Wish I had seen this a few weeks ago... my E46 exactly the same type sound, then a slight ticking for a couple of weeks, then clonk! Took my back disk off yesterday and the pin had pulled through the back plate as you described. Bodged it for now with a bolt and washers, will buy new plates and cut them so no need to remove the hub. Great video, look forward to the update. 🙂
Thanks bob, we are working on it currently and have sorted the brakes out, so should be landing that video in the coming weeks when we get it fixed up
I think it's the bargain of the century! Sort out the brakes and give it a bit of a hoover out, I would be prepared to pay £1250 for it (Hypothetically). I wouldn't personally be bothered about the service history for the age and price. I put it in for an oil change and a search down the scrappy for the covers for the battery etc, yeah think that would be a good two years cheap motoring for someone there, especially with 110k diesel.

Well worth a grand this for a winter hack! I’ve had my e46 estate for 7 years and in fairness it’s been like Trigger’s brush, but it’s never let me down and ran well in -8 degree temps last night over the hills.
Common things I’ve had to replace over the years due to wear & tear:
- front suspension refresh and all bushes, and lower arms, antirollbar, drop links etc.
- propshaft centre bearing & guibo
- rear suspension (shocks & springs) and all bushes and diff bushes
- rear wheel bearings, inboard brake shoes and backing plates
- discs & pads
- radiator, expansion tank, both thermostats and water pump
- swapped turbo for a hybrid; injectors refurbed
- new clutch
- aux belt & pulleys
Some of that done preventive rather than necessary, but they are easy to fix for the DIY mechanic. Would be great to save this and see it kept on the road. Good luck!
Many thanks torque steer, yes will be working on it this week after being bogged down in the workshop on other jobs so all being well we can turn it around for sale

Just found your channel and im about to binge watch my way through your videos. I actually love these kind of budget cars as they are perfect for the d.i.y enthusiast and when they do eventually die can be thrown away at not much loss and replaced with another

Blow the arches in give it a good valet even if you dont retail it you can always put through the block and make a good drink on it
Nice little Beemer you got there. Find it quite rusty on the arches, the result of previous repainting? Given the low mileage it suffered more than you would normally expect. OTOH, if the airco works and you can get the paintjob done without breaking the bank, I think you may earn a nice profit. I suspect (hope) that the noisy suspension-ish thing is easy to fix.
Hope so too, we are stripping it down this week to have a look at the brakes, been meaning to get to it for few weeks now but other vehicles have jumped the line. Will be releasing a part 2 on this video when we get it sorted (all being well) thanks for watching
These rust badly on the arches full stop, regardless of mileage.
E36 are a nite mare for rust such a shame tho
HEY... those £1 meatballs are a lifesaver when you come home drunk and want a fast easy meal before bed. Cover them with grated cheese and stick them in the microwave for a few moments...voila.

I’ve got a 2003 same colour even. I got it at 3 yrs old in 2006 Service history, every MOT from the first only thing wrong are the 2 front wings other than that it’s Immaculate and it’s only done 55, 251 miles it’s a better spec than this one too. I was looking at what it’s worth the other day because I know secondhand car prices have gone up and it came back at about £ 3000 to £3500.

That is a lot of car for the money.
If it's got the M47 engine, then it is a very reliable lump. My E91 320d touring M Sport (2006 so same engine), was really reliable and fuel efficient.
I sold it on 147k and it still ran sweet as a nut.

theres a temp dial by the two centre vents for the AC. If you turn it to blue itll make the ac blow cold and red will make it blow warm-ish

Yep, this got me with my old bmw a few years back, i thought it wasn’t working, but once I put the slider to 3 blue dots, it was ice cold 😁

I believe this model year are reliable than the current ones
Some of the later BMW's did suffer with timing chain issues, so your not wrong I guess. This engine is no where near as quick or efficient as the more modern engines but was a decent reliable engine, thanks for watching

familiar noise... My 320d cab did the same in June and was the handbrake shoe.
Been reasonably trouble free for four years but now has an engine management light that just doesn't want to be fixed.

hardly worth sweating about the small stuff. i would try sort out to get a couple of years driving. cosmetically it very nice. that food is an invite for fpur legged s. very impressive engine bay.
Lee keep the BMW contact your friend for the paper work and then do all the work on the beautiful car and then put it up for show room price

Mostly money down seats, we used to get a lot of ex police cars, they always had drugs stashed down the back of the seats which was worrying

I think the E46 looks better in a cabriolet format in Imola Rot-II with the full grey nappa leather interior, hardtop and the M-Sport Package because I've never took to the face-lift touring design

ES did have air con as standard mate (it was climate which was the cost option)

I had a 2002 one of these with the M 47 engine and it was fully loaded the SE model. It was probably the best car. I have had and I always had problems with the brakes, the rear hand brake shoes sit behind the rear discs with little clips and they can ping off and rotate round when the wheel is going round and get stuck and lock your back wheel on sometimes easy fix
This is what's happened to this one mark, all being well we should turn it around and it can go again and give a new owner some reliable motoring. Thanks for watching 👍

I miss my e46 220 m sport in silver the mv2 alloys was the best ones that came on the e46 in my opinion I prefer the e46 to my e91 more comfortable better driving position it was much quicker I regret selling now

I have an e46 316i that has now white smoke ,due to the engine that somehow is eating coolant. It broke 2 days ago, the car was ok in the last 2 years.
What engine do you recommend for the future? Should it be diesel? Are they more reliable?
This diesel engine ran upto 2007 and was very reliable in the BMW's

Don’t know why Bmw continued to use this handbrake setup. My drives on an incline and I’m tightening it yearly.
Not a great setup, its also common on Merc's. its much easier to just run a rear calliper with a internal ratchet handbrake on the caliper, little bit over kill bmw handbrakes
Leave car in gear. I’ve been doing that for years.

It would to be fair, the trader I bought it from dropped off the service history for it after filming and its FSH, so really want to get this sorted in the new year, will be doing a part 2 on this one

The front looks kinda modern, but the back looks really old.
Yes it shows it age to the rear, They drive very well for a 25 year old design it has to be said, many thanks for the comment and watching

No service history is a bad look if you're wanting a reasonable ££ return. Off to the scrappers.

@@carukchannel don’t underestimate the dES! They don’t have the font fogs or climate (manual air on was standard!) - or controls on that M Sport steering wheel. The ES also has the M Sport suspension (slightly lowered) vs the SE. Finally, that 2.0 diesel is strong (mine did 50mpg even if I drove it like I stole it and had 150BHP). Being post facelift there’s no swirl-flap ingestion concern. Oh, those 16” standard ES alloys are also better than lager alloys (my first had upgraded 17” alloys from the dealer) … E46’s on 17” and above alloys tend to “tramline”. For people like me in the know at the time these really are superb. You buy a BMW if you enjoy driving, right? Stuff the climate, that firmer and lower suspension off the top model is great through bends. If I had the money I’d be trying to buy this off you and whack my UK03BMW plates on her. Oh, finally, 2003 launch cars came with 3yrs free servicing from new. This had increased to 5yrs when I bought my 05 plate second ES - so worth checking those early years!!
You buy on condition with a car like this, not service history so much.

never made a part 2 but I will do, it was laid up for over a year at the body shop and when it retunes in the next few weeks I will do a special episode on it 👍

Hi dan thanks for watching, I have been buying and selling vehicles for 17 years and have sold literally thousands of cheap used cars, I decided to film my purchases and expand the content from there, of course I am aware other channels in the motor trade film there work and I also enjoy there content and sub so naturally learn from them on how to present clear content and then try to put my mark on it. The difference I want to bring is being more workshop hands on, and more in-depth about buying and selling process, attending the auctions and dealers.

Hi kieren, I have not been able to get it in the workshop since filming to fix up, other vehicles have jumped the line but its going in to be fixed this week, all being well I might be able to turn it around before xmas. I will let you know when I look to put it up for sale as not sure how far we will go with it yet and we need to do a part 2.

No part 2 even after a month ?
Hi max, part 2 on this will be landing in the new year, I did not manage to get it into the workshop due to the garage being so busy, I run a garage also bud and its just manic currently thanks to the covid mot extensions changing the whole mot dates meaning other things had to take priority so the bmw fell to the back of the line. It will be fixed and covered 👍👍

it was coming from the back veritas but your spot on that the do suffer with front suspension arm bush failure, i will be stripping it down in the new year and doing a part 2 on it. thanks for watching
