Good morning Wes. Those are neat little engines. I started out farming with my dad's 70 diesel. They take a lot care and proper operating procedure. My third tractor purchase around 1993 was a 730 diesel electric start. Since I live in Michigan I ended up finding out that yes indeed I was able to get a factory option block heater for it. Whether or not you can get one now, I can't say. But it worked great and after an hour of being plugged in it would start easy. I tried to not tax the batteries on it or my 4020 with the 24 volt system. I also put a little Lucas in the oil of my pony engine on my 70 because after it has shut down it's in a continuous vibration due to the diesel engine running I believe causes wear too.
I like shot of air in the intake when cranking small engines just to help the buggers along that have starting issues. It helps with over fueling, and wet plugs. Thanks for the shows Wes.
My uncle had a 720 diesel with a pony motor at one time. He liked the tractor but hated the pony motor as he had nothing but problems with it. The 720 was well used when he got it back in the 80s though. He had farmed with 2 cylinders mostly but needed a bigger tractor so he traded it in on a 4010 and didn't look back!
I’m glad to see im the not the only one drying the bores out with a blowtorch. I had an old snowmobile that was very easy to flood, it commonly got the blowtorch treatment.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. To answer your question from the stream earlier today. I first started watching for the mechanical, then the farming, followed by the nonsense that’s no longer permitted, then your family, and travels. That sums up most of the reasons to watch your content except the most recent. Sanity in politics.
My brother bought a 70 diesel I believe it was a 55 he had a lot of fun with it when it ran he was always having trouble with the coil packs he finally got to the point that when he got tired of fixing the pony motor we just pulled started when we wanted to use it.
Hey, Tricky Mag trouble . I see arcing points . change the MAG condensers . Check voltage at coils . Bad ground ? It could need a rebuild. Compression Check ? Pony sounds kinda sick.
Wes if you leave the switch on the panel on without the pony motor running it will burn your points. Been there done that as a younger man on a farm here in SW Ohio. We always had to pull start the 720 because someone thought the switch had to be on to run the tractor. It doesn't when it did work right we would just turn it off without running the pony out of gas before it was shut off.
I have a buddy that bought an 820 for the price of the tires on it. The ole boy that had it, had just put new rubber on when the Pony motor decided to abruptly scatter it'self. The shocking part, was the machine work and parts to rebuild that little V-4 cost more than the same for the Main.
. Points and coil and condenser on an 820,.JD The 820 had battery ignition. NO magneto. The 820 jd tractor pony had 2 j8s and 2 CJ8's (Champion plugs). the cj8 plugs were shortened down version of a tall j8. Plugs were on a damned ugly spot. Torch heating and burning off the flooded cylinder gas was the norm around here. Interestingly enough, JD used a slow running 2 cylinder and a SCREAMING 6000 rpm,4-cylinder pony motor on the same tractor!
From what I could see you may have a weak condenser because the points looked a little lively regards Alan from the UK. The condenser if faulty will cause arching across the points and cause bad starting and miss fires.
I saw that spark at the points as well…….. I was wondering if it would run again if the cover was off the mag. Maybe that spark was grounding out to the cover?
That's not a magneto. It's battery ignition. A lot of times people will leave the ignition switch on with the motor shut off and that will burn up the coils
I have a 720 diesel with the same pony and my pony is puking oil out of the exhaust. I can't seem to find a rebuild kit anywhere for those and I'm sad.
Classic tractor 🚜 pull off the farmall m Deere John sixty and big John seven twenty the old M with the m with the m and w pistions in it nice seven twenty
Your videos are like a window into your world, love the view!

In my 35 years in IT systems, we used to have pony systems to run very large compute systems. Same idea, just with computers.

Come on Wes, get that Johnny Popper running!
I'm begining to understand equipment now lol... Thanks . I'm learning...

If I have sparklers handy I'd light one and stick it in the Cylinder.
Soak the plug in Brake cleen then hit it with the Torch
Thanks Much Wes...
Like them old tractors
Lots of birds I'm hearing lol

It sounds like the Magnito cap is crack and grounding the points it sounds like to me
I was gonna say this. What did you change lol.

I really wish you would make sure we have a good view. It’s been a problem since you got this new camera. Thanks

Green Magazine has an interesting article online about keeping the ponies alive.
Did you buy this from Ryan Lind? They are a 2 cylinder parts dealer in Indiana. I had a 730 pony start. I miss it. Ill have another someday
yes I did. he was getting a bunch of them that where built in Argentina brought in. they built them there until sometime in the 70's
I had a neighbor who was going to sell me his 820. That had electric start and power steering if i remember right . He dicieded to keep it
Here in Iowa last week a 730 diesel with WF sold for $17900. no that not a misprint.

Did you turn the fuel back on
Yes yes yes ive been waiti g for an old iron vidoes ❤😂😂

On pony motor coils are very sensitive to voltage. Most times when you try to jump start with a battery charger or 12 volts you cook them.
Also work the igition back and forth pretty vigorously, sometimes the contact points get corrosion and don't make good contact.
My dad had a 720 and sold it off before I was able to really mechanic on something. Which I had the money to go buy one just for the sentinel value!
Something else, I don't know anything about this tractor. But if it has been switched over to 12 volts it has to have a resistor before the points
That camera seems to have a mind of it's own, a mind that doesn't want to see what's happening.
We had a 720 coils went bad ones from snowmobile work in there
Wes is there suppose to be sparks coming from the upper right?
Maybe something is grounding your ignition like points cover?
Great video!! FJB and FKH!
Good video.
Things can be frustrating sometimes, but I bet you'll learn something from it.
Thanks Wes, this is just a bump in the road. It'll be fine.
👍😊
Wes, Did I miss the follow-up video to "Combine won't start"?
@@volvojohn9036 no you didn’t watch it to the end I said it started
Well there you go
👍🏻🍻
Fun times, working to get an old pony motor started. 🥴

@@benharleman587 I think the Guy I bought this one from has the rebuilt kits for them.
@@onelonleyfarmer I'll do a better research later. Thank you!
You can still get a new WICO B-4 distributor. For $415.00.
My pony motor on my 730 was hard starting. I put a electric pump on it and it starts right away
Do you still own those farmalls and the other 2 cylinder jd?
yes we do
👍👍
This camera is never pointed to the spot it needs to be..
thanks for that
pony on a 730 we have we have to make sure little gas tank is full to the brim of gas otherwise it wont start.
the spark didnt look consistent enough on the magneto
Try starting without the magneto cap again
why would you buy that ? and then drive cross country to pick it up ?
same reason you typed your comment! I wanted to!
Going to make idiot bricks again
charge the 6volt battery up and off to the races.

Probably Ryan lynnd I believe I spelled his last name wrkng
If there was a forced choice between a modern gasoline and battery (electric vehicle) tractor, I would probably take the gasoline tractor.
Cover could be shorting put the points
🙂🦌🚜
Wondering Jew haha Whirling dervish
Hey buddy, can't see what your doing.
try pointing the camera so we can see what yawl doing
Early Squad 🙂
Take cap off it don’t like the cap?? Lol
It does not run right, my money is on the condensor
