- After lying dormant for half a century, the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma, in Spain's Canary Islands, suddenly exploded in a river of fire on September 19, 2021. The eruption lasted for 85 days: no one was killed, but more than 1,000 homes were destroyed, as well as 70 kilometres of roads. Some 350 hectares of banana plantations were covered with lava. The eruption dealt a huge blow to the island's economy. Almost a year and a half later, around 100 residents are still being housed in hotels and many continue to wait for the financial aid promised by the Spanish authorities. FRANCE 24's Céline Schmitt and Armelle Exposito report.

Since this vulcano is "silent" now I point my eyes to Italy and look at the phlegraean fields in naples with much worry. If this super vulcano errupts then whole euorpe goes dark. It's a scary thought. I live in the north of Germany so this super Vulcano REALLY scares me! And this thing WILL errupt. No matter what they say, this thing is long overdue. It's only a matter of time before it errupts. The signs are there.
I was more worried from watching a documentary if part of La Palma broke off in the ocean that it could cause a Tsunami, thank goodness it didn't happen, but if it was a strong earthquake part of La Palma could slide down into the Ocean and create a Mega Tsunami.
It's not a matter of if. It's when.
Scientists have been worried about the intersecting fault lines for more than 50 years.
eventually, the land will slide into the sea it's a question of when.
@@NA-ll7uy I agree with you it's a when it will slide.
I cant help but wonder if this island could turns it's fortunes around by opening a fertiliser factory that harvests the millions of tons of highly nutritious lava that's been dumped all over the town.
Isn’t it the ash that is fertile, but lava is nothing bat glass-like stone?
"Ricardo's family has lived off bananas for several generations"
An ancient vegan diet. Maybe they 'made' a living from bananas eh?!
I don’t feel sorry for people who knowingly chose to live in a hazardous area, then act surprised when a hazard actually happens. Kind of like people who build homes on the sea shore knowing full well one storm could wipe out everything.
What if planets are superior beings and we're parasites it rids itself of whenever it sees fit?
Stop smoking
@@bahastar6688 Drugs didn't do this, I'm this in spite of smoking, fool .
I bet the crack of the west flank slid about 5 more inches to the sea but no mega tsunami yet
Next time Don't live under a volcano in a socialist state.
Sorry, do you come from the United States of Dumpster Fire?
Spain isn't socialist.. what bs are you on about
Next time don´t post when you are on drugs.
@@katharinabauer4060 Hey you're giving a bad name to people who post while on drugs
And you stop eating bananas
