Nice setup and Instructable! I have two stair cases that I really want to light up similar to what you've done. While I'm confident I'd have a blast on the build and drafting an Instructable. I lack the persuasive talent necessary to convince my wife of the merits. Thanks for sharing you efforts so that I may live vicariously!

+Paul Aitchison Thanks for your interest! You can follow the following link to my instructable where I outline the entire process. I am using an arduino micro controller to process all the logic and motion sensors at the bottom and top of the stairs.

That’s awesome and exactly what I’m looking to do for my stairs. Do you think it would work with rug stairs or how can I mount them without kids pulling it off?
I also have carpeted stairs and I'm just about to give this a go, Im going to use 45 degree aluminium profile with diffuser. i figure I can cut the carpet where it turns at the bullnose and the profile will hold the carpet in place

Hey Serge, everything here is doable I guess but this adruino thing just scares me a little bit. First of all there are so many adruino uno controllers on ebay so I really don't know which one is the right one. And another thing is that bad ass programming of the controller. Is it really that simple even knowing Ive never worked with it? I mean - how hard it might be if I want only single colored led strips use? And the last thing - can you adjust the speed of them strips to light up?
Should be straight forward if you follow the instructable. Most arduino boards will work and the code is uploaded in the instructable. Just be sure to match the pins correctly. Good luck!

Hi Serge, I notice on the diagram you have 16 strips but later on you say 15 * 35 which seems correct as your code is for 525, was there a change or have I missed something. I also have 16 steps but for ease I would miss the bottom one as its so low and using your code exactly as it is would help me being brand new to arduino. Great set of stairs, very impressed
Remember, 16 includes 0 to 15 positions, in Hexadecimal, if that helps.10 in Hex = 16 in Decimal! Maybe that's why?

On the instructables.com you say that you use a 5v 60A power supply, that's ~300w, you only need 180w for a full 10m length 60led/m strip. is there a reason to overpower it?
You should only ever use 80%of a transformer
Exactly what @jackofalltrades said. After getting your required power consumption multiply it by 1.2 to prevent your PSU from overheating and failing prematurely. The more safety factor you have the less the PSU struggles providing power!

Alot of people have made really awesome effects. Should be able to research and find some code. Change the # or pixels and apply it to your application!

what PID sensors should I use for this application?
adam kingston I believe this is the model of the PIR sensor I used: HC-SR501. but any arduino compatible PIR sensor would work. do a search for arduino PIR sensor and you can use any of those. depending on the model, the code may need to be changed for the trigger from HIGH to LOW or vice versa. some sensors send a HIGH signal when triggered, some send a LOW signal. you can test by using a DMM on the signal pin of the sensor or just by trial and error. you have a 50/50 chance. good luck!

Yes, an easy way of doing this is by adding a delay(ms) in the loop. Replace ms by milliseconds

Serge on your diagram what does the 230ohm squiggle line mean to the LDR?
Serge what about a good bread terminal for all your led power and grounds to connect to instead of wiring
@@hollywoodfilms100its a pull down resistor. Look up pull up and pull down resistor. In other projects, it works without a pull down but I think it's a best practice. I'm not an EE so google would be able to explain it better! Having a ground and power distributor means extra wire length. Which equals more resistance and more heat!

@@hollywoodfilms100 good choice! It was also diffuse the light evenly. Yes the pull down resistor just ensure there is a clear signal and keeps communication errors to a minimum

nice job, I have fitted 1 neopixel strip with 137 leds under my hand rail, but I am totally new to Arduino code, is simple to change your code to utilise this , and do away with the pir sensor, thanks

what if the stairs are ceramics and cant access the back side ?
Andrey Garcia I would route the wire along the edge of the stairs/tile and put a bead of clear silicone chauk over the wire to secure it.

The power is under the stairs in the basement. The proximity sensors are in a 3d printed case one the bottom and top of the stairs.

Thanks for the video. Just an observation, you don't really need to show us that you drill every riser, you could drill just one or two and we get that you have to do them all. Also we don't really need to watch you vacuum your stairs. Just saying that makes the vid less watchable.

Never said you were forcing me to do anything but that would in fact be the only way you could get anyone to do this. The LEDs aren't supposed to be aimed at the person so they can have an epileptic attack walking up the stairs. And where did you get "New Years Fireworks" from?
