    In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy explains how to tune up your hammers to improve their performance.
    Many viewers have written to the OJA to ask why their forging projects don't look as good as the examples shown in our videos. The answer is that they were working with hammers that had not been refined and polished. Manufacturers do not sell hammers that are tuned up and ready to work with. You need to break edges, round corners and polish your hammers to achieve beautiful results. It may take some elbow grease to refine a hammer. But, it's totally worth the time and trouble. Working with a hammer that has been refined will produce smooth polished hammer marks and move metal rather than pinch or shear it.
    Once you've finished tuning up your hammers you might want to watch our very brief video on hammer covers • Protect Mirror Finishe...

    Dear Mr. Ahr,
    I really enjoy all of your videos and have learned a lot listening to you .
    And you always bring us a touch of humor plus common sense to help solve our jewelry problems!
    This one on polishing HAMMERS not only make sense
    but I have also applied the same principle to my new PLIERS! Once polished , less chance for them to mark our precious metal!!!
    Thanks, GB

    I've been inspired by a friend's work but had no idea what goes into prep for a good result. As a painter was always impressed by the jewellery department shows, their presentation was immaculate, something that goes from start to finish. Impressed by your ability to communicate all this. Thanks

      Thank you for your comment. I appreciate the feedback. I often find that many people don't realize how much work and time go into making quality metal pieces. I'm glad that you think that I have communicated this concept in an acceptable way.
      Thank you for your support! : )

    This is great. It explains why all the cross peens I have seen have the straight edge unlike the Fretz hammers. Are they stainless? My hubby told me that my chasing hammer was chrome plated. I love how you lighten things up with a little bit of clowning.

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Kim, I'm glad that you like the videos. And, I'm glad that you appreciate our silly sense of humor. Hammers are not made from stainless steel. They are made from tool steel. I wouldn't be surprised if you have a chrome plated hammer. Often hammers and burnishers are chromed to appear as though they have been finished and polished by the manufacturer. You should sand through the chrome to avoid having it crack off and jump into your eyes. Wear eye protection for sure.

    Very good video as always. It make me think about going to the shop and buy a common hammer and transform it. Thanks for the tips!...and keep away from the booz, too much of it can get you to hammer your finger...lol

    Do you have to polish the hammer? I haven't yet bought and polishing tools.

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  6 лет назад +1

      Your work will require less polishing if you hit it with a polished hammer. So, you don't have to polish your hammers. But, you'd be wise to spend the time putting a polish on your hammers.

    what would be the proper shape of the hammer? should it be perfectly rounded like the edge of a coin? or should it be slightly flattened in the center of the hammer head? thanks for your answer

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  7 лет назад +1

      The whole surface of the hammer's face should be slightly curved.

    Is there where to buy a less expensive jewelry bench?

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy
      @OnlineJewelryAcademy  6 лет назад

      You might find a less expensive jewelry bench for sale online. Sometimes just typing the word "sale" into your search will bring up discounted items. Otherwise, you might have to take a woodworking class to get a deal on a bench. The OJA doesn't promote any vendors or product manufacturers for free. Good luck with your search.
