"I was to do it" or "I was supposed to it" doesn't suggest that the speaker really did it; whereas, "I had to do it" implies that the action was actually done by the speaker, though out of obligation. Have / had (past tense) are also used to talk about things we own or possess / activities / experiences etc. E.g. I have a meeting to attend. / I had a break. Thus "I had chores TO DO" is not the same as "I HAD TO do chores". Hope this helps. 😊
