- On February 21, 1870, Sheriff David Mizell, his son Will, and brother Morgan went onto the property of Moses Barber to serve an arrest warrant. Tensions between the Barbers and Mizells had been growing for years, and the Sheriff had been warned that if he set foot on Barber land he would be killed. When the group stopped at Bull Creek, a shot was fired from behind some bushes. Sheriff Mizell was killed, becoming the first casualty of the Barber-Mizell Family Feud. The feud of 1870 demonstrates how Florida was every bit as wild as the Wild West.

There are several mistakes in the history of the Mizells. They came to Jamestown, VA prior to 1835. Luke Mizell was an indentured servant to a Mr. Grey. He came prior to 1635. Also there were
five Mizell sons in the War Between the states. Luke III founded Jamesville, North Carolina in the 1700's. The book, "The way hit wuz" is fascinating. Sheriff David was my 4th great Uncle.
Thats right!. Mose is my 4th great grandfather. The got some of the years wrong also. He came to the MacClenny area in 1810.
She makes a good point about the plight of the Seminoles versus the unsuspecting settlers. In 1839, Seminoles slaughtered my ancestors during a raid on the family's cabin which was then in Columbia County. One man was instantly killed, and the mother was shot with an arrow. A young woman grabbed the children and ran to a neighbor's house while an uncle held off the attackers. Florida was a rough place, and not for the weak-hearted.

My grandma is a descendant of the Mizells and my grandpa the Barbers - no wonder they got divorced
