Thanks! Highly educational and shows me where I was ‘going wrong’… I haven’t been playing quite the correct rhythm pattern and my chords have been ‘similar but different’…. as you said - ‘not quite Brazilian’!
all explanations are great. what a good teacher ! You must also be a teacher at schools, coach, tutor. As a German speaking person, I know you have come a long way, incredible simplifying high level chords and beautiful melody.
That was great! I could never enjoy beauty of bossa nova and jazz until I found this video. Thank you so much! There’s no time to waste before I learn the chord progression with my classical guitar!
Oh, this is several weeks old. Unfortunately in addition to that ripped blood vessel, I really badly bruised the same hand and now can't move my ring finger and middle fingers at all. It took a little over a month but I’m more or less comfy playing this now and it’s thanks to your amazing breakdown and lesson! Cheers! What’s the next Latin jazz song you’d recommend someone learn who just pinned this one down?
Try "O Barquinho". It's a sori firm song too, this easy to memorize. It's included in my Bossa Nova Patterns lesson. Just type "Bossa Nova Guitar Patterns Guitarversum" in the YT search box.
This was a very helpful lesson - the only thing that is maybe a bit confusing is stating that "we are in they key of C minor" at the beginning, since later we do go into that 2-5-1 in Db Major, as you mention when it comes.
But the song is on C minor 😊. Jazz tunes modulate to other keys ask the time. All The Things Your Are modulates to 6 or 7 different keys, yet it is in the key of Ab. Always look at the ending chord of the song. That's usually the key the song is in.
Traded lunch for a Moto ride today👍... starving now, so enjoying your Thursday lesson and smiles while stuffing my face! BB is one of my favs, Sandra🙌! Although I’ve played this one with the trio and quintet for years, as always, your tutorial is enlightening! It’s a great tune! Nice job, as always 👏😄. Be safe!
I love this song. I do have a question. I am learning on a Telecaster, I do believe jazz will be my main style. Would you recommend keeping the Tele, or changing out for a hollowbody Ibanez, Framus, or Eastman. Thanks.
You can keep the Tele and roll that tone pot off a bit. If you're up for a Christmas gift to yourself and want a new guitar, check out my video "Jazz Guitar Gear Recommendations and amp settings".
She does the rhythm perfectly right. Several guitarists plays ~ wrongly ~ the bass (tonic) note in the first beat. This is a common mistake of players who doesn't understand correctly the Brazilian beat. She plays it just great.
This is SO cool! With all respect to your husband I think that the merit is entirely of your teacher because I know a *lot* of _Brazilian_ guitar players who plays it wrong. It took me ages to figure it out that I was doing it completely wrong! Bossa nova (as well samba and other derivative Brazilian rhythms) are tricky even for us (natives) because the time of the beats isn't intuitive. So it's a false assumption to believe that all Brazilian people born with this in the blood: if you aren't trained to play it right you will fail! LoL! There is a joke here in Brasil which says that we, Brazilian, all guess that we know how to play/dance samba and to speak Spanish. The second part is because we are surrounded by several Spanish speaking countries and because Portuguese is so "similar" to Spanish (actually it's not). You would ROFL watching a Brazilian who never was formally trained to speak Spanish trying to talk in "Portuspanish" to an Argentine. Ask your husband, he will know to explain it better! Cheers and keep the awesome work!
Is the thing about Brazilian style 'and the alternating 5th in the bass related to the string 5th stri with not as such, or related to going _down a fourth but nor _up a fifth. ? Could we skip playing the bass when we have a bass player laying down the bass? The backing track has a great acoustic bass sound.
You do? Yes they got more expensive over the years. Not sure if the first run are desired, but you could be sitting on a little treasure, bc they're rare for sure.
I do have that in my reoertoure, but recording gypsy songs us a pain in the butt 😊. Acoustic guitar requires a mic to sound good, and that one bleeds into the vocal mic. Hard to seperate for editing.

why can't you bar the 5th and 6th strings and just lift/deaden/press each string you're playing without moving the position of your finger from 5th to 6th strings? it's the same difference and less movement, isn't it? this is not the same as letting each string ring out together and creating dissonance, etc..what's the difference?
