For those who don't know what is involved in making these videos... It's not just pick up a camera and shoot some video. The amount of planning and editing and trial and error no matter how good you are is tremendous. Therefore I want to say thank you to this gentleman once again. Thank you for making us smarter every day. I wish I would have learned about you many years ago.
This whole series of videos on the Mavic mini is just awesome! I am investigating the feasibility of making an auto charging dock using some copper sheets of metal to charge the battery in situ. Watching your videos gives me the confidence to think it may just be possible! Looking forward to watching hte rest of your videos!
@@ZollyD Yeah I think it's definitely possible the more I dig in! I ripped the drone open and wired up a line to the power button and all the battery terminals then I'm feeding them onto the back of the drone. On the back I'll have a LoRa radio arduino combo which runs off the the battery power in sleep mode waiting for a LoRa on signal, as well as a YX mavic mini charging unit. which gets 5V 2.4amp power fed from two of the drones legs. The charger hasn't arrived yet but looks to weigh like 10-20 grams and the arduino lora radio another 10 grams. So It should only add another 30 grams. The only part I'm still uncertain of is if can charge the battery BMS with the charger while it's in the drone or if it's going to complain. Based on the way the voltage works with the power button (starts at 8 V then drops to 0 when you press the button, then returns to 3.3V when the drone is on), I can't imagine it being an issue as it looks like the drone isn't communicating with the battery at all when it is turned off.

In my ignorance i do wonder whether it would be possible to a) monitor the voltage and direction of voltage on the LED and the time period to know when it turns solid red and allow that logic to act as a switch to replace the push button. b) For the purpose of disabling the return home on low battery, would it be possible to use a mofset to act as a switch and to sever the lines after the battery check process is complete?

I'm trying to get my hands on the Japanese MT1SS5 battery to meet USA specifications for meeting category 1 specifications for over car and persons flying. At this rate I'm wondering if modifying a gen 1 or 2 battery with smaller lighter weight cells would be cheaper. Could I replace the lion gen 1 batteries with smaller lipo or lion to shave off 50g of weight on the original battery circuit board?
Hey Zolly! Loving your ideas here and work done so far, I will go on to watch the other videos shortly also! A few questions... So, the Mini 2, I understand BOB will not work with this apparently? I am thinking out loud as I write this. BOB is a method to bypass/replace the "brains pcb" as you call it, I guess there must be something internal in the Mini 2 firmware that is not in the SE for BOB not to work? Ok, following on from that... there is talk about "locking the chip" by this I guess we mean the brains pcb locking? From what I gather this is done by the brains pcb losing all power? As an almost anti tamper device? Or am I missing something here? From what I understand in this video the power can be taken away from the brains and as long as the power is reapplied to the brains pcb BEFORE the brains gets connected to the drone then everything is good and the chip does not lock? Again is this possible with the Mini 2? I know you said you has bought one and made some progress with it, have you any links, videos, tutorials you can share for this as I am very interested in this :) Ok as for this video, I was thinking could this brains pcb not be internally mounted within the mini and wired off the back of the connector? From what I can think the issue is with the brains seeing the battery first and then plugging into the mini's connector 🤔 if that is the only reason could this be overcome? Amazing, Zolly! As I commented in a previous video, I would like to see the same process, but instead using non-solder 16850 cells that we can easily just slide into the drone's battery cavity then securely close the drone's battery door to lock them in place. BTW would it be possible to simply replace the original DJI circuit board with a DIY board? After all, it looks like you've already removed/replaced the original MOSFETS, etc. It seems this would be much easier to solder connections to. Thanks!
Yes and no. The thing is that the board has to be connected to the batteries first and only after can it be connected to the drone. So if the board is connected to the drone while you insert the batteries it will give an error.
I am curious about that too, so for sure I will put it on my "to do videos about" list. One thing is already clear, that the full charge on the Mini 2 is higher than 8.4V. That is something to be aware of...
hi Zoly,, i really like you and topics in your channel cuz im in the circle of electronic hobby too, but im not so good as you, i used to do audio video repairs for lliving before but not anymore.. but imy working bench for electronics hobby is never leave on my side,, and im in fying drone hobby ATM, and i got 3 Minis of DJI and numbers of cheap quadcopter toys before get into this far. hahaha,, aside hacxking of mavics Baterrys which verry interesting on me i have one more wanted diy PROJECT THAT IM REALLY want to achive is to do an amplifier for my mavics minis RC RX antenna. kind of i van ab;le to detach nthe dip[ole built in antenna of my RC then attach an external roof antennaa coax cable so i can have a nice seat inside house or inside my car while my minis enjoying flying everywhere, i get fulfilled more if i could make it with some circcuit hacking or pulling some RF circuit amplier just sitting round inside old appliancesa doing nothing but taking our space.. hahaHA CAN YOU NHELP ME BY DOING IT IN YOUR CHAnnel zolly?? @@ZollyD Thats great to hear, i have mini 2 and ordered mini 1 battery to mod it and use in mini 2, but then i have found out it have to be programmed for the controller to use more capacity(amps), some moders say it works fine just like that without reprogramming so i don't know who to trust. It is a bit rough but I can proudly tell that I have already flown it with the batteries I showed in this video. The microcontroller program has to be changed though! So your thinking is correct. You can build an amplified antenna rig. It basically consists of 2 2.4ghz wifi panel antennas, 2 signal amps, power source for amps, appropriate cables/adapters, mounting hardware, and a tripod. It would also involve opening up and some light modding of your controller to connect the antennas.
I am not making these for sale. If you want to by some crazy batteries look on RUclips for the user "The Longranger". Contact him! I know he is a good guy, and FOR SURE he has what you need! ;)

Good point! :) I charge them on a balance charger. I just stick a needle under the black plastic to access the balancing point. :) But they are not really going out of balance anyways.
no need to charge the balance all the time. after some time, need to balance to increase the life of the battery. zolly, what is the balanced charging circuit you are using?
I would love that. Unfortunately the output-weight ratio makes them not too good for this application. As I know the solar tech is just not yet there...

Yes, its possible. But chip reprogramming would be necessary to adjust cells capacity.

@@ZollyD The mini 1 in Japan uses a Lipo battery, Same specs as the mini 2 battery, only 1100 mah instead of 2250. That's why I think it will work.

what is the circuit you using.
The factory battery board with some added electronics. If you watch my playlist on the Mavic Mini it will be clear for you what is going on. ;)
I ordered the bms already unlocked from Pat to connect a lipo under 200 grams, for my mini 2, to do a test with my alientech duo 2.
