Blade Runner is one of the most visually influential movies ever. It put the cyberpunk aesthetic into the mainstream and inspired generations of artists worldwide
To answer the question as to why Roy saved Deckard in the end, it’s because he had been programmed as a soldier Replicant. His entire existence was to be a killer, nothing more. Him saving Deckard in the end was Roy’s last act of defiance to his programming, his creator, and to the world. That he had transcend his prewritten existence and became more human than most humans. And in perhaps the end, finding his own personal salvation.
Tears in Rain, 1 of the best speeches ever spoken, was written by David Peoples but changed by Rutger Hauer the day before…his character became a better human than was some humans in the masterpiece 🎉
What's wild is....The character "Batty" played by Rutger Hauer was portrayed in this film dying on the roof in 2019. The actor Rutger Hauer died in real life, 37 years later....in 2019....
Roy's final speech is all adlibbed!😮 Every time I watch this movie, I'm stunned by some of the scenes beauty, particularly inside shots. Same goes for the new Bladerunner movie!
20:10 In 2007, 25 years after the theatrical release of Blade Runner, Joanna Cassidy who plays Zhora did a series of reshoots for Blade Runner The Final Cut. Joanna Cassidy wore the original costume which she had kept after the original film was completed. The costume still fit her perfectly after 25 years.
This movie bombed at the box office in 1982 but went on to be considered by many as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time and influenced countless filmmakers. The unsung hero in this film? The timeless soundtrack by Vangelis which I still consider the greatest film score ever…
At the end Roy is developing his own feelings. The trouble is is that he’s only 4 years old and doesn’t know how to process what he’s feeling or control it. He was in love with Pris but didn’t know what that meant. When she was killed he felt sorrow and anger but was confused and the howl is a mixture of crying in sorrow or roaring with anger.

okay, the cop who picked Harrison Ford up at the beginning... that was James Edward Olmos. You might know him from "Battlestar Galactica" (the reboot). I know him from "Miami Vice". "Pris" was played by Darryl Hannah; very much a woman. You may have seen her in "Splash" with Tom Hanks, "Roxanne" with Steve Martin, or "Kill Bill" with Uma Thurman. Thanks for watching the original version. Most people watch the later Director's Cut. There are many reasons to watch the later 'Ultimate' version, but I think seeing the original, with its slightly different flow and noir like voiceover lets you appreciate the later version more. BTW - The reason J.F. Sebastian's building may look so familiar is because it's an iconic L.A. location - The Bradbury Building and has been used in many films, ads & music videos.
There are four versions, Director’s cut, Final Cut, and American and European theatrical release ( the European version has more gore ). I have the four version box set. The theatrical versions have Deckard narration, the other two don’t.
I have a whole sleeve tattoo dedicated to the themes, atmosphere, & tones of this movie. It was so refreshing to rewatch it through your fresh eyes! Great reaction! Thank you so much!
32:22 "And this place looks like one of the, uh, Justin Timberlake's, um, music videos. So much. [...] Say Something." That's the Bradbury Building in Los Angeles -- and, yes, the Say Something video was also filmed there. 👍
1) Is Dekker a replicant? The film suggests this, but never gives a direct answer (in this film). 2) Blade Runner 2049 IS a direct sequel to this film, and I feel is very much worth watching. 3) Priss (the replicant who contacted Sebastian and painted her own face) wasn't the assassin. She was the 'pleasure model' in the police files. The assassin was Zora, the snake lady. 4) Replicants aren't stealing memories. The memories of Tyrel's niece that Rachel had were put in her mind while she was being made. 5) The only known replicants in the film are: Roy (leader, special forces soldier), Priss (sex worker), Leon (heavy labor, hazardous environments), Zora (infiltration, assassin), and Rachel ('more human than human' experimental model). Ideas of who else might be a replicant are speculation.
The film in no way implies that Deckard is a replicant. On the contrary, it shows very clearly that Deckard as a human is completely physically inferior to the replicants. He is beaten up by replicants throughout the film and his only chance to win a fight is his gun. It would also make no sense at all to the basic philosophical question of what it means to be human that the story is based on.
I remenber seeing this for the first time at about nine or ten years old. I was instantly spellbound! This is everything worthwhile about science fiction rolled into a great phat spliff! What does it mean to be human? Who are we? Do our memories define us? What does it mean to love or be loved?
He lost his gun when he was climbing. He doesn't have his gun when Roy Batty is chasing after him. \ And the reason why Deckerd was running was because Replicants are a lot stronger than humans.
You might want to check out Ridley Scott's final cut. There are more little details and a slightly different ending, but in all it is a more beautiful movie.
Pris is played by Daryl Hannah, who also starred in SPLASH, with Tom Hanks and John Candy. SPLASH is an excellent fantasy-comedy, which features Hannah as a real life mermaid. Highly recommended!
Roy's last monolog was all ad-libbed by the actor. He was a phenomenal and talented actor. I highly recommend watching Ladyhawke which has Michelle Pfeiffer as his love interest, and he is a hero in it, it's a really interesting movie and I highly recommend reviewing it on the channe, not many people have ever done a reaction to it
Nice job reacting to Blade Runner, Lia & Viki!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Made 40 years ago, it was definitely ahead of its time. The sets are very believable for a futuristic society. The funny thing is it is supposed to be the dystopian Los Angeles future of 2019.
Daryl Hannah, the actress portraying the replicant with the horizontal bar of black makeup, is also in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. (At first I thought you'd already seen that, but based on your video archives it looks like Ellie may be the only one.)
The original script had her dying after four years, but that ending did not test well with audiences so the end was changed so that she would have a longer life. (or maybe they left it ambiguous, I can't remember)
In the Director's Cut, it's ambiguous: Deckard picks up the origami unicorn, realises that that means Gaf knows what _his_ dreams are, which means Deckard's a replicant, then gets in the elevator with Rachel. The doors close, and that's it: credits. Too ambiguous for the studio, which is why they added the happy ending and the Sam Spade voice-over narration.
You watched the theatrical release. A lot of people (including me) like the director's cut better because there's no narration; however, the narration does help the audience understand more for first time viewing.
Sean Young, who plays Rachel, was in another excellent 1980s movie called No Way Out, starring Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman. It's an against-the-clock political/spy thriller with more twists and levels than a game of snakes and ladders... highly recommended.
Just btw, he couldn't just shoot Roy anymore because when he was climbing inside, he dropped his gun. So, his only option was to run as replicates are much stronger than regular humans! Anyhow, great reaction, love this movie!
The most advanced part of this movie is when Deckerd is analyzing the picture with the computer, and the computer is looking around doors and corners, inside the picture!
Nice reaction, but you know now the replicants had a built-in expiration date, right? That's why the guy at the end said Rachel will die, but not from being killed by anyone. That's why the replicants came back to earth, to try to get Tyrell to make them last longer. P.S. YT the Danish National Orchestra playing the Blade Runner Suite. It's fantastic!
At the end, he had no gun. He dropped it while climbing., that's why he was trying to get away from him. Sean Young, the actress in this was so beautiful in this movie. She only had a short career as she was ostracized by those who were controlled by Harvey Weinsten and those in his circle of friends, he was a major Hollywood Film Producer who was found guilty in 2020 of raping multiple women over the years. It was often said, that to make it Hollywood, you had to know Harvey to get ahead or watch your career just fade away or never happen at all. She voiced her concerns about the industry and the men in it but was always said to have mental problems by people in Hollywood, so no one would hire her on big productions, nor did they listen to her complaints.
Of course, as with Alien, an advanced cutting edge movie by Ridley Scott. All the Scott brothers movies are excellent! Maybe the greatest sci-fi movie ever. So advanced, sor far ahead of it's time, in sets, music, special effects. Also Bladerunner 2049 is just as good. Vangelis did the music for this movie, God rest his soul. Hans Zimmer took over from him, and did the music for Arrival and Interstellar.
Most people consider "Blade Runner" (1982) to be the second-best Science Fiction movie of all time. The greatest is "2001: A Space Odyssey", which most film critics also consider one of the greatest movies of any type. It changed Cinema forever, back in 1968, and still holds up as a strong vision of the future, even after 55 years.
Do you two remember the actress who plays Rachael? She was the villain in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. You saw Roy in Batman Begins, and Leon in The Fifth Element.
First time in my 180 years on this planet that someone couldn't figure out if Daryl Hannah is a woman or not. So weird. Funny. :) As others I am sure have said, this is the Theatrical release, which by many is not considered the best version. For me any version which doesn't have the BS dream is a fine version no matter what. My favorite movie of all time (all versions) and my favorite OST of all time. I go to bed every night with it playing.
Such a cool movie. It's hilarious you thought Pris actress (Daryl Hannah) was a man. 😂 Pris is a creepy character. She's nuts The Replicants are still basically human. However they are bioengineered and enhanced in some aspects, but their bodies are designed to die after only 4 years. It's tragic. Unfortunately these ones go insane and kill people in their desperation to extend their lives. What they did was wrong and they should be stopped. However the replicants are treat as slaves and told they don't have real emotions or human soul. I feel sorry for them. Replicants are capable of the same brutality and kindness of humanity. Rutger Hauer's character Roy proves he's more than a monster. In his last moments before his death he shows compassion by choosing to save Decker rather than kill him. The unicorn represents Rachel because she is special. The love scene between Decker and Rachel starts out a little cringe. Actress Sean Young who played Rachel has an interesting story about that scene. I hope you watch the sequel Blade Runner 2049
Hey girls! Forgive me if I'm explaining what you already know, but.... it felt like this point may have been missed... While Captain Bryant and Deckard are watching the short replicant film, Bryant explains that as a "fail-safe" security measure, each replicant is given a FOUR-YEAR LIFE SPAN -- so four years, that's it, they die, they stop functioning. This is important to understand the motivation of the replicants in the film. They're not just running around doing bad things to people, they have a purpose: to find a remedy, in genetic engineering,, so they won't DIE. They're trying to save their own lives, and they're running out of time! They believe Tyrell, the head of the Tyrell Corporation (which built them) might have the answer, so that's why they're doing everything they can to get to him. Of course, it turns out that he does not have the cure -- there is no cure, no engineering fix, no remedy. BTW, I also don't like the ugly way Decker treats Rachel in their "love scene". But...it IS a movie, so I'd say that one scene, to a certain extent, is perhaps not well-written. It should have had more kindness in it...IMHO. It would be nice to know if Rachel has any replicant super strength so she could defend herself, maybe a gentle crushing of Deckard...😁 Thank you Homies, I really enjoy your sharing the watching of these films with us all! Ciao!
Rachael is a replicant with a difference she has a conventional life span. The reason for this is in a novel by allan dean foster which is a sequel to the book this movie is based on.which explains that Eldon Tyrells sister and niece The real Rachel are involved in an automobile accident from which the real Rachel will never recover from her injuries. Eldon having never married or had children is emotionally very close to his niece and so snuggles a sample of her DNA from the hospital facility she is in and using his pioneering technology with the replicants. Creates an advance replicant of her as an adult. but with all the memories of his niece and her mum his sister.
Good reaction on this classic. The sequel is also interesting, though I'd say it portrays a future even grimmer than Blade Runner. If you want something where Daryl Hannah (Priss) is adorable, try the movie "Splash" - which also features Tom Hanks in an early role. For a movie which plays with the easter egg idea of being a part of the Bladerunner universe, you might like 'Soldier' - featuring a very ripped Kurt Russel.

I see you watched the original version with Deckard’s narration. There are several versions out there - the International Cut, Director’s Cut, and Final Cut.
39:54 Rutger Huaer is an amazing actor, I agree. You girls would like the 1986 movie, The Hitcher, where he's a psychotic hitchhiker terrorizing a teen who helps him out, framing him for murder. Great horror movie. Love your reaction
Great Movie! We are getting closer to the Future every year. When do we get the flying cars? Blade Runner was the 1st Beta video cassette I bought not knowing anything about the movie. Yes I had Beta before changing to VHS like everyone else had. Now everything, hundreds of films, are on my 1TB external hard drives.
This movie presented one of the greatest questions of existence. Where we come from, how much time we have, why we are here, who’s god, why our times are so short… It all meant nothing?
Blade Runner wasn’t a success when it came out in 1982, with other big films of that year like *E.T. The Extra Terrestrial* (another film you MUST see), but through the decades became a cult favorite, with the advent of home video formats, like VHS, laserdisc, DVD, Blu-ray, and streaming.
You got the version with the voice-overs! Hah! Interesting. I believe it was also the first version I saw, the release version. But later versions are much better, Final Cut, taking away the exposition and letting the atmosphere work for itself.
Glad you see the theatrical version, that is much much better than director's cut. Director's cut vanishes the Deckard's salvation by Roy, that is the true meaning of film
I am so very glad that you viewed the original theatrical release, which includes the Film-Noir style voice-over by Harrison Ford. Although his voice-reading is pretty badly acted, I liked the narration and think that it imparts some important thoughts.
I am glad that you experienced the Theatrical Cut first, as that was the only version most of us who had been around in the 80's and 90's were familiar with. There are many different versions of this film. I highly recommend a second reaction video for Blade Runner: The Final Cut in 4K UHD. I look forward to your viewing enjoyment ;)
Hello. So excited to watch you watch Blade Runner! However, I am sure many of you have pointed out that there is a director's cut that is substantially different from this version, and has become the 'standard' version. There is also a 'Final Cut', but story wise it is story-wise the same as the director's cut. I would argue that the director's/final cut versions are much better. That's just, like, my opinion, man. But the sequel (Blade Runner 2049, which is REALLY good) follows that story, not this one. So you should see either the Director's Cut or the Final Cut, so you can watch the sequel. The sequel is REALLY good. Not sure if I said that.
How did you get hold of a copy of this film with Harrison Fords narration? It was on the movie the first time I saw Blade Runner but all the times since it has been narration free.
You women are my favorite reactors! The Queen and the princess. Could you both just make a channel with each other? Such great chemistry. I am sure that tens of thousands of viewers would agree with me. Call it, The Queen and the Princess. Yes!!!
With that hair imagine Vicki in a old school movie , hair puffed and/or straight long, she can be a female general and the next day jump in a mermaid suit and have extra long straight hair for a Jack sparrow movie
In the book Blade Runner is based on, “Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?”, the story takes place in San Francisco in 1992. It was written in 1968. In 2020, with many fires in the area, San Francisco *did* look like Blade Runner! ruclips.net/video/so-FcHTWEIY/видео.html
The sets are great the constant rain and gloomy dark crowded streets it's so good so gritty ,we are left to wonder at the end, Deckard is he or isn't he ??.Really good film that stands up well today.
Decards dreams was about unicorn, only he saw them. Which is why 2nd detective made this origami of the unicorn, he gave Decard a note that he is a replicant too.
If you love Harrison Ford, you MUST watch the *Star Wars* and *Indiana Jones* films (the last one comes out June 2023). I know Lia has seen the first six Star Wars films. Harrison did this film in between those. Also great with Harrison Ford are *The Fugitive* and *Air Force One*
Ooooh, you watched a different version of the movie! It's either the Final Cut or Director's Cut that is the most common version of this movie you can find today, wouldn't mind seeing your reaction to that one as well (there are differences on those cuts, different endings & there's no narration)
He was purposely being rough with her sexually, because he was trying to get her to use new emotions, sexually, for him, she had no idea what sex was, or how it felt, or the emotions involved.
Priss’s hairdo is a copy of the hairdo in the infamous police photo of the child serial killer, myra hindley, from the mid 1960s. The photo has been referred to as ‘the embodiment of evil’.
20:30 I think you found the point of the movie: there is no real difference between humans and replicants. They say they are different but that's just an excuse to mistreat them.
I'm so happy you watched the theatrical version with the narration and happy ending. The later versions cut out the narration and ends when Deckard and Rachael get into the elevator, I personally prefer the later versions but for you it was definitely easier to understand the story with the voice-over and of course the happy ending is there for you to enjoy.

Not entirely ad lib, but Rutger Hauer did some changes he felt were better suited to Roy's journey.

Agreed!

I always suspected Vangelis lifted large parts of it from Weather Report. Well, "inspired by", shall we say.
This movie bombed at the box office in 1982 but went on to be considered by many as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time and influenced countless filmmakers. The unsung hero in this film? The timeless soundtrack by Vangelis which I still consider the greatest film score ever…
Great movie! I'm obsessed with the soundtrack...Vangelis is synth perfection
VANGELIS- spirals =)
+1 it took YEARS of waiting, but I was so happy when they finally released the original soundtrack 👍
Racheal's Song is such an amazingly beautifal song. I have been obsessed with this soundtrack aswell lol.

Brilliant writer!
I just realized the other day they pay homage to Phillip. The gun Deckard is called a PKD blaster.
The building that you liked is the " Bradbury Building " built in 1893 in downtown Los Angeles on the corner of Broadway and Third.

THIS IS CINEMA... in big letters, nothing more to say (this version is with the voice in off and the original ending... is pure gold !!! ).
One of my top 3 films.. It was way ahead of its time, and still stands today in visuals & the music of Vangelis.. I have the soundtrack on CD still 😊
You watched the theatrical release. A lot of people (including me) like the director's cut better because there's no narration; however, the narration does help the audience understand more for first time viewing.
Yeah it''s unusual to find that version. I don't think it has the unicorn sequence either. And it has that weird car drive happy ending.
@@sheert I don't think you can find it alone, unless it's a copy of the VHS. All the versions are found on the multi-disc Final Cut set.
The theatrical with the noir-ish voiceover is fine for the first timers, IMO.
Sean Young, who plays Rachel, was in another excellent 1980s movie called No Way Out, starring Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman. It's an against-the-clock political/spy thriller with more twists and levels than a game of snakes and ladders... highly recommended.

Darryl Hannah (Pris) was in a romantic comedy called “Splash” where she plays a mermaid. It also stars Tom Hanks. 🧜♀️
Yes! This is one of my favorite movies of all time 🥰
I suggest *Ghost in the Shell (1995)* for your next reaction :3
The scarlet johansen live action version of ghost in the shell is far better.
@@tileux Definitely not better but not bad at all for an adaptation
Do you two remember the actress who plays Rachael? She was the villain in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. You saw Roy in Batman Begins, and Leon in The Fifth Element.
First time in my 180 years on this planet that someone couldn't figure out if Daryl Hannah is a woman or not. So weird. Funny. :)
As others I am sure have said, this is the Theatrical release, which by many is not considered the best version.
Pris is a creepy character. She's nuts
The Replicants are still basically human.
I hope you watch the sequel
Blade Runner 2049
YAY ANOTHER LIA AND VIKI REACTION!
THEY SHOULD REACT TO BLADE RUNNER 2049 NOW!
It would be nice to know if Rachel has any replicant super strength so she could defend herself, maybe a gentle crushing of Deckard...😁
Thank you Homies, I really enjoy your sharing the watching of these films with us all!
Was Decker a Replicant/Robot?👉🏽 ruclips.net/video/jMG3fOsIBgA/видео.html Also movie trailer for part 2 Blade Runner 2049 👉🏽 ruclips.net/video/gCcx85zbxz4/видео.html
This was the version I saw in Canada when it came out in theatres
Great cyberpunk movies of all time! I seriously recommend it's sequel "Blade Runner 2049" (2017) it is just as great and visually captivating.
Where we come from, how much time we have, why we are here, who’s god, why our times are so short…
It all meant nothing?
25:34 He has to force himself a bit to try and teach a sentient robot to understand feeling and passion.
This is a movie that needs to be watched many times to get and understaning of what the movie is all about. Also many differebt cuts of the movie
Oh, I love this movie dearly!
I am so very glad that you viewed the original theatrical release, which includes the Film-Noir style voice-over by Harrison Ford. Although his voice-reading is pretty badly acted, I liked the narration and think that it imparts some important thoughts.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I can't believe they watched the version with the narration lol
Hi Leah and Vicky love your channel.
Movie about the recent past. Movie takes place in late 2019.
This sci fi movie is a masterpiece and so is it’s sequel blade runner 2049 which you should do a reaction on.

The replicants had a built in failsafe, they only live 4 years then die.
Happy new year? 2 months has past... The Homies kept that one on the rocks for a long while. 😄
The sets are great the constant rain and gloomy dark crowded streets it's so good so gritty ,we are left to wonder at the end, Deckard is he or isn't he ??.Really good film that stands up well today.
This is the theatrical cut. The Final Cut is slightly different.
Wonderful review. You have very sharp eyes and so glad you liked all the philosophy and science stuff too. Good job!
Don't know how you understand anything you just watched, cause you talked through everything.
21:55: Much like in The Terminator films
Ooooh, you watched a different version of the movie! It's either the Final Cut or Director's Cut that is the most common version of this movie you can find today, wouldn't mind seeing your reaction to that one as well (there are differences on those cuts, different endings & there's no narration)
Part two is emotional brutal and great :)
I'm still waiting for them too make a video movie based game of this movie
The game Blade Runner (1997) was pretty decent.
Good to see the original with the narration.
the 1982 theatrical version is the best
You’ve seen director Ridley Scott’s other films Alien and Gladiator.
TEARS IN THE RAIN
For another great view of the future from a 1980s perspective, watch the *Back To The Future* trilogy!
A couple other Harrison Ford movies you ladies may love, Witness and Sabrina
20:30 I think you found the point of the movie: there is no real difference between humans and replicants. They say they are different but that's just an excuse to mistreat them.
The Replicants have emotions, but because of their lack of past history, they can't control themselves, and take them to the extreme.
