I'm not an authority. I'm sure both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages.

We were very concerned about Russia's new generations of air defense missiles - the S300, S400, and S500, but we think we can handle them. The Russians can make some very good weapons, and there will probably be quite a bit of back and forth as new iterations of each of these systems come out and we produce new iterations of our own.
How about hypersonic missiles?? Can lasers be used against hypersonic missiles and has this been tested and proven effective??!!! China has operational hypersonic missiles so using laser to shoot down ballistic missiles will be meaningless against hypersonic missiles.
