  • The 3.0L V6 TDI is a beast. It starts and runs very smoothly at -10°F/-23°C with no drama. The cars were sitting outside all night, neither is equipped with a block heater (not needed). This is really one of the most refined diesels out there, no compromise.
    It's amazing how nice modern common rail diesels are, this is the best I've driven!

      All the secret is in:
      - glowplugs are on not after putting key in, but just after switching car on by remote, so you get few more seconds. Similar to cycling glowplugs on older cars
      - batteries are in great condition - this is always must-have prerequisity for cold starts
      - V6 is easier to start than V4
      Now the sad part - My 2001 Hyundai 2.0 CRDI started great as well without aditives, at similar temperatures (-20 .. -25 deg. C) when it was 6 years old, 200.000 km. So this Korean was perfectly engineered as well 15 years ago.

    Why is diesel so unpopular in the USA, why so suprized when they start in the cold

    • @PingHorror
      @PingHorror 7 лет назад +27

      It's not to say that Diesel is unpopular here in the states, anybody who really knows vehicles understands the efficiency a diesel engine offers over a gasoline engine. The issue is that around the entire world Diesel is always cheaper than Gasoline, but here in the states the Trucking industry is so massive that the only efficient means the federal and state governments have to tax the industry is by taxing Diesel fuel. Which in previous years has meant a .50 cent to $1.00 difference in the cost of Regular gasoline to Highway Low-Sulfur Diesel. More recently the price gap is closing so more people are buying diesel. I'm sure if you look into it you will notice that the American manufacturers all throughout the 50s,60s,70s and 80s ran advertisement campaigns designed to make Americans view diesel as a nasty, crude, dangerous substance that should only be handled by trained professionals(ala truckers). Just as they ran campaigns to convince Americans that they need an automatic over a manual because their wife cannot drive a manual but the automatic is female friendly.

    Hey man, as someone contemplating q5 tdi, thanks for addressing one of my concerns. Another concern I have is I have heard some drivers speak of a bit of an engine lag at times when trying to say, punch through a hole in traffic. Have you experienced this? If so, can you avoid it by manually downshifting before hitting the throttle?

    • @ChrisOstberg
      @ChrisOstberg  10 лет назад

      Nick Correia No worries man, it's pretty responsive. Yes, if you put it in S mode or manual mode you'll be fine. However with 428 lb-ft/580 Nm of torque you can accelerate fantastically in traffic without downshifting.

    An electric heater is built-in. There's no way to control it or use for pre-heating, but it helps to keep the cooling fluid hot.
    Any cold start requires the proper diesel fuel. In fact, it's the worst part of the diesel story. Unlike the petrol it may freeze at 0C. If you drive diesel just occasionally - always keep a reserve with the winter specs.

    • @LOVETOYOTAS
      @LOVETOYOTAS 7 лет назад

      From what I understand Europe has much higher quality diesel than the USA, Australia and many other countries outside of Europe. It has way less sulphur in it and I think this results in less soot and other harmful products coming out of the tail pipe. This is why it is called "clean diesel." They also have DPF filters and other filters in the exhaust pipes of modern diesels in Europe as well which catch up to 95% of soot and other harmful products produced by the engine so it does not even enter the air. So in Europe they have low sulphur diesel and DPF filters and also other filters which means what comes out of the tail pipe is cleaner than in other countries and less polluting.

      Well, I don't go to cubs and you don't fill a car like that with more than 4 people at a time. Otherwise, you might as well just buy a 2000 Honda Oddysey or Toyota Sienna.

    What do you think is better.. The Q5 or hhr Q7?

    • @ChrisOstberg
      @ChrisOstberg  9 лет назад +1

      theawesomeboy - I like the drive of the Q5 more. It's much quicker and lighter. Obviously the Q7 is bigger so if you need the room or the 3rd row it's great, but if the Q5 is big enough it's more fun to drive and more efficient.

    You say this is a cold start and that it's -10 but the car windows are not even frozen? Did the cars stand inside?

    • @ChrisOstberg
      @ChrisOstberg  7 лет назад

      Nick De Groot - there is light frost on the windows, the cars were outside as they were parked.

      Chris O okay thanks for the info. But I live in The Netherlands and even if it's just freezing 1 degrees (30 degrees Fahrenheit) your car will be totally covered in a layer of ice.

    • @wopmf4345FxFDxdGaa20
      @wopmf4345FxFDxdGaa20 7 лет назад

      +Nick De Groot I suppose there is more water vapor in warm air, and less in cold air, so the colder the air is, the more dry it is too.
      So if your car is covered with ice, the water must come from somewhere. Probably the humidity was high, and when the temperature came down, the water vapor was condensed back to water, on your car. Then that moisture freezes and as a result you have frozen car. :)
      But if there has been cold for long time, or if the temperature of air is rising. Then there will be no more water vapor condensing on your car.

      wopmf4345FxFDxdGaa20 okay thankyou for your reaction. I live near the coast maybe that is also one of the reasons. And the climate is offcourse different in The Netherlands

    I'm not a big fan of the chimes and they now put those on the EU models as well. It's the same thing on our 2015 Q5 as well: even if you have the car in park and it is not going anywhere then a whole hell breaks loose should you dare to open the driver's door while the engine is running...

      We changed gearbox, turbo, the head of engine (don't know is this correct), camshaft, and a lot of other small parts, PS. my dad is taxi driver and he gived me this car 2 years ago, that's why it is 650k km :D

    • @Elaba_
      @Elaba_ 7 лет назад

      Nowadays cars don't rust much anymore. So if the chassis isn't harmed, the car can keep on driving for ages if you are willing to replace parts on a continuous base. It must be a good car. Otherwise you dad wouldn't have kept it so long, especially when he used it to earn money.

      VW Group companies recommend that you drive the car immediately after starting, except in extremely cold weather. Then they recommend 30 seconds idling maximum.

      drivers here in northern algeria usually idle their engines for about 5 minutes before driving off, and the meditterenean climate is way warmer thn the one in the vid...i don't undersatand a thing here...

      @ChrisOstberg  9 лет назад

      Rouji Rouji - In the owner's manual for my car it says there is no need to let the car warm up, they recommend you drive immediately but not use high load/high RPM until the engine is warm.

  • @alexeybazhukhin1786

    -23 is pretty usual temperature for middle of Russia. But mostly VAGs diesels sucks at about -30, -35, not very common but quite frequent. But except You have special "Arctic" fuel, then yes, maybe there would`t be any problems. Gasoline engines faster, smoother and in fact more reliable running low temperatures + much more cheaper to maintain and to repair (if problems) So it is not bad but it is not good. Just for fans =) Diesel is more about religion than about pragmatic or enjoy.
