I can still remember the first time I heard this song. Came on Q107 Radio as I was behind the wheel of my black 5.0 Mustang heading up Yonge street. Cranked it to 11.
This man could tour with Chris Stapleton right now and blow every man, woman and child away in the room with musical genius. How this track (and album) has stayed obscure for years eludes me.
Thia whole story was told to me lots of times growing up in the area. I knew witnesses kids, drank at the Walton hotel where it happened. But didnt learn about this song till 5 years ago from a guy i worked with in alberta.
I love this song and the studied the details of the Donnely's murders in Lucan before the song ever came out. It is a sad commentary that an american musician has a better pulse on the sad state of "justice" and law enforcement in our province. Even without music this could be expressed as very powerful prose as spoken words. That is the ultimate mastery of Steve Earle and his lyrical prowess
It can work in reverse. It took a Canadian, Gordon Lightfoot, to perform the definitive song about an American event: Detroit race riots of 1967. ruclips.net/video/DPXL3iEVnCM/видео.html
Justice in Ontario is coming 2 the Port Hope 8 soon!! We, the Port Hope 8 are waiting 4 a decision from the Justice Minister of Canada, seeking truth and justice once and 4 all !! Check out the Port Hope 8 Wikipedia, to the "cause celebre". In my sworn statement I stated "he saved our lives".
onlytheoriginals yes, i just found out it was re released last year...mick low said he was adding up-dates to it,,,,,,,,,my daughter=in-law had given him updates about her dad,,,,,could you tell me if theres updates on larry hurren ??, thx, im not able to get it yet
I seen the Hard Way concert 2 nights in a row back in 1990 or 91. So great to hear him sing this! 2 years ago I had him sign the Conspiracy of Brothers book that was one of the reasons he wrote the song❤️Love him
I did my thesis on those who have been wrongly convicted through the court system in Canada. I delved into shady practices by some...not all..law enforcement officers, detectives, even judges.... My case study was the Port Hope murders talked about in this song. I had read the book A Conspiracy of Brothers, written by Mick Lowe about the case. I was able to also do a phone interview with him😊
This is Jeff McLeod one of the accused, we have just made another application to the Supreme court, so the battle still continues. I dont know if you had heard but unfortunately Mick passed last month. I hope you received an A+ on your thesis.
@@jeffmcleod1184 OH wow! Crazy. I followed what I could.for a long time, tried to find out what happened to everybody. Sad to hear about Mick. He was so friendly and forthcoming. He had no problem chatting with a random woman calling him up to interview him.... Thank you so much for responding
@@jeffmcleod1184 ..., and yes I got the highest grade. Even after I argued points with the prof... who was way younger than me lol. Made him look bad...oops
@@jeffmcleod1184 thank you so very much! I was always very curious what had happened to everyone. Steve Earle I s one of the greatest writers of the modern era the problem is the country people thought he was rock.the rock people thought he was country. So there for he never found his niche in the record bizz, just goes to show how fucked the recording bizz is.....
this song has a lot of history for me. i went to a museum that talked about this event. turns out that the family were criminals who preyed on the community for years. i was a steve earle fan for a while and showed him to a now deceased friend who found this song for me
That depends on who you talk to, there were several factions who were feuding but the most balanced opinions came from the protestant postmaster and it does not seem as they were as criminal as the mob portrayed them.
His book Unrepentant is very good. I learned of the book Conspiracy Of Brothers by Mick Lowe at a Steve Earle concert around the time the Oka Crisis was going on. Steve should’ve done a video for this song.
Michael Chiviendacz ...Ya I hear ya bro..lets lock up 8 Choice instead of one self admitted shooter,,,this song rings so true judge was blind and jury was deaf..L,LR...TO ALL THEM......
+Kevin Howell yes great story about the wild west in southern ontario, they had a sister , i bet no one messed with her, ray fazakas the donnelly album is a good account of this story
He's a Prophet, no doubt!!!

DustDevl340 I just had bought the cassette tape and cranked it up going up the 404 in my 1987 5.0 black GT .brings back a lot of memories.
Steve sold better in Canada than the States...

Is mr Campbell still alive ?
Love Steve. He is heavy metal country. Awesome
Still love this tune. Introduced my wife to it today. She loved it, too. Made my day. Thanks for the post.

From what I've seen, Steve Earle loves visiting Canada. He spends a fair bit of time in Vancouver.
Apparently he used to ride up here. Maybe he still does.
I live close
Too close to home.

my all time favorite rock and roll Steve Earle song
Banging song!
Steve Earle I s one of the greatest writers of the modern era the problem is the country people thought he was rock.the rock people thought he was country. So there for he never found his niche in the record bizz, just goes to show how fucked the recording bizz is.....
I got to jump in. Life long fan. Have 12 of his albums. 2 DVDs. Seen him live. He goes from rock.....to bluegrass.
Record Biz forgot the fusion of Country Rock of the 60's/70's. Fortunately you have Steve Earle also Kentucky Headhunters to remind us.
ABOUT ONTARIO!
And it still goes on.....
Man this song is great but I gotta shout out to the drummer. Those snare hits are like the judges gavel pounding and really drive the song forward.
Drum production in the late 80s and early 90s was really something else.
This would be a great song to play loud when youre driving a Ford, Chevy or GMC truck with the windows down!
Oh yeah!! That'd be flipping amazing. I'm gonna do that this summer in my family's 1984 lifted orange and black chevy!
SMEXY 😊
Yoopers!! I over HERE
HELL YEAH...!

Damm chilling song.
The Donnellys were murdered in cold blood, and the killers were never brought to Justice. RIP.
Stompin' Tom Conners has a song about the Black Connely's
Err, that would be "Donnelly's" I guess! :)
Disgraceful
Some òlð things 😮
i met the brother played music with him
Older music was hard. Then he made a left turn
Steve Earle is in a class on his own. Only so called country guy played on rock radio. I love chris Stapleton but hes not Earle.
Port Hope Ontario Canada. The Walton Hotel. I think it is gone now. Turned into downtown condos.
nope, still there, was being renovated but developer ran out of money. Was called Queens at the time of the shooting.
Jumpin J's got it right
still no justice in Ontario
Its messed up that even after he admitted that he did it, his Brothers were sent up.
Michael Chiviendacz definitely not right!

Shannon Campbell my uncle was one of the 8 that got put away.

Great song, but they must have been fucked up on something when they mixed the snare drum four times louder than anything else on the track.
Nah that’s just hair metal goodness!!!
