Nice Video. Littel mistake: In Your Blog the line is: "docker run -d -p 9000:9000 -v /portainer/data:/data -v /var/run/docker.sock: /var/run/docker.sock portainer/portainer" there is a space after sock: wich causes the installation to fail. In your vid the line is correct. THX
I don't have a VNC button to proceed to installation. I only have Start Edit Delete Devices and Clone??? There is an important part of process missing - removing path for CD and changing resolution on VNC to 800x600. Why would you skip things like that? Kills the whole purpose of a tutorial...And my portainer does not start at it's ip address for some reason too
Hi great video i got the docker running and. I think the portainer is too but I can’t access it through the ip what would you do to troubleshoot this ?
TrueNas Scale which has support for docker containers. Why not just use that? Or is there a big difference between it and core? (new here, want to change my omv5 server to true nas scale)
I was doing OK right up until the post install of Linux. How do you get to the screen at 3:56 and find the IP to use for SSH? All I have is an Ubuntu desktop. Thanks.
Yeah he lost me there too, very unclear. I installed open ssh trough terminal on the desktop mode, then connected just like he did with the username@ip
I've been doing basically the same thing, however I opted to run AlpineLinux as the docker host. Been running it now 6 months, without issue. Ubuntu Server is bloated for the task
@@GetMeTheGeek TBH it was the very first time I used it. I use it for actually nothing else that Docker host. I setup a friends TN box also running Docker again with Alpine, and he's running a mail server using containers, Dovecot, OpenSMTPD, etc. and it's all ticking over wonderfully. Very easy to install, setup, and a doddle to get Docker running. Also FWIW, it's got a superb IRC channel on Freenode
I just switched to TrueNAS and I am facing one problem after another.... Docker... installation looks like some time ago on windows - want docker, create VM to be able to run docker....seriously? I wonder - if I have NAS with large storage, and I have to create VM to be able to have docker, and I have docker container that is exposing i.e. nexus services then and requires large storage, how I can easily use sotrage that I have on NAS level from Docker level? Is there any native way to do that? Or shall I use NFS to do that??
If been pretty disapointed so far with docker performance with Truenas scale, lancache is not even consistently hitting peek bandwith as if its being bottlenecked, even tho the machine is running at is faster then my synology nas, and that while it was running faster on my synology nas which is way slower like 3 times slower least.
After the install finished, I clicked "Reboot now" (from within the installer in VNC) and ran into the same issue (VNC would always bring me to the installer and my username+network settings appeared to not save). To fix this, I powered the VM off (from TrueNAS VMs page), then clicked into Devices for the VM, and deleted the CDROM device (which still had the iso media selected). After doing this and re-starting the VM, it booted to the installed version and my settings/user were there, allowing me to SSH. One other call out would be to also remove the VNC device once you are able to setup SSH, as it poses a security risk if your network is not locked down.
@@ThomasLaw1Yes, I found that I had gotten rid of the CD but still had it want to install. But like you I found out if I shut it off and reboot it that did the trick! Good to know about the VNC security issue. I got stuck with setting up an admin account with Pointner and so I gave up and I'm going to have an IT guy walk me through it in Thursday and see if he can set me up right across the board. This video just KEPT getting me frustrated. His edits take out key parts for us NOOBS :-)
As always, another great TrueNAS video!
sudo !! = run the last command with sudo in front of it.
Awesome tutorial, I love how concise it was.

Thanks, I will take a look
Thank You, I had stopped on that step
Thanks Kevin!!! You are a TrueNAS expert!
how to share a folder on Truenas to a docker? could you make a tutorial about this? thanks!
Thank you so much for posting this walk through. First time really diving into Linux, and with a VM to boot.

Great video 👍 thanks for the speedy tutorial
Is there a preferred way to access files from a truenas network shared dataset to VM? Use NFS? Or something else?
You are an awesome teacher.
Upgrading soon and this will make my life a bit easier, thanks!
Done all this, great. Then how do I get into the program that is running in the docker? dumb q. I know , can't find anywhere

I did not get the IP address to SSH after the login. I tried remaking the VM several times but the problem is still the same.

It is still in beta

He's using Ubuntu server here, I think.

AlpineLInux is a good choice.

With any luck it will get better when it moves the production from release candidate. It is a young product. 🤷♂️
When I click VNC nothing happens. I get no new tab nothing. Any ideas?
Check your pop up blocker @Titch1987
how to solve powershell connection refused when connecting to ssh ubuntu server ?
Great information
you have typo in your blog post "docker..com"
curl -fsSL download.docker..com/linux/ubuntu/gpg | sudo apt-key add -
also, "deb \[arch=amd64] - \ is leading to - E: Malformed line 52 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (type)
Nice video. Thank you very much.
Thanks, I will look at the blog post.
does it applies on truenas scale?
No, this is for Core
Спасибо!
How to start portainer automaticaly after reboot vm?
add restart: always in compose or --restart always with the docker run command.
Anyone else have the issue of not being able to get in after install. It just wants to keep reinstalling the server.
