Glad to hear ya'll combine your finances, it fails me how couples who should have common goals wouldn't have common combined financial goals as well. We don't have grand kids from our only daughter but I'm from a very large family, 3 brothers and 3 sisters and a multitude of nieces and nephews with spouse and their kids. Early on we made it part of our vacation plans to shop for gifts for everyone, which eventually became to much. As our family grew our gifting had to change as well. We found it easiest to have that frank discussion with each sibling and asked them to explain to their perspective families. Explaining a fixed income in retirement seems like a very understandable reason that everyone should be good with.
Yes, I am happy we combine our money. It may be considered old-fashioned these days. Thank you so much for weighing in. Since Christmas has passed, I think when I send Happy Birthday messages indvicially througout the year, I will tell each person. Most are adults now and I am sure they will understand.
We give cash. 100$ per child or less depending on our budget. This year we gave 40$. We did not gift our grown kids nor our grown grands. Some grandparents dont have the option to buy any gifts at any time and struggle to buy groceries.
Give a set amount for every occasion. The same amount for all. Birthdays one amount, Christmas one amount, if you buy a gift equal the difference to the set amount. Once the Grand children are married or out of school stop giving them gifts. Don’t start giving their boyfriends or girlfriends gifts. Weddings and showers gifts should be a set amount for family and a lower amount for others. Remember when you need money you cannot count on others. Have your money saved for you and your husband for any emergency. It is better to leave your non used money to the children. Senior care is extremely expensive. Be prepared.

I place the money in a small decorative box or bag. Combined finances/blended family here.
