    This is absolutely INSANE! This makes me really itch to get out and go look for some. I just moved to SW Wisconsin and there's definitely some giants around here. I'm guessing that's where you're located too? I've actually never found a shed yet where I hunt in NE Wisconsin, hoping to change that soon.

      Hahaha we’ll have to meet up half way when I’m leaving WI to hunt Southern Ohio! We’re lucky to live in states that have big deer, and a lot of public land that’s for sure.

      @@jasonnester9514 haha there definitely are. Southern Ohio is pretty rugged and I know it can be tough to hunt but I suppose that’s one of the ingredients for producing giant deer.

    im from NY but taking a trip to WI, IA, IL to do a little shed hunting. I was just wondering if they started to drop where you are, and if you were south or north WI?

      Oh boy now I’m facilitating shed competition in my state lol. But I would say maybe 30% of the bucks are dropped, I just had 6 bucks with both sides run across the road in front of me yesterday. Usually by Valentine’s Day 90% are dropped.

    You mentioned you don't really look in timber? Mostly fields and marshes?

    • @tonyvanasten
      @tonyvanasten  Год назад

      Well at the time that was kind of specific to the area I was shed hunting. The deer around there don’t spend much time in the timber during the winter, especially with deeper snow. The few oaks that did drop acorns are gone, and there’s not much reason for them to be in there. Most of sheds I’d find in the marshy country would be in the sunny thick bedding cover and I find many in night bedding spots adjacent to food sources. Now out in the hills where I’m at now I find most in the timber on south faces and bedding points ect… so it’s all dependent on where you’re at and what the deer are doing in that late winter timeframe.

      Thanks a lot! It varies from year to year. I think it was 4 years ago I was over 1,500 miles. Two years ago I bet I only put on 300 maybe. This year I kept track almost every time and I was a little over 600.

      I rarely will find a shed either unless I’m actually out looking for sheds, that might sound weird but I can’t go out scouting and find sheds. From what I’ve noticed it only seems like maybe 30% of the bucks have dropped in the areas I’m paying attention to.

    How do u beat all the other shed hunters

    • @tonyvanasten
      @tonyvanasten  Год назад +7

      I get beat to a lot of places, there’s been a lot of big bucks that I’ve looked for forever and couldn’t find their sheds. Cameras help a lot to know when and where to look. But there are a lot of sheds people walk right by. The day I found that 190” dead buck there were two sets of boot tracks about 25 yards away. Also the marsh is very hard to search and totally cover if it’s not froze up so the window between the snow melting and being able to walk in the marsh is short. Probably why I find a lot of old antlers every year

      Thanks! Ya that’s one thing you’ll find a lot more of on public land is dead heads, a lot more deer getting wounded and unrecovered. I’m not really sure how many sheds I’ve found, maybe after this year I’ll have to pull them all out and see how many I have.
