One reason Oliver lied about himself was because he thought his stable, middle-class, suburban background was too drab and pedestrian to attract Felix and his family's interest. And he was probably right. He said as much "I gave you what you wanted." The hint of danger some really posh people crave by hanging out with people from completely the other side of the social spectrum. There's an element of glamour in it for them that there just isn’t in what they perceive as the mundane middle-class. Of course, the main reason he lied like that is because he was a sociopath.

Felix and his family seemed to like having "a pet" every summer, this time the pet devoured them

It’s many years between Oliver leaving saltburn and James and Elspeth dying. He was class of 2006 and James’ obituary said he died in 2023

I think killing them was not the original plan. I think originally he just wanted to be included and was just probing different was to stay. But that all fell apart when his lie was exposed to Felix. That’s when it shifted.
Was Oliver's plan always to kill the family or was it an afterthought once he realised he'd lost Felix? I'm not sure but one thing I am sure about is I love this movie.
I think Oliver taking Saltburn was his reaction to being rejected by Felix. If he can't have Felix, he'll have him on a spiritual level.

Personally, he just wanted Felix. Maybe he would've liked it if later on he and Felix got to live together in Saltburn, but then his plans failed. Felix found out he was a liar, Venetia lost interest in him, Farleigh came back, and the father got sick of him. Killing Felix was more premeditated since he wanted to see whether Felix would forgive him, but because he didn't, Oliver decided no one else could have Felix anymore. Everybody loved him, remember? Killing the rest of the family may have been an afterthought. At the end of the movie, Oliver at least got Saltburn for himself, I guess. But not the man he fell in love with.
since Emerald confirmed Oliver was in fact in love with Felix, i think it solidified for Oliver that he was going to kill him when he realized his relationship with Felix would never recover.
he knew he’d be sent home after his party and lose him.
i think his regret after killing Felix is what made him decide Saltburn had to replace Felix as the obsession, something to blur that infatuation with.
I don't think he really knew what he wanted. He just wanted to fill the emptiness.
Ollie decided to predate on the family when he was a debate partner w/Farleigh & first heard about the wealthy Cattons, esp. Felix. He had already observed their charisma & status in the courtyard. It was a crime choice of opportunity & the Cattons were unlucky to have come across his path. Mind games are intriguing for sociopaths as they are highly manipulative. I don’t think Oliver necessarily planned to kill them from the beginning but when he heard about the suicide of “poor Pamela” & the family’s callous conversation about her, that seemed to be a turning point for him where he possibly felt rage toward the Cattons. Sociopaths experience anger, rage, frustration and not much else. They can express feelings but they don’t actually have them. It’s a learned tool to “get by” socially & for manipulation. A “tell” throughout the movie was Ollie’s flat affect & inappropriate apathetic demeanor which usually indicates some sort of pathology (or medication). In the end, Oliver proved his superiority (which is important to sociopaths) by killing them all with impunity & they didn’t even see him coming… they had dismissed him out of arrogance (as they did w/everyone outside of themselves) as inferior from the beginning. They were all horrible people & I didn’t really feel any sympathy for them, which I think is part of the point. The Cattons were definitely narcissistic w/possibly some sociopathic traits but w/a more palatable veneer due to their socioeconomic status & good looks. Ollie knew them for what they were & decided to take what they had. The celebratory naked dance at the end was one of the few genuine expressions of himself during the whole movie. Great movie script and the actors are all so talented! So much to analyze & ponder… 🙂 Enjoyed your reactions!
Barry Keoghan is very good in “Dunkirk”. Btw, the character of Farleigh dodged a bullet; had he not been sent away, he might have had a stone in the pond as well. I really enjoyed this film, the visuals alone were breathtaking and I was intrigued by the sinister undercurrent of the story👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾😎
This movie is too disturbingly good. It had no business being so weird, intense, cringe and thought provoking
The deep red dining room in the "shut up and eat the bloody pie" scene looks very Dario Argento.
I read somewhere that the director, Emerald Fennell said that Elspeth probably caught covid as a result of flaunting restrictions and not taking it seriously, which makes a lot of sense haha
Yes! They make it clear in this world, COVID-19 definitely happened. Ending up on a ventilator in a medically induced coma is most definitely a complication of having COVID-19.
Ironic. Her germophobia is mentioned when Oliver first comes to the house. Felix tells him they have to stay cleanshaven and not wear piercings because of it. Dying from an infection seems like a cruel way that Oliver would kill her.
I enjoyed the film immensely. I thought it was really good and bordered on great. Loved the acting, the beauty and the build up. Agree that Oliver got more intense throughout and more of his other side came out over time. I feel like he may have loved Felix but hated him at the same time and that he may also have had a very unrealistic definition of love. The family's facade was well portrayed and I loved Rosamund as the mom and how she spoke. I also knew rumor of the more shocking scenes but for some reason they didn't shock me a lot. Maybe I wasn't surprised that Oliver would behave so weirdly. Glad you both enjoyed it.
Rosamund Pike lived in the Saltburn house all during the filming.

Emerald Fennell is Oxford educated and also acted on the BBC series Call the Midwives. She won both an Oscar and 2 BAFTAS awards plus Golden Globes for her work on Promising Young Woman with Carey Mulligan who was brought back as "Poor Pamela" in Saltburn.
Oh I thought she looked familiar. My parents got really into that show during Covid.
She also played young Camila in The Crown, and was a writer on Killing Eve.
Played the long game...at least 14 years from 2006 to COVID era...It didn't happen within one year.
At the end of the movie when Oliver danced, he passed the box that had all the family members inside like marionettes (also seen at the beginning). He now had put each funeral stone over each persons character - like a ’trophy’, he manipulated them all..
This movie, and the Saltburn house, was filmed in the UK here in Northampton where I live.
Love the film, fantastic from start to finish. First time seeing Jacob Elordi, he was great, and Barry Keoghan is fantastic every time I see him.

I think it´s a brilliant film! The different symbolism/signs like the stone for his father that hit the ground instead (cause he was still alive), the mom who almost choke on the pie, Venetia poured the wine in the glass and it overflow etc etc...Obsessed about the soundtrack too!
even Felix walking past the window foreshadows when they carry him past it after his death.

Probably in my top 5 of 2023. This has gotta be one of the best slow burn horror's in a long time.
I thought it was great at first. But I haven't stopped thinking about a movie so much after I watched it since Afterburn.
The film is reminiscence of --- THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY --- and just as beautifully shot. By the way, you NEVER disappoint !! ... As always, a fantastic review😍
That's weird. I said the same thing. I loved TTMR and when I figured out Oliver was using manipulation techniques that was the first movie that came to my mind. So good.
Love your guys’ reviews. However, I highly disagree with the comparison to Parasite because the characters motivations were vastly different.
In Parasite they are doing bad things because they are poor and trying to survive in a society that is actively pushing them down. Definitely a commentary on class.
Saltburn is about a sociopath who is only motivated by obsession and personal gain but tries to trick you into thinking he’s normal. Class as a theme gets pushed to the background once you realize what is actually going on.

After watching THAT, the character Felix was a breath of fresh air, lol.
Hopefully they don't try to typecast him as 'rich douche' for the rest of his career. Bradley Cooper seems to be escaping it.

My wife and I had the same reactions as you two did watching this. First... wtf.... Then...WTF?..... Finally WWTTFFF!? But I have to brag that I got a "Talented Mr. Ripley" vibe pretty early on. And I'm sorry but, "I used to be a lesbian... it was just too wet... Men are just nice and dry," just has to be the best one liner in the whole film.
I haven't seen this movie except for here and find it similar to The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) with Matt Damon. It also reminds me of Something For Everyone (1970) starring Angela Lansbury and Michael York, a black comedy. Michael connives his way into a service position at a castle of a countess and weedles his way thru the family (and a few deaths; did I say this was a comedy?) to positions of trust, power and prominence.
It wasn't within a year. The dad died like 15 years later lol
The Talented Mr Riley is closer to this plot than Parasite. It’s probably the better film, even…but I really like Saltburn as well. Fantastic performances.
Oliver was such a master manipulator that he even fooled the audience! such a well-written, directed, acted, and shot film. thanks for the reaction, guys!

For me I don’t think it needs to be so complicated. So rarely does the villain win, and for my money it was nice to see (even when, if it were real life, Oliver would scare the living shit out of me). The score was phenomenal, the camerawork was amazing, every shot could have been framed as far as I’m concerned. One of my favorite movies hands down.
You guys should definitely check out Promising Young Woman and Killing of the Sacred Deer. The latter is pretty wild, the former scarred me for life. 😊
You need to react to "A Promising Young Woman".
If the movie had ended about half an hour earlier it might have been an A+. It was very interesting, but then it kept revealing over and over that he was a psychopath trying to kill off the wealthy family, and then the flashback sequence really treated the audience like we were supposed to be surprised at that point even though it was pretty obvious what was happening by then.
This movie almost felt like a continuation of his character from The Killing of a Sacred Deer except they were american in that film. It's a slow movie but Barry Keoghan is great in it.
I haven't read through all the comments here, so maybe this has already been mentioned, but the director also played a younger Camilla Parker Bowles in The Crown. Barry Keoghan is a great actor & I've loved him ever since seeing The Killing Of A Sacred Deer. I find that whenever he is on screen in any movie I can only focus at him & hardly anything else. I don't even know why but think it's because he is such an unselfconscious actor that he completely draws people in to his performance. Although he has played a good few strange characters I feel convinced that he would be believable in any role because he is so gifted as an actor. What expressive eyes too...
She was great in The Crown. Curious if she'll give up acting to direct and produce only.

For some reason I thought you guys had reacted to "Promising Young Woman". I would be very curious to your reactions to that movie. I personally think it is brilliant. I also enjoyed "Saltburn", but for very different reasons and not as much as PYW.

This movie was disgusting and beautiful at the same time. So good. Seeing as you both enjoyed this, I highly recommend Promising Young Woman. It covers a difficult subject matter, but it is such a good watch. Carey Mulligan does a very good job on both her American accent and her performance.

Liked this one a lot. I think it was time for another glossy, posh thriller like The Talented Mr. Ripley (Also a good one if you guys haven't seen it). Have been wondering when a good director would come along and hit that trope again.

Wasn't sure how I felt about the film before, but I appreciate it a little more after hearing your guys' opinion. I was surprised by your guys' positive response though, for some reason I thought you wouldn't be very taken by it. Maybe the class themes are more relatable to english people?
an interesting thing people seem to forget, is that Oliver is a liar.
trying to make it seem as though his drive was always economic resentment, and that his motive was Saltburn from the beginning with his monologue at the end, but we know it’s not true.
the narrator of the story, is someone we know is a liar!

Emerald Fennel wasn’t just nominated, she won the best original screenplay Oscar for PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN. She’s an incredible writer.

I’ve seen some disgustingly gory horror films and I’d take them any day over seeing a man lick a plug hole lol. Still loved this film though, some incredible performances!
Not that I condone that behavior, but I bet that tub was cleaner than my floors lol. The staff for that place would make sure of it (the thought made me feel better about the scene btw)

I agree with some previous comments this film is very reminiscent of the talented Mr Ripley I'd say more so than parasite so you should definitely watch it having recently rewatced Ripley I think it is the better film but thats not saying I didn't enjoy Saltburn.
It reminds quite a bit of a classic British film starring Sir Alec Guinness, called Kind Hearts and Coronets.
You need to take the film on its own terms - it was meant to be a guilty pleasure - pushing the limits - gorgeous, seductive and very over the top. Meant to be fun. Was it not? Fun fact - both the grave scene and the scene where he jumps on top of her at the end - were improvised by Keogan.

Believe it or not, Barry Keoghan has a small romance in Eternals. I truly couldn’t believe it. But, he was very convincing as someone sincerely and wholesomely head over heels in love with another character. She absolutely melts him.

Well, the BAFTA’s gave this a lot of love unlike the Oscars. I found this film way more enjoyable than Parasite. Actually, I hate Parasite. It is not a film that the average person can sit there and completely enjoy and understand it. You have to be the type of person that watches subtext, hidden meanings, foreshadowing, dissecting each sentence or camera shot to get to the deeper meaning of what the director is actually saying. It just worked too hard. I agree with Shaun that they are similar, but this is a film you can enjoy. Yes, Saltburn has its own hidden meaning, like the wind up puppets. There is one puppet in the box for each member of the family and then puts their death rocks on top of it in order. There is definitely class warfare with the directing and cinematography. At the beginning and throughout film, Ollie is always smaller than everyone else. The shot when he’s blowing out the candles, he is sitting lowly in the chair while everyone around him are like pillars next to him, with his reflection in the table is small and spreads out into an incomprehensible mess, which is his brain. And every time he “commands” someone, his face is equal in height to that person. When he is telling Venetia that she is going to eat and then stay at the table. When he confronts Farliegh about telling on him and Venetia they are laying on the floor, head to head, making him admit his ulterior motives. (And Tom, Ollie didn’t give him a hand job when he spit into his hand…) so, yeah, all of that kind of stuff is there but it’s some things anyone can see and still enjoy the film.
The shock value was worth watching your reactions! The beautifully shot scene when Ollie was on top of the grave was the actors idea. They did it on a closed set and he just went to town, improving. And I am so sorry you cut out the last dance scene… one of my favorite “parts”! I agree with the 8.8 rating.
I love this film and saw it a couple of times at the cinema. A lot of people have made comparisons with The Talented Mr Ripley - rightly so - but it also reminded me of the Pier Paulo Pasolini film Theorem in which a young Terence Stamp (General Zod in Superman II) worms his way into the home of an Italian family and seduces them all.
I saw less of Parasite and more of The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Please watch promising young woman!! It’s brilliant! Clever casting for the men in the film as well, I believe they purposefully cast actors who are known for playing “the nice/funny guy” to help push the narrative of the film.

Barry’s been in more movies & TV series, including Chernobyl - that Tom has also posted quite good reactions to on this channel, just a month prior to this Saltburn reaction. Go check out his Chernobyl series reactions. I believe Barry is esp. in Episode 4. Astute comments by Tom about Barry’s performance at the end of that particular reaction. Barry is such a gem.
Based on your review of Casablanca, I think you would love David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia. Probably the best cinematography ever. A true classic.

i HIGHLY suggest you both watch promising young woman! it's an amazing film that should have gotten even more buzz than saltburn has, in my opinion.

This film reminds me very much of Patricia Highsmith's character Tom Ripley and "The Talented Mr. Ripley."

There were multiple years between Oliver taking the $$ and leaving, and him having tracked down Elspeth to try again. THere's not a lot of dialogue, but she does talk about growing up or whatever -- you woulnt say that in only a year, even.
The obituary for her husband indicated that he did of something other than Oliver taking action.. Dont want to say anymore.

english is not my first language so i think a lot went over my head. i thought oliver fell in love with the property, saltburn, itself because it seemed like he could've stopped at felix. nobody would know that he lied since only felix knew, but it seems like he went on to destroy the whole family just to get saltburn(?) i dunno..
this is why i like watching reactors and browsing the comments section-they make english movies make more sense.
Even more than Parasite, the connections to The Talented Mr. Ripley. Check that one out.
