  • 0800063 - Operation Fishbowl - High-Altitude Weapons Effects - 1962 - 28:10 - Black&White - Operation Fishbowl, the Department of Defenses high altitude testing portion of Operation Dominic I, was conducted in the Johnston Island area of the Pacific testing area in 1962. These five weapons-effects tests, launched by Strypi, Thor, and Nike Hercules rockets, were as follows:
STARFISH PRIME, July 9, 400-kilometer altitude, 1.4 megaton
CHECKMATE, October 20, tens of kilometers altitude, low (less than 20 kt)
BLUEGILL 3 PRIME, October 26, tens of kilometers altitude, submegaton (less than 1 Mt, but more than 200 kt)
KINGFISH, November 1, tens of kilometers altitude; submegaton (less than 1 Mt, but more than 200 kt)
TIGHTROPE, November 4, tens of kilometers altitude, low (less than 20 kt)
Two goals of these tests were to determine if radiation and blast and heat effects of high- altitude detonations were capable of neutralizing an enemy reentry vehicle and capable of determining the blackout effects on radar and communications of various yields and altitudes of bursts.

Checkmate was detonated on my birthday. I was happy to find awhile back, a documented test that had been done. But over the years, I became more unsure about my birthday bomb being the only one with the name that just didn't bother to go with the theme.

About 4:55 they mention the radiation measurement stations. In 1962 I lived 5 miles from Moffett Field in Palo Alto where we did Submarine Communications and based our Pacific Coast "Sub-Hunters". During the Cuban Missile Crisis I lived in Palo Alto which is in the heart of what is now called Silicon Valley. From San Francisco to South San Jose (Santa Clara County) we would have been hit by 25-30 Soviet Nuclear weapons at the height of the Cold War. No need for "Civil Defense" or a basement bomb shelter back then if you lived in Silicon Valley. We would have been vaporized in the opening hour. "And the Living will Envy the Dead"...

The moon and the sun are local bodies it seems. The ancient texts talks about the portals that the moon and Sun come through are 12 different openings for different phases. I don't think the moon and Sun are that far away.

Nowadays there are non-nuclear EMP bombs which makes them much much more dangerous because of they don't have the side effects of nuclear detonation, which makes the person (or persons) who has this technology wants to use them in the event of war.

@Ghostwolfalpha Non nuclear EMP bombs are no way near as dangerous as nuclear bombs. Nuclear bombs have the potential to destroy all humanity non nuclear EMP bombs have the potential to cause localise and repairable damage to electrical components in a very small area.
Also an attacking forces options for taking out infrastructure are either explosive or EMP I know which one I would rather be on the receiving end of.

The main reason behind both US and USSR high altitude tests was to determine if an injection of Beta particles (free electrons) into the earth's magnetic lines of force would cause a disruption of ballistic missile guidance systems in flight and to early warning radars on the ground. The magnetic lines of force radiate out from a point on the earth and curve around and intersect the earth again in the opposite hemisphere (conjugate points). In order to accept this theory, one must accept that the earth is a sphere. IF you believe the earth is flat, this explanation will not satisfy you. Detonating a nuke at one point produces a large EMP at the other point and can cause extensive damage to electronic equipment. The practice was deemed to indiscriminate to be used as a defense mechanism. It caused as much or more damage to 'friendly' installations and satellites as it did to the 'enemy' so it was abandoned. The limited test ban treat also put an end to tests in the atmosphere, under water and in space.
