  • www.motorbeam.com finds out 5 reasons not to buy the Yamaha R3. A rival to the Kawasaki Ninja 300, the R3 is similar to the Kwacker in many ways but still there are reasons not to buy one. Besides not being on sale in India anymore as it doesn't meet BS4 emission norms, the Yamaha R3 is expensive but still lacks equipment.
The Yamaha R3 is priced at around Rs. 4 lakhs (on-road, Mumbai) and is brought to India via the CKD route. It is still slower than the KTM RC 390 in 0-100 km/hr acceleration and lacks a slipper clutch, ABS and ride-by-wire throttle which the Katoom gets as standard.

Lots of Yamaha owners are feeling hurt after seeing this video. Let's go over all the points once again.
*The R3 is more like a Fazer 300 even though it is called the baby M1. It doesn't get USD front forks, perimeter frame, aluminum swingarm and a link-type monoshock, some of these things are available on cheaper bikes like the R15 and R125.* - This is purely a fact, we have mentioned what's missing on the R3 (something cheaper Yamaha bikes get).
*The R3's mileage is on the lower side, in fact it is less frugal than its immediate rival, returning 24 kms per litre.* - The Ninja 300 returns 2-3 km/l more than the R3, both bikes' mileage was tested back to back.
*The Yamaha R3 costs Rs. 4 lakhs in Mumbai which makes it too costly for a locally assembled bike.* - FACT
*With the R3, Yamaha hasn't reinvented or innovated and the bike's hardware is an imitation of the Kawasaki Ninja 300 but it still lacks a slipper clutch. There is no ABS either.* - The Ninja 300 came in 2011 with the same hardware. Lack of slipper clutch and ABS is another fact.
*The R3's pillion seat isn't that great and it doesn't have any grab rails either.* - It does lack grab rails and we did not find the pillion seat to be comfortable.
So why this hatred guys? Nowhere have we said that the Yamaha R3 isn't a good bike or it lacks in performance or its handling is bad. We have spoken about lack of equipment but never said that the handling is poor or the bike is less capable. Just imagine what the R3 would have been with top drawer hardware.
We deserve better, why does Yamaha offer ABS abroad and not in India? Why do other markets get the R15 V3.0 way before us? Why won't Yamaha launch a middle-weight in India when its two main Japanese rivals already have. Let's not get offended because we own a Yamaha. You don't like this video concept tell us, we will do something about it, but let's not spread hate, biking is about brotherhood, not calling each other names.

MotorBeam exactly motorbeam, you guys make true and quiet informative videos, thatngives a buyer a lot on knowledge about a specific vehicle before putting their money on that vehicle, and I don't know why people get offended by your videos, as if they have built those vehicles.
exactly this is what all these companies are to be questioned about, why they dont introduce a better hardware in India as they do in other countries,we are not fools, same goes for royal enfield as they have introduced abs, rear disc brake in other countries and and not in India, why why why.. all the best for you next videos and cheers! love you guys

Nice points team. Now after riding the R3 for 43K kms till now, I think I'm qualified to make some points. here are my points:
    1. No R DNA : I don't know how and where you tested the R3, but be sure, It doesn't lack handling prowess. If you want to really know about that please hit the tracks and you'll know it. Asking you not to make baseless points. :)
    2. Low Mileage: On the highways I get 32-33 kmpl and in cities 25-26 kmpl. You want anything more than that? Please buy a Splendor. Please do a proper test ride and then comment on this. :)
    3. High Price: R3 costs 4L INR, true !! But it's around 30-40K INR less than N300 and much more pocket friendly in terms of servicing which comes to around 1 INR/km excluding fuel. You need less than that from a twin-cylinder bike, then you might not be suitable for a twin-cylinder bike and only and single-cylinder will satisfy you. And yes, that service cost is way less than the service of both TNT300 and N300. One small example: Chain sprocket kit of N300 costs around 12K INR and for R3 it costs less than 6K INR...and yes for me it lasted 41K kms. Again, more better research was expected from you guys.
    4. Lack of Hardware: Really !! You meant it really !! As if the other bikes in the same segment are loaded with hardware. And that's they're corner junkies. Please get your facts straight. Learn about the engine more and hardware involved there. Again, more research expected. :)
    5. Pillion Comfort: Again, guys, please do some proper research. My wife had a 800-km round trip as pillion with me without any complaints about pillion comfort. The pillion also should know how to sit correctly as a pillion. And then you can't expect a comfy pillion seat like a cruiser from a sports tourer, ain't it? Again, please do proper research. :)
I get it that you guys just need a video to upload. But then a little research will not do much harm, isn't it?

Dear Motorbeam, please dont make videos for the heck of it.Except lack of ABS, everything else is baseless. It is a yamaha, and a twin for god's sake. You cant expect them to price it like a dominar 400. it handles well, has good ride quality and 25-30 kmpl os the segment standard. Or have you experienced 50 kmpl in a 300cc 40+ bhp bike? My 390 gives me 20 kmpl when ridden hard. Yzf R3 is a good product. Please dont degrade a motorcycle without putting enough miles on it.

Most of you guys are thinking of the 2018 Yamaha R3 but in reality the 2016 Yamaha R3 really laked in a lot of features. I completely agree with Faisal and Team Motorbeam. But when they will make a similar video on the newer R3, all of the dislikers will like it. Truth always hurt but you all should better be aware of when and where the circumstances meet.
    Like
    1) R DNA was missing because it was not as aerodynamic as the present day R3
    2) Mileage used to fall but Yamaha improved it.
    3) Slipper Clutch and Dual Channel ABS was actually missing on the old R3 and they are basic safety features every cautious Indian Rider should have.
    4) Yeah 4 Lakh rupees is really expensive for any middle class person who generally earn 30K to 40K and has to look after the family.
    5) No grabrail is really a terrible fault for any pillion. Should be given.
Love your Work Faisal, Dhanil, Parth and others of Team Motorbeam. Don't listen to these ****holes. You researched well and you got a subscriber and a liker. Keep UP........

  • @lakshmans770
    @lakshmans770 7 лет назад +3

Guys, The only reason you have drawn so much flak is that you have stretched those 5 reasons covering nitpicks. Agreed ABS is a much needed addition. But please tell me, what sort of additional equipment does the r15 carry over the R3? Hell those two bikes aren't even the same kind.
R3 is a sports tourer which does both things pretty darn well if not the best. Example, look at the RC 390 - great on tracks? yes. has equipment? Yes but would a guy buy it for touring and complain about its small tank size and non-tourer ergonomics?
In that case the main negatives you could have mentioned could be about the headlamp (low beam) conking out frequently, lack of ABS, stock tyres. Focus on real issues guys. Lack of a grab rail isn't that big of a deal breaker right? Why not mention the same point about lack of grab rail for the r15 as well? You did mention pillion comfort?
After the de-merge of kawasaki and bajaj the LT ownership costs are even more in favour of the R3 compared to kawasaki. So what are your real negatives now?

    • @MotorBeam
      @MotorBeam  7 лет назад +1

If the R3 is for sports touring, why does it have the R badge, why not just call it the Fazer?

Nevermind, you guys are talking about just for India. My bad. That's sort of dumb that they don't have the same options available to the entire world. Especially with many more people using motorcycles in India as daily drivers than in the US. As well you guys definitely need it more with many of your rural roads being poorly maintained, gravel, or just dirt. My R3 has ABS and I paid about $700 for an aftermarket slipper clutch and another $100 for a quick shifter.

R3 is a sports tourer and not a sports motorcycle. Yamaha made real sports motorcycle in 80's and 90's with Yamaha FZR 250R and FZR 400RR. Both had inline 4 cylinder engine with Deltabox chassis. FZR 250R was 45+bhp revving up to 19,000rpm and FZR 400RR was 65+bhp revving up to 14,000rpm. R3 has shitty underpowered 2 cylinder engine making only 42bhp at crank and 34 bhp at rear wheel. R3 has huge speedometer error of 10kmph to 12 kmph. Both FZR 250R and 400RR were lighter than R3. Yamaha has actually gone in the reverse direction for 400cc and below. Pity new riders think R3 is sports motorcycle.

      tech team:
      1. No riding comfort.
      2. Small fuel tank so frequent fuel stops.
      3. Low fuel mileage (if you ride it hard)
      4. High compression engine i.e it heats up and you can feel it on your lower thighs.
      5. Joke of a pillion seat.
      6. Less refinement levels.
      7. Isn't comfortable doing low speeds at higher gear...you have to shift down for low speeds to avoid engine knocking.
Well these are the reasons for not getting one... but list of reasons why you should get one is really long.... depends on what you're looking for in a bike.
BTW i own a RC390 and i couldn't be happier with my choice.... its pocket rocket fun machine.

what do u expect from rc 200 or rc390 for this price ?? who gave abs and slipper clutch on this price ?? who gave this much power on 200cc -25bhp 390cc - 45bhp ???? who the fuck give this much ???
      do yamaha did these ????
1 - riding comfort - agree on rc but not that bad on small rides but if u go for long ride its bit hard.. u can take rest and go ( its about your mind set and will power to reach there) while you ride
2- Small fuel tank so frequent fuel stops. - on rc200 or duke 200 its much better compair to 390!! oky agree to that
3 - low fueal mieage - rc 200 -25bhp on this much power do u even expect milage ??? leave that on 390 do you even expect good milage on this much agressive engine ??? lol
4 - high compression on engine - old 390cc dude single cylinder 390cc- 45bhp it will heat up ! its common .. on rc 200 the engine dont heat up !!!
5 - pillion seat - yeaa the old rc200 and rc390 have a flat pillion seat but now they incress the pillion height much better now . the old seat not bad at all
and why did u choose rc390 then dude ??? you know that it wont be a comfort the bike made for racing track one if u are not comfortable on seating postition you should go for duke 390!!!

I’m not an R3 owner. But some of these points are questionable. Most R3 buyers in my country (U.S.A.) are new bike riders and shouldn’t be carrying a pillion until they gain more experience and maybe get a larger bike. It’s really marketed as a beginner bike for solo riders. As far as seat comfort most riders I know go with after market seats so that pretty much goes for any bike. Gas mileage? Eh... these aren’t the type bikes we go touring on. Mostly for commuting and a short fun ride here and there. Fuelly puts their avg mpg at around 60 which isn’t too bad for its 3.7 liter tank. I’ve actually toured on that type of tank range. My buddy was learning on a 1st gen ninja 250 several years ago and in an emergency it was able to haul my 200+ pound butt and his 150ish for a couple of miles. No I wouldn’t wanna test that weight capacity on the highway and we had to rev it to get to the power range but again...it’s not meant to carry that type of load on a reg. basis. ABS would be a nice addition but I’ve ridden 30 years without a bike that’s every had it. And adding it may constitute a price bump. I concede the marketing for it may be different in your country. And maybe your avg riders are more fit than our lard butts. :) But I just think the 300 was put in a slightly unfair light here. Kinda like comparing a lightweight fighter using middleweight standards.

Just rip the throttle all of a sudden and you will see the bike not holding the line and that is enough to say the tyres are the worst.
Rip the throttle more aggressively on a RC390 (even more torque) but still its holds the line unlike an R3.

The Ninja 300 is not called "ZX3R" similarly, the R3 is not a supersport, but a sports tourer. The 'R" name doesn't do it justice as it creates unrealistic expectations. The N300 and R3 do not compete with the RC 390. Even though they are in the same displacement class, they are very different bikes.
The only thing really wrong with the bike is the poor tyre choice (No, I don't want every bike in the world to have Metzler shoes, there is better touring rubber out there). The lack of ABS can be blamed on our government more than the companies since the only real reason why the international variants of these bikes come with ABS options is because it is required by law in many countries.
Neither Kawasaki nor Yamaha can be blamed for the pricing of their respective bikes because the RC 390, R3 and N300 cost pretty much the same elsewhere. These bikes aren't expensive, the KTMs are cheaper because they're manufactured here. That's just how it works.
These are my 2 cents on this topic.
PS: I own an RC 390 and honestly, I've never even considered the Ninja or the R3 since I did not want a sports tourer.

Why not take the 2020 YAMAHA R3 for a spin??? You're talking about the old 2015 model and bitching about it to create a clickbait content which has a controversial topic. And your comparison to the R15 BE, you do realize that the R15 V3 was launched recently in 2019,right? Why didn't you take that into perspective? It's a very old sports bike you're using and you're trying to compare it with the new age motorbikes. You really need to get a hold of the perspective of age. And I said before, take the 2020 YAMAHA R3 for a spin, then talk.

    To review your points:
-It is not costly. The bike itself is very cheap for what you're getting; and remember you're getting a gear indicator, fuel gauge, service light and many more things.
-It's MPG is not bad at all. In America, it gets around 50-60 miles per gallon, making the ability to go long amounts of time without having to keep getting fuel.
-It's a well rounded bike. For the price point you're getting you're getting a pretty solid deal on all the things you get. You can't expect it to be the fastest, lightest, best looking bike ever without spending tons of money, so I personally think you're getting a lot of features for the price point the bike is at.

I appriciate your points, but you must hear the owner's perspective aswell.
ABS-The Only genuine complain is the lack of ABS. That should be must in every bike over 150cc.
Pillion Comfort- I am a married man, and my wife is fairly comfortable in the pillion seat. Yes its hard compared to CBR's(my previous bike), but not that bad. She holds me while riding pillion. Grab rails would have been welcome, but not a deal braker.
Milege of 27-30kmpl is very much acceptable as per me from a twin cylinder.
Pricey it is, but the spare parts are very reasonably priced, which is an advantage over the much over priced Ninja 300.

  • @madmax_wanderer

disadvantages of the bike because reviewers want to show bike in dark side to.
    1) it was showcased as R DNA bike but since it's cost so high, one can't think of wheeling and stunting in every street and nukkad and guli.
    2) colors: colors are always green on other side guess that is green and orange are more favorable than flashy blue or pearl black. why is it becoming a head turner.
    3) R3 is very late in market like very very late. all the Bajajs and Hero along with suzukis, TV's and the Hondas and not the least RE are already thriving with multiple cylinder quarter liter or 300cc bikes in the market.
    4) bike has been recalled. that too twice. fucking 2 times. can you imagine. a company is so concerned that it is calling bike back even after 1.5 years in market but still such a sad quality right. a recall should never happen. rider should die on road, money should go in drain.
    5) have you heard it's horn, bloody hell that scooty horn, such a feminine look it has. no macho character. guess everyone should have that sumo horn.
    6) exhaust note: bloody hell look at Benelli man what an orgasmic note. just have erotic feeling by listening. such a shitty refined note on R3.
look at KTMs. bloody they give competition to 3 wheelers.
    sad R DNA.
at least they should have given a thump in R3.
    7) wonder why they have not given Gizmo TFT screen or ohlins suspension and brembo 4 callipers ABS. Yamaha should learn from Dominor and Mojo's, they have all such things and that too at puny price bracket. R3 such a shame in costly bracket.

Its 321cc engine gives great power, its front brake is fine--its single caliper stops the bike HARD! The rear brakes perform as you would expect for any rear brake--don't use it alone to try to stop the bike. And the fit, finish, and riding comfort on the bike are all great! Why on Earth anyone would gig this bike the way they did in the video is beyond me. The R3 is a great little BEGINNER bike.

I really can't understand the hatred against #MotorBeam here. The points spoken were facts. Every bike has pros and cons. R3 is one of the most refined bikes in India but not a true track natured bike. RC is a track junkie but cannot live with it as a daily commute. MotorBeam has expressed its opinions on something. You either agree or disagree. The final opinion will always be with the individual to choose the bike he wants. Just because you don't agree to the points highlighted here is really unfair to claim a channel to be doing biased reviews or paid reviews. You don't like the video, you always have the dislike button. I have owned my Duke for 3 years. There are so many shortcomings but I will love her forever for the good things she boasts of. So I request all the Bikers not to get personal here and take the review positively. I'm not asking anyone to agree with MotorBeam but do not accuse without any base

Like slipper clutch, ABS, perimeter frame, USD front forks etc. please go back in time and watch your own video of R3,RC & Ninja 300 comparison. Dont you feel it is strange that you praised Ninja 300 too much(fact being Ninja is almost identical to R3 in hardware except slipper clutch addition) despite the fact that Ninja 300 is the slowest, costliest and has the worst tyres among the 3?Your verdict was that Ninja tops the list, which by your expectations now(hardware), is surprising as RC390 beats any other bike

All these are like little unimportant reasons. Seat uncomfortable? If I'm spending a couple thousand on a bike seat is probably not gonna be on the top of my list

Looking for a budget-minded sport bike to buy as my first bike. Was looking at this one but it seems to have poor reviews, anyone have any suggestions to look at that have this style and look as cool?

R3 owner here, even though it doesnt have USD or abs or slipper clutch, its an awesome bike to own. why you guys are not talking about the maintenance ? the routine service costs less than 3k . can these rivals even imagine that thing ? and the spare parts costs around 1/10 of that of ninja or benelli. when you make a stupid video like this, keep everything checked.

I've just been reading through this comment section because I don't have anything better to do and it's so sad to see that instead of taking valid criticisms from people who took the time to watch your content you just toss everything aside and revert to calling them fan boys which somehow negates any arguments. It's quite childish, to be perfectly honest.

You can say anything about the bike to defend it's short coming but you can't deny or justify the price at 4Lkh for a locally assembled motorcycle considering you'll be spending more for registration and insurance. And by the way the price will likely be increasing with the new version with all it's update on a day and age where the Ninja 300 is starting to be affordable with it's decrease in price even after getting a major update which is ABS
    Thank you.

I feel like u ppl started asking for likes rather than concentrating upon the quality reviewing. May be u don't have to ask for that openly if it is there. Anyways keep it going👍

We ask for likes because readers aren't generous enough to give it on their own.
