- PENTEWAN CORNWALL | Full tour of holiday seaside village Pentewan near St Austell, Cornwall.
Pentewan in Cornwall boasts a dual identity: a charming coastal holiday village and a former port steeped in history. Here's a breakdown of its unique character:
Pentewan nestles on the south coast of Cornwall, about 3 miles south of St Austell, at the mouth of the St Austell River. The village itself is a visual treat, with many older buildings constructed from the local Pentewan stone, lending a sense of timeworn charm.
Pentewan's story stretches back centuries. Its name, derived from the Cornish language, translates to "foot of the radiant stream," hinting at its connection to the nearby river. The village's past is intertwined with various industries:
Pentewan's beginnings involved a mix of activities - fishing, stone quarrying, tin streaming, and agriculture. A pivotal shift occurred when Sir Christopher Hawkins, a local landowner, redeveloped the harbor in the early 1800s. This era witnessed Pentewan's rise as a major china clay port, a vital industry in Cornwall. At its peak, the port shipped a third of Cornwall's china clay. The last trading ship left Pentewan in 1940, marking the end of an era.
Today, Pentewan has transitioned into a popular tourist destination. Visitors are drawn to the beauty of the surrounding area, which is part of the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Here are some of Pentewan's present-day highlights:
Pentewan Sands: A sparkling stretch of near-white sand, this beach is a haven for families and water sports enthusiasts.
Pentewan Valley Trail: This scenic trail follows the route of the old Pentewan railway, offering a chance to explore the area by foot or bike.
The Old Harbour: A reminder of Pentewan's industrial past, the old harbor, though no longer operational, adds a touch of historical charm to the village.
Pentewan caters to a variety of interests. Whether you seek relaxation on the beach on your holiday, exploration along the trails, or a glimpse into the village's intriguing past, Pentewan offers a delightful Cornish experience.

next part of Cornwall Thank You.🇬🇧😎🇬🇧
Enjoyed the walk scenery and the beach and harbor. It looks a very nice quiet holiday village
It really is!
Nice Walk 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Thank you 👍
50 years ago, which makes me 9 years old at the time, I was on holiday there with my family. We stayed in the accommodation above the Piskey Cove and walked through to the beach most days. I can’t remember ever going into The Ship Inn, which surprises me. My father’s preference was to go into Mevagissey, which is nearby. We stayed on the Pentewan Sands Holiday Park in a caravan another year too. Thanks for this nostalgia boost Neil.
My favourite place for 2yrs when I worked at Boswinger. The Ship Inn was ...and probably still is .... the best place to be. Miss it. Great video taking me back. 👍
This looks like a very lovely little village to stay and visit. I imagine when the holiday park gets going, it may feel overrun. I'll give this one a miss as it's not dog friendly for much of the year. Thankfully Cornwall is not short of dog friendly beaches.
True!
Never heard of this place but it is very pretty. Thank you for showing us somewhere we've never been in Cornwall 👍
My pleasure 😊 There's some really great places coming up on the channel in this Cornwall series - some incredible scenery!
Stayed here in 2012 in the holiday park .. Great times .. wad the year of London Olympics but I was unemployed at the time .. visited Lost Gardens of Heligan (which were amazing) ... I love Cornwall
Did you have a pint in the Ship? Lovely village and I have stayed at Pentewen Sands holiday park a few times and love the beach there 😊
The pretty flowers are called Herb Robert, they are a member of the Geranium family. If you crush the leaves they give off a strong, unpleasant to some, smell.
👍💙💙💙💙🌷
Love your sence of humor in your video notes!
Thank you! Life should be happy ❤️🤣

There's a couple of places like this in the new Cornwall series - some great places to see that you and. may not have heard of before - exciting stuff!
For some reason this place gives me the creeps. It reminds me of 'The Village of the Damned' (without the sea).
