Fages actually got 2 medals, the Jock McHale which goes to every premiership coach, and also one that the players got. He kept the Jock and gave O the other one in a team meeting the Thursday after the GF. Story hasn't gained much traction unfortunately but you can google it and find out
As a Collingwood supporter I was so happy for Brisbane to win it with Fagan as coach. I like the guy he is a true leader of men and it was great to see him
Remember all the times when Fages said " We Will Learn From It" after every loss, and everyone was whinging around him, i.e media, fans...Well they certaintely did. They won the premiership. Absoutely Phenomenal 🦁
Called him too soft, not a tactician etc. Love how he showed them all wrong. It’s one of the greatest coaching stories and achievements. Media punditry is poison
crazy that Bevo, Simpson, and Fagan were all assistant coaches at hawthorn during their dynasty and have all gone on to win premierships as senior coaches at other clubs
Fages was more than an assistant; he was head of coaching and development between 2008 and mid-2013, while he was also the general manager of football alongside senior coach Alastair Clarkson between mid-2013 and the end of 2016. I could almost argue he was Clarkos's boss. 😁
They had no reason to be arrogant. They weren't dominant towards the end of the year when it was important. Sure for most of the season they were amazing, but they started losing and struggling against teams that had no right to win. Freo in Sydney was the main one, but Port Adelaide pumping them by 112 was disgraceful. Bulldogs beating them by 39 at the S.C.G. disgraceful, St.Kilda beating them......disgraceful and they wanted to be arrogant? At least Pies last year got the job done, even though we fell off towards the end of the year and struggled in the finals, at least we won, so it all worked out, Swans were woeful for a 1st placed side.
@SilentHotdog28 Sydney is a non-Victorian side, so this type of performance wobble is baked in. Their upper bound is 17 wins. To increase that, they would need to travel less. We see Victorian sides put up 18 or more minor round wins often, because their fixturing is easier. Neutral games statistically behave similarly to home matches, so in a year where a Victorian side is good, they win more and wobble less than an equivalent non-Vic club. It's not fair to judge Sydney in this sense. If they given say Collingwood's travel itinerary, they would have had a much more consistent season, and likely a more successful finish.
Brisbane has a huge premiership windows, as you can see there is 12 young guys there playing with another 15 ready next year to make it , so hey they have years ahead for more successful times
