Eastenders had just launched a couple of months before this to great acclaim and had started to Syphon off viewers from Coronation Street, which was getting a lot of criticism for being overly nostalgic and unrealistic. EastEnders was more gritty and was seen to be more in touch with 1980s Britain, which was seeing a huge violent crime increase. Hilda's storyline when she's broken into was likely a response to that, to try and make Coronation Street more in touch with what was happening in Britain at the time.

I thought Stan Ogden was stuck in the Victorian times expecting his tea on the table when he comes in from work, but Brian's in the same league, by the way I'm a man.
It comes from times when the man went to work and the woman's work was running the house. A situation abused by many, but not that unusual. Well done for declaring your gender by the way, you sound like an alphabet person.
