12:11 To quote a YT short; "If genitals don't define your gender, how can removing them affirm it?"
49:54 A bit of correction is required here. Newtonian Mechanics is absolutely "Correct" in every way for "Classical Mechanics". Newtonian Physics got us to the moon to within feet of our desired landing spot, and there was no requirement to utilize Einsteinian principles to achieve it.

What does it even mean to respect someone's "identity," especially when it's not real or founded in something real? What is it exactly that we are "protecting" and from what are we protecting it? What does it mean to protect something that is not real?

    • @romansidorov9067

Read Mysticism and Materialism in the wake of German Idealism so to easily grasp this coded language. An Identity means here a person who has abandoned herself by Kenosis, an act of self-emptying from images of the reality, as to be ready to become a unity with a God. God here is the Ungrund (Meister Eckhart), from which person engender true images of reality and herself, to actualise reality to by god-informed acts and knowledge.

Protecting something that is not real is protecting yourself... Someone will come and say that you and what you believe is also not real. So we tolerate for two reasons: first, to reduce hostility and conflict between people as much as we can. Second, to allow the world to grow and present new ideas, because in the history of science and ideas, the most advanced and valuable new ideas have often been persecuted and fought against, along with their owners.

What I find most interesting about this lecture is the value of science when it allows us to predict the future. The lecturer gives the excellent example of Newton’s mechanics that predicted the existence of the planet Neptune. On the other hand, political scientists, so called, on the right such as Edward Luttwak, and on the left, such as Noam Chomsky, have made predictions that proved to be wrong. So much for the science of politics, alas.

As ever, these things can be knotted. So, one can indeed agree with both the point and the objective of Sokal's '96 Transgressing the Boundaries book, but one can also draw from someone like Paul Feyerabend, Nancy Cartwright and others from the philosophy of science (in general) who query science and plenty of its sacred cows: from physics, say, what is time to evolutionary biology (with Darwin to this day, what once was Isaac Newton in classical physics). Sokal did very well to publish his '96 book. The postmodern rubbish flying around by1996 was completely off the scale. However, it is entirely good and perfectly legitimate science and philosophy to ask, say, what is the mind-body relation. There are plenty of science practioners who think that scientifically they have settled this, and equally there are as many science practioners who are fixed on the view that we have far from settled the Hard problem of consciousness. So, there are plenty of enormous issues within the philosophy of science, and the practice of science, which in turn shape what is science and what is good practice of science in society; I'd like to think we can all agree on this, but without saying that any one who questions science is Sokal's legitimate target from his '96 book.
PS I would still die to know what Sokal thinks of Paul Feyerabend.

XX males have male genitalia including male gonads, yet no male gamates. It's an extremely rare intersex condition that defies simple classification. It occurs when an SRY gene more or less hops from a spermatozoa carrying a Y chromosome to a spermatozoa carrying an X chromosome. Very rare and random mutation, of sorts. With all that in mind, gamate production is still determined by karotype and gamates are binary. Please reply with a correction if I have described any of that incorrectly.

I'm a cognitive linguist. The über post-modernist Jacques Derrida explored the difference between written and spoken language in his _Grammatology._ It is not at the level of how I see it in terms of interpretactics related to Broca's and Wernicke's areas and the arcuate fasciculus between them, but it's pretty good for a non-specialist who can get over his terrible writing. (He didn't orate well either, so no contradiction.)
[Edit] Thanks for the video. I've already written in my head a 4-page section for my critique on rationality and objectivity because of it. I'm taking "gravity is a linguistic and social construct" from his paper, because it's true. The only way to miss the point is to promote the ideologies of rationalism and objectivism, which Sokal does here.

First, the identity ideologues are not left. They are right. True left are marxists who are not interested in the religious debates about whether sex is determined by biology or by social constructions. Unfortunately this true left was defeated by the neoliberalism and today is present only at social margins. Second, both American corporate discourses’ (the democratic and republican) preoccupation with this religious aspect of life is a non-issue. This preoccupation is only serving the interests of the super rich who are interested in keeping people’s attention away from how they rob them and push them into the state of servitude and submission.

'Astronomers must first accept astrology as true' - your example of obsurdity, and I agree.
But you also shame people for questioning climate change, seeming to imply they must first accept assertions of climate change as true before they can question anything?
How about people question ANYTHING, and science answers on the merits. Question climate change and answer. How hard is that? But still YOU shame.
No subject should be taboo. All subjects should be open to scrutiny, ESPECIALLY one that claims itself to be scientific.
But that's ok, I see your virtue signaling about Trump, yourself politicizing - I get it, you have to dog whistle to your "team" by making claims that 'oh no! Science might be questioned by orange man bad!'
Try not to speak out of both sides of your mouth. Do better.

The craziest thing is all the categories of pseudoscience that he correctly pointed out are littered throughout climate science, but nobody seems to notice. You can take any study in gender, race, or equity and find a "climate scientist" regurgitating the same study, but framed through climate change. The methods and data in the studies related to climate science is ridiculous, "climate gentrification" is my current favorite, and a study on climate refugees was just a rambling conspiracy theory dressed up as a study. Peer review needs help

The whole talk was about the implementation of the scientific method and allowing the works that implemented this method to be published. Astrology doesn't use the scientific method, climate science does. Much of climate denial comes from extreme conspiracies theories orchestrated by conservative think tanks (read Merchants of Doubt for its history) and lack of basic scientific education. For example, the critique that CO2 concentration in the atmosphere is too small to cause global warming, was already resolved in the late 1800s! But people are too lazy to even try to find an answer to their questions, they prefer echo chambers.
Are there problems with the modelling? Sure, as with any model in any field, one has to take into account error bars! If you really want to be skeptical, apply the scientific method: 0) state your hypothesis, 1) learn climate science for real (understand its equations of motion), 2) learn how to model in 3d grid the fluid dynamics in climate science, 3) grab a dataset and experiment with it, there is tons of open datasets. Instead of just being "skeptical" by repeating ignorant comments from grifters, you can actually do science and clear the doubts you have. This is the great thing about the current state of open science. The next best thing you can do is have some humility and have a reasonable level of trust for the thousandths of scientists across the world (hence, different ideologies) that have done this research for over a century and have considered almost every possible question a novice may have.

Astrology and Mythology are the origin of Science and Religion, universally traditions tell in great detail of the abrupt cyclic change from blue skies and sunshine to destruction from The Taurid Meteor Stream and its Impacts Winters. Ideologically, one should be well aware of this fact before one aims to control the slight change that in all probability is caused by us burning everything we get our hands on. We all know of The End of the World and are determined through sympathetic magic of debauchery and misguided ceremonies such as the Aldebaran Colored Heifer to entice The End of all Ends, when cycles do not have an end! Today's Science reminds me of the apes bashing bones around the monolith in the film 2001 Space Odyssey, yet they should be wearing lab coats. Archaeologists truly believe the iconic Bull symbology and the fiery serpents from the sky are about virility, rejuvenation, and life giving. Always looking down with dirty minds, like our world is an anomaly from inner solar system space debris intersecting this Pale Blue Dot. The recent public herald from The Society for American Archaeologists states that white hot ablation from Space Falls is about the hubris of light dermal shade, like they do not understand Anthropomorphism and Zoomorphism. They are actually pretending not to know what I speak as they obfuscate and expunge The Pleiades, the radiant of said stream, from the record. Y'all better actuate the paradigm shift before the engine over-revs, but who cares, we will all get a brand new planet out of all of this.
