I ran the entire pandemic from March 2020-Augest 2021, 5 miles 3x week, Monday/Wednesday/Friday and it helped my cardio tremendously. I also did push ups, chin ups, pull ups etc. I don't run anymore I just do a shit ton of rolling lol. I still enjoy running 5 miles every now and then but not so often.
Sprinting is amazing for combat sports. I do a lot of sprints and then there will be times where I run 3+ miles and it is effortless. I also roll 3-4x a week and at 41 I'll out cardio a lot of the young guys.
Great discussion! I've run 2 marathons in the past 12 months and I've got another one lined up for September. I'm also due to start jiu-jitsu next week - just one session a week. I've wanted to roll for a long time and things keep coming up (like marathons lol). I'm not getting any younger, I just turned 40 so the plan is to run twice a week (lasted me in good stead for the first 2 marathons), roll once, with 1 full body strength day. So that's 4 days a week, 1 day of zone 2 aerobic work and 2 days off. Have no idea if it will work but let's see how it goes. "Your body will adapt to whatever house you build for it". I didn't consider myself a "runner" till I cracked 10 miles. Great points about running form too. Although I ran those first 10 miles it was ugly and it was only with the eyes of a running coach, I improved my form with some tweaks to make myself more efficient over 26 miles. For any people wanting to improve running form, I found the book 'The Lost Art of Running' by Shane Benzie an invaluable resource (same guy who helped me improve my running form).
Awesome advice, I’m 48 and I’ve recently been trying to keep up 3 weight sessions, 3 bjj sessions, 2 spin classes plus yoga and stretching, been wondering why I’m so sore and tired and why I find rolling so hard 😂😂😂
I am a thicker guy (225-6ft) and only run 1-2x a week on trails and hills (roughly 5 miles). BJJ 2x a week. Weights 1-2X per week. When rolling live, I feel like my cardio is far superior to a lot of the other guys my size and I feel like this is due to my running. Yes my body feels shot, but BJJ also ruins my body depending on the day. So it is difficult to really tell which activity is really to blame for my body's issues. Similar to diet, it is a balance to each individual right? The mental clarity I get from running is similar to meditation and so therapeutic for me, but I also am sure it is not helping my body feel good haha. I def stiff and shot after I run, but I also feel like nothing can replace it. Is there really a perfect answer? Other than juicing up :) ?
As animals who can sweat we out ran our prey to the point of them collapsing in heat exhaustion as hunter gatherers. There is a 100 mile ultra in the us that started as a horse race until a human man won it. We are made to run but it's much easier if you have a light frame ....few hunter gatherers were particularly large!
In what landscape could humans, with crap smell, etc out run prey, I’m assuming like a deer or gazelle??? Beagles hunt hares in a similar manner that you suggest. But they follow the scent trail. How could humans follow their prey? Just wondering I know the argument, just not sure it’s valid. There could be other reasons that we can run “long distances”.
Considering you can find documentaries on tribes in africa who do just that, it's safe to say it's legit. They generally use tracking skills- following animal trails, and have an intuition for the animals' psyche.

Kudos! Running is great, and the results are undeniable. It's the body count for those who do it poorly that we're concerned about.

Burpees also help my run time.

I love running, specifically on trails. So fun.
Running is good cos you can out run your attacker if the dudes knows juijitsu hahaha
