That was a tough break with the carbon fiber decal. I've had mixed results myself and have learned not to set my expectations too high. I built this same kit several years ago, and yours looks better in my opinion.👍
I have similar attitude towards modeling, but is mostly how I deal with such problems and not that much about expectations. Models are just fancy material things, not really something to stress about. People build/ paint puzzles, mandalas, paintings - and later they break them, paint over etc. Just to start all over again. Not saying you don't have to try your best, but it's better to tackle problems with "cold head" and enjoy solving problems and making/fixing things/models better:)

It was acrylic paint, thinned with water.

Its is always better to do it, It will not only help with primer adhesion but also will help to spot flaws.
