I have used twisted German cast on for years and have tried casting on in pattern numerous times. Thanks to the clarity of your instructions, I discovered how to locate and bring the yarn through the triangle instead of moving my thumb! I have always done the twisted German knit cast on using the triangle method because it’s much faster for me and keeps my knitting much neater. I just found the same to be true of using the triangle method to cast on in German twisted purl stitches. In almost all of the videos I have watched other peoples’ hands doing twisted German cast on, I have noticed that the hands have more flexible joints or are double-jointed, whereas my hands do not have that kind of flexibility at all. Moving my finger around is torture to me, but pulling the yarn through the triangle is easy and very efficient. I have never seen a video using the triangle method for the twisted German purl stitch, but you video encouraged me to look more closely at the possibilities. Thank you!
Where have you been all these years I’ve been knitting?!?! I’ve been doing the German twisted wrong, and not realized it (only getting one twist in, not two)! This is really a great demonstration; thank you, thank you, thank you!😂
Patty, I was struggling and a knitting friend passed on your brilliant video. I am a dedicated toe up sock knitter and trying cuff down for first time. Was just about to give up until I watched your fantastic video. Thank you so very much for such clear instructions.
Hands down the best German twisted cast on tutorial so far that I've seen, very clearly explained on the construction of the cast on, and very logical, now this cast on makes sense to me more. Thanks for the tutorial! Keep it up!
I love how you showed this stitch technique. Slowly, and also showing how when doing the purl, the twist, and then showing the full method! Excellent! I had never seen how to cast on the knit method and purl method in the Old Norwegian Cast On!
@Patty Lyons • I can't believe you made such a well photographed video 8 years ago. The high quality of the video matches the high quality of your instruction. Thank you. 👍
This is, by far, the clearest and best explained video of the cast on! I early appreciate your breaking down the cast on into the "stitches" created - I understand it so much better now. Just love your instructions, and your Craftsy class!
Thanks for the great explanation. That breakdown really helped in my understanding it. I may even remember how to cast on in pattern. If not a short visit back here and I’ll have it again. Thanks again
Oh I love a good WHY. I use this cast on, and I have my little mantra that I say to keep myself on track, but I’ve never *understood* what I’m doing because I never analyzed the WHY. Thank you for that light bulb moment!
I was looking for the perfect stretchy CO for socks especially IN PATTERN and I found it! You have never failed me yet when I'm looking for the right stitch to solve a problem!
I think a double crochet bind off matches really well. I teach that in a live class. I haven't filmed it yet. I'll be filming a WHOOOLE bunch of videos next year to build a library of free (No ads - grrr you tube) on my education platform: education.pattylyons.com/. You can set up a free acct and join the knitting community group there and find out all the new info.
I love your tutorials. As a left handed knitter I have pretty successfully reversed instructions for 60 or so years. Some variations on cast-ons and bind-offs like this one I would like to see for left handed Knitters.
This video totally answered my question for German twisted cast on ribbing! Thank you. Now I need to practice many times until my mind is clear on knit and purl :-D
Thank you! This was a very nice, clear explanation of the cast-on, especially in-pattern. I just wish the audio was better. I really had to crank up the volume to hear you. I see that you posted this three years ago, but if you can edit the video to boost the audio, that would make your tutorial outstanding. :-)
Sorry about that. The volume is fine on my laptop, but all computers vary. It is an old video and not shot with my current equipment, however, You Tube has removed the feature where you can edit sound after a video has been posted.
Hello and thank you so much for this tutorial! It helped me learn the German Twisted cast on but also gave me a better understanding of how the long tail cast on “works” - the anatomy of the stitches. My question is this: when I use the german twisted cast on in a 2x2 rib pattern and then join in the round for my first row, the knit stitches in the cast on are very tight and appear to be twisted. Is this normal? It is very hard to tell if they actually are twisted - the legs are basically equal. The pearl stitches are much better and I don’t seem to have this problem. Is it a result of me doing something wrong in the cast on? Any guidance is appreciated, thanks!
The cast on is working the first row and these stitches are mounted Western (leading leg in the front). Are you an Eastern or Combo knitter who works the knit through the back loop? I can point you to some classes that can help.
I always have the leading leg in front so I guess I am a Western knitter. I have knit a couple of other samples and I think my problem may be that my cast on is too tight. I will try again. Thank you for the quick response!
Great cast on and easy to use after a few "oops". General question, tho...do you count the first twist on the needle as a counted stitch? If so, then to follow most patterns for k1 p1 ribbing..would your first cast on be a purl? (New knitter, here)
The first loop is a stitch. Every pattern is going to be different. Some patterns start with a RS row, some with a WS row. Your first twist will be whatever the first stitch is. Just because I demo making a k as your second and a p as your third, doesn't mean you have to. So you can cast whatever row 1 of your pattern is. RUclips has a volume that's separate from your computer. Try turning the volume all the way up on both your computer and your youtube. If you still can't hear, you can turn on the subtitles.
Thank you for your reply. I have an iPad and the volume was as high as it could go and I can’t get into you tube to turn it up there as I think that is for “windows” users. I appreciate your suggestions, thank you.
Thank you very much for taking the time to help me overcome my problem. I have tried to turn up the volume on RUclips but there is no way I can see to do this on an iPad. I googled instructions how to do this but I only saw it being done on Windows where the screen had an icon you could click on but it is not there on the iPad screen. Thank you once again for your help. I like the video by the way👍
Thank you for explaining this technique so well. I love learning how to do things and understanding what is happening there.

I'm so glad you like it! Just a taste of the videos I offer in my video sweater classes: www.ravelry.com/bundles/sweater-class
Your analysis of long-tail and the variation for German Twisted enabled me to understand German Twisted for the first time! Thank you!
so glad it helped!!
This is a great tutorial. Clear and concise and great visuals. I appreciated the slow mo too. Extremely helpful.

How do you do it at the beginning of a row
@Patty Lyons • I can't believe you made such a well photographed video 8 years ago. The high quality of the video matches the high quality of your instruction. Thank you. 👍
Thank you for these spot on directions. You are the best!
best explanation ever!! You're the best!!!

Thanks so much!
Hear hear!!
Amazing and unique video with twisted purl cast on!!! Thank you for this! Now I know how to do 2x2 stretchy ribbing cast on.
Thanks. I'll practice the knitting one as presented. You're the best teacher.
I watched several videos on how to do this and it wasn't working. You finally helped me figure it out. Thank you!
Thanks so much Patty. You made it so clear for me. Now I’m going to cast on a hat!
Thank you so much for simple, slowly, clear explanations, soooo great♥️👍
Excellent explanation. I love love love the why's of everything. Thank you.
The best tutorial I’ve seen on how to do this. Thank you so much.
So glad you liked it!
Absolutely the best explained cast on video I ever saw, thanks Patty.
I'm so glad you like it!
This is genius - I've been doing it by catching that little loop and your method of pivoting the thumb is so much easier!
Thanks for the great explanation. That breakdown really helped in my understanding it. I may even remember how to cast on in pattern. If not a short visit back here and I’ll have it again. Thanks again
This tutorial is complete and very clear. Thank you
wow! best video ever. thank you Patty Lyons!!!
Awesome thank you! Just learned this and your way is very satisfying. This is an enjoyable cast on.
Oh I love a good WHY. I use this cast on, and I have my little mantra that I say to keep myself on track, but I’ve never *understood* what I’m doing because I never analyzed the WHY. Thank you for that light bulb moment!
Thank you very much for video! I have watched quite a few videos with german cast on and your video is the best to learn german cast on 🤩!
+10 !!! Extra excellent!! A must view for every knitter - novice (like me) or expert.
+dukeofpurl Aw, thanks. In 2016 I promise to get back to making more RUclips Videos.
YW! I see that you're on Ravelry!! I'm DukeofPurl there!! Oops - I see we've _just_ became "friends"!! LOL
I was looking for the perfect stretchy CO for socks especially IN PATTERN and I found it! You have never failed me yet when I'm looking for the right stitch to solve a problem!
Incredibly helpful!!!
Thanks for these awesome videos. I too love to understand the why.
Thank you!! Would this be good for top down socks?
this is so helpful, I can't thank you enough!
HI Patty, thank your for your tutorial. Just wondering if you have a tutorial to bind off to matching this German cast off. Thanks in advance.
I think a double crochet bind off matches really well. I teach that in a live class. I haven't filmed it yet. I love your tutorials. As a left handed knitter I have pretty successfully reversed instructions for 60 or so years. Some variations on cast-ons and bind-offs like this one I would like to see for left handed Knitters.
I have a video on the long tail cast on holding the needle in your left hand. It will really help. This is just a small variation of that.
Very well explained, Patsy. "Follo-able" indeed. Thank you
You are so welcome
First time I've seen the purl option. Thank you so much.
Glad you like it!
Is there much noticeable difference in appearance and/or stretchiness when you cast on in pattern vs just the singular knitwise german cast on?
Mind blown. Thanks for sharing.
Wow! Several "A-Ha" moments. Thank you so much.
This video totally answered my question for German twisted cast on ribbing! Thank you. Now I need to practice many times until my mind is clear on knit and purl :-D

totally brilliant
My favourite cast on! I'm looking for an equally stretchy and matching cast off. Any suggestions?
There are sooo many, but a simple variation, that will create a stretchy cast on can be found in my cast on and bind off playlist.
Great. I think maybe only vid in pattern. Thank you.

"Follow-able" I meant, of course. Patsy, is this the same as the Old Norwegian cast on?
It is
Patty
Brilliant!
Thank you, thank you!!!
