    I heard someone say Cory Wells was at the top of his game, here! I’m here to bear personal witness that Cory Wells was on the top of his game every day of his life!...in this, and every band he was in, and also in his solo career! And Danny and Chuck were also at the top of their game here. No better band than this, except maybe the Beatles, ever! Never will be again! These 3 talented men were all fabulous!♥️♥️♥️

    I was in the 8th grade in 1971. Had to take a music class, I am not musically, inclined. The music teacher said we had to get up in front of the class and sing a song. I loved Three Dog Night. I saved my money, went to People’s drug and bought their album and I sang Joy to the World. I think I did ok.

    Three Dog Night should have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame years ago. It's a disgrace that they induct rappers but leave great bands like Three Dog Night out. Another band Bread should have also been inducted.

      As I posted on another comment:
      Without a doubt. Supposedly, they aren't in the R&R Hall of Fame because they didn't write most of their own music. They did, however, write some, and more importantly, brought attention to many emerging songwriters like Harry Nilsson and Randy Newman. They also made a song their own when they recorded it (check out other versions of "Mama Told Me Not To Come", to see what I mean). And keep in mind Elvis, who is (deservedly) in many Halls of Fame NEVER WROTE A SINGLE SONG. Not one. So I call bullshit on that excuse for not including 3DN in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They helped define an era FFS.

      The naysayers use the "but they didn't write their own music" approach which is crap because most of the Motown acts in the R&R HOF didn't write their own music or play instruments either but because they were in 60s and supposedly "cool" they get inducted. The HOF definitely favors the 60's over the 70's and 80's for popular music artists. At least with the fan vote we are seeing some more acts inducted that should have been in a long time ago.

    I just watched an interview with Cory Wells from 2011. He said they put a halt to the band in 1975 because Danny and Chuck had fallen off the deep end due to drugs. This is probably one of the last concerts they did before that happened. How crazy that Cory was always the one that lead such a clean life and never did drugs, but then he was the first to go. 🫤 What a singer he was! He was always one of my favorites growing up. I loved to harmonize with him in the car. 😏

    This is an absolute masterpiece and triumph of mid 70s live production. From the singers and band performing with pretty much no monitors, to the complexity of what the keyboard player is adding to the sound using what must be some kind of mellotron, this is mind blowing.

  • @robertgillespie7946
    @robertgillespie7946 7 лет назад +151

    I'm sure the majority of people don't realize they don't have monitors. This means they can't quite hear what the others are singing. They are able to hear what's being played on the house speakers for the audience. This doesn't sound like a big deal but it is. To achieve the harmonies they do you must have perfect pitch and confidence in yourself and the other guys. This wasn't unusual for the time but what is, is the level of achievement they hit. Just a phenomenal band.

      While your assessment of the musicians in the band is spot on, this is a somewhat later version of the band. Jimmy Greenspoon is still in the group (in '75), but Joe Schermie and Floyd Sneed are already gone. Michael Allsup is gone at this point, but he does return later. There's also a second keyboardist in this lineup, Skip Konte. The guitarist in this video is probably James Smith, but could also possibly be Al Ciner, depending on when in '75 it was filmed. The bassist was probably Jack Ryland, but also could have been Dennis Belfield, again depending on the timing. The drummer in this video is Mickey McMeel.

      @@AlbertEinsteinSpock Ok Ok I get it. Point taken. So some comparisons don't bear close examination as in my Zep retort. You seem to me to be like me in alot of respects in that we both love Classic Music. I love Three Dog Night as I mentioned in my last post. I actually own their albums as opposed to the more popular Greatest Hits packages, so I have no ax to grind with TDN. Btw, that was not directed at you. I completely agree with you.

    Story about Chuck Negron's addiction is great read. Three Dog Nightmare. After 37 rehabs, he went to a cold turkey rehab place and within hours prayed for God to cure him or kill him. Went to sleep for nearly two days and realized he was cured when he awoke.

    Besides being so good looking, Chucks voice is just about perfect. It’s a shame he let those factors along with the drugs really ruin him . I loved Three Dog Night ! I would like to start a petition to get Three Dog Night into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame! Or if there already is one I'll sign it. I'd like to think that part of the recognition is having the original band members alive when they're inducted. I think I've heard getting in can't be sooner than 25yrs after a band starts. They should have been inducted during the 1990s! I can't figure this oversight out. Or whatever the reason might be.

      The main reason is they only wrote a handful of songs and none of those were hits. As great as 3DN is, they're really nothing more than a glorified cover band.

    • @Era515
      @Era515 8 лет назад +28

      They were far more than a cover band. They personally chose (often obscure) songs and re-arranged them, making them their own and turning them into major hits. The majority of the time their version was better than the original writer's arrangement and vocals. They also brought a lot of relatively unknown songwriters to the attention of the general public. There's quite a few songwriters out there who owe a lot to Three Dog Night.

    • @KirkSandall
      @KirkSandall 8 лет назад +6

      I know all of that and none of it matters. The definition of a cover band is a band that doesn't play or record original material. Period. Only 9% of their recorded material was original (if you don't count the EP at the end of their career, otherwise the percentage is lower); 91% were covers. Therefore, they are a cover band.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cover_band#Examples_of_cover_acts
      However, that doesn't take anything away from how good they were or how successful they were. I love TDN. I saw them 30some years ago when Chuck was still in the band and have read both his and Jimmy Greenspoon's autobiographies. At one time I owned all of their albums and I still listen to them occasionally.
      But they were still a cover band and that's why they'll probably never make it into the R&R HoF.

Chuck said it just about took his, and his wife's lives. He said they go so kooked on it they were high every waking minute of the day. Him getting kicked out of the band, and them going broke turned them around. I agree this was one hell of a band when they were together. I just listened to Chuck doing an interview last nite which I gotta say, shocked the hell out of me. All these years I thought maybe it was Corey that Didn't want TDN back together, when it was DANNY that emphatically said NO! And if that weren't enough it was because Danny felt he wld come in 3rd in the group again. It seems Danny felt by doing his Solos he was getting ALL the attention he needed, not to mention that he (Damny), and COREY, did Not get along and.. were Always fighting! (just an fyi that I never knew about Danny). Lastly, it's Always been talked about that Chuck was the Only One on Drugs, all while DANNY was too, but many only thought it was Chuck! So a Big Kudos to Chuck for coming out with his addiction, while Danny took No Blame at all! Again a big Kudos to Chuck, and to Corey.. may You Rest in Peace dear friend~ ❤
