Why not tape some cakes together to share stability? You could use four of your metal brackets to secure 4-6 cakes for example. Great idea with the brackets on boards - great for pre-prep for bad weather conditions. I am looking at ply instead of chipboard which falls apart at the slightest whiff of rain.

That could be done, but for this show I didn't really have the budget to multiply the number of cakes and set them off at the same time...
Yeah that's true... I was praying for it not to rain x)

I would recommend against metal brackets, or at least put them on the side away from the audience. Pyrotechnics can go bang. When they do, pieces go flying. That's why most of it is made from paper, glue, chipboard, weak plastic and the like: shrapnel bad.
Where you have to use metal, bury it in sand; not so bad if sand goes flying.
BTW HDPE is far better than PVC for mortar tubes. When something goes off in the tube, PVC turns into dagger-like shards. HDPE 'banana peels' or just bulges, all or most of it stays attached and right there, and fragments (if any) are not sharp.

+Abe Coulter Actually in france, you can purchase up to professional 4" shells with out any permit or training at all! I didn't use any shells because the audience was way too close...
