I like how in the show, David Cross is a straight actor playing a gay character pretending to be straight while married to Portia De Rossi who is a gay actress playing a straight woman married to a gay man.
His physical acting is overshadowed by the brilliant writing and delivery, especially how he tries to not show physical pain. The gulp after he burns himself on the cornballerer was done just right. "Am I touching something..." lmao

There's a scene where he actually tries to give his cellmate, a Neo Nazi by the name of White Power Bill, therapy, and White Power Bill kills himself. I should also mention Tobias goes to jail at some point.
The genius in George Michaels facial expressions during Tobiases educational talk is underrated. Especially around 9:21, with the deep deep concentration.
One of my favorite Tobias moments was in the episode where he directs the high school play, and when he mentions that in Shakespeare's time the woman's roles were played by men, two of the students just bolt out of the room.
I just realized that he broke all three rules of FOX comedy at once. Nobody would have gotten the joke at the time; he did it specifically just to piss them off lol.
Fox had 3 (absurd) rules for comedy- see rules above (the actor that played Tobias talks about this in an interview). The creative team and Fox mgmt went back n' forth right before shooting the very 1st scene due to Tobias' mustache. So of course they finally got the ok on the mustache and the writers being who they were took it beyond just the no mustache rule and incorporated the other 2 rules (again see above) all in one scene. Arrested Development had a lot of funny non obvious jokes like that. i.e There's a scene where Michael says to his dad "You're no Brad Garrett" well it was due to Jeffrey Tambor (George Bluth) loosing an Emmy to Brad Garett or...
he's one of the funniest comedy characters ever. definitely the best on this one. plus the gay denying is copied by Mac from its always sunny in Philadelphia just as well
