    I have a Newfoundland born December 6th 2018 and he his adorable! We nicknamed him "fat butt" for pretty obvious reasons Newfoundlands are so irresistibly cute

    Yesterday I took my 5 month old Newfoundland swimming for the first time. I had the same worry that he would swim too far. I was ready to jump and swim after him at any second. He did very well though, and I didn't need to worry. He had a fantastic day at the lake, and I brought home a happy, wet, and tired pup. Can't wait to take him again!

    Swimming and rescue are instinctive to Newfies. The first summer we did some swimming with our Nana she always had to swim near our kids to protect them. One day she clamped down on my arm and would not let go until she pulled me to shore. She was serious about rescuing me because she left tooth bruises on my wrist. Now we make sure to have her water retrieval toy with us or she goes after our arms to save us.

    My Leonberger saw his first lake at 12 weeks ,walked straight into the water on a boat ramp and started swimming instantly, had trouble getting him back

    When my Landseer Ichinojo was about 5 months old I took him for his first water trip to Loch Tay. There was no hesitation - as soon as I took off the leash he jumped right in and swam nonstop for a good 10 minutes before he got tired and came back to shore. Not long after that I took him to Loch Ness and he jumped right off the boat and started swimming towards another boat a few hundred feet away, and the people must've thought he was the Loch Ness Monster 😆

    We’re hoping to take our Newfie puppy to lake Lanier this summer! We spend a lot of time there, we love it.

    Note to human: Don't leave leash on doggie while they're in the water. Not good.

    I also have a Newfoundland dog and her first swim (in 2010) was also at Lake Lanier. There’s the Old Federal Boat Launch off of Jim Crow Rd. (I was surprised by the street name too), which is where we took her when she was 11 weeks old. She took to the water just like yours did. It seems to be an innate talent with Newfs. Brought back really good memories watching your video. You have a beautiful puppy! And your fun is just beginning. Pro tip: get a workhorse vacuum (no bagless ones) for the tumbleweeds of shedded fur your dog will create. Mine is on her 4th...

    Very very cute.....you shouldn't be worried though....Newfies were born to swim. They are better swimmers than they are runners.

      Thanks bunches USC Flash and true that! I hope someone can help us figure out why he is not interested in our salt water pool though? May be related to depth perception? We welcome your comments and suggestions :-)

      Mystic Monse sounds silly but it may sting his eyes and the pads on his paws....probably not it, but it is possible

    • @mysticmonse2188
      @mysticmonse2188  10 лет назад

      Anything is possible though he splashes around a lot at the first step only ...then makes a dive into the flower beds to get all muddy! Could it be he is scared to jump?

    • @USCFlash
      @USCFlash 10 лет назад

      Mystic Monse yeah some dogs just dont like to jump in to the water...my golden retrievers loved to jump....my uncle's yellow lab wont do it, always goes in the steps.
      try surrounding him with people, not pushing him or anything, just closing off the left, right and back, then throw a toy that he really likes into the water, and see if he jumps with a lot of positive verbal encouragement

    These dogs are bred to swim. They can pull a drowning person out of the water. They have web-paws, an oily flat outter coat and a thick oily undercoat and long legs that make them good swimmers.....

    • @mysticmonse2188
      @mysticmonse2188  5 лет назад +1

      Yup! That's exactly the reason why we got him in the first place since we live near lake, keep kids safe there and at own pool :D

      There are several areas around lake that have public access. If you are on Twitter, DM me at @MysticMonse!

  • @BiednyMisiu

    Please, do not let him do that with his leash attached. It can get caught by something in the water like a bench or something and he can get stuck and get really upset.

    • @mysticmonse2188
      @mysticmonse2188  9 лет назад +4

      +BiednyMisiu Your concern is valid - thank you, but know the lake is deep, we are taught this in training and I would have swam in to get him if need be :) ps notice rope on Newfs water rescue video...that's how they pull boats to rescue stranded people. xoxo

      May I suggest that the line is attached to the D ring on a body harness. That way he will not feel a tug on his neck like a correction. Also a pull on the harness will get him out of most difficulties. All my dogs over 30 years have started on a line. This youngster has confidence, wonder how he is doing now

      Hi David thanks for all your comments! Bodhi is doing well and is almost 3yrs old and I just had him shaved for the hot Atlanta summer though he looks a bit funny:)

      My dad was a Veterinarian (now passed) so I would normally agree yet Bo loves it and that's what is impt!! He is literally a different personality for weeks and it does grow back fast!! The A/C is cranked as I like it colder inside too and he only is outside during walks or swims after exercising anyway. Shaving was recommended by award winning and the best groomer in ATL... in fact several VIP's with Newfs go there also. I do appreciate your comments though:D

    Newfoundland are natural swimmer in in fact I herd now I don't know if its true but I was once told that captin would get a couple of newfoundlands and tie ropes on them and the newfoundland would help the ships on land.

    • @mysticmonse2188
      @mysticmonse2188  8 лет назад +1

      +jerkygirlx Wow! Heard they also were trained to help bring in the daily catch of fisherman's nets. Wish they had the technology then to capture video of some of that for us, as that would have been cool to see! Cheers :)
