Eastenders had just launched a couple of months before this to great acclaim and had started to Syphon off viewers from Coronation Street, which was getting a lot of criticism for being overly nostalgic and unrealistic. EastEnders was more gritty and was seen to be more in touch with 1980s Britain, which was seeing a huge violent crime increase. Hilda's storyline when she's broken into was likely a response to that, to try and make Coronation Street more in touch with what was happening in Britain at the time.

Listening to Gail's landlady talk is a good reminder of what attitudes were like in her generation (pretty much all of them no longer with us). There was a Victorian obsession with marriage. Anything that happened within a marriage was acceptable. Pretty much anything that happened outside a marriage was not acceptable.

  • @ulsdon7

But since she married Brian she found out she hated being married and having Nicky so she forced herself into thinking she was trapped and believed highly in this which is the total opposite of having any critical thought, so she weaved herself into thinking everything she did was right when in reality it was not...she still wins in the end though.
