      Thanks! I have used it, but only in the closed position. Popping it open to conceal other strikes can be easily read after one or two times so I use it like a short stick.

      @@SifuKuttel Aweomse, that's cool as it's a weapon I haven't really seen people spar with. I managed to take advantage of that tactic of opening the fan to obscure the vision (2 times in fact), but probably cuz my opponent was a karateka and not that familiar with the use of fans, and it was a surprising setup. Definitely think it's most practical and easy to use when closed, though both ways can be effective at the right time :)

    I'm in my late fifties, and deal with arthritis in my back, and nerve damage down the right side of my body. I have studied various arts over the last 40+ years. I wish to know the basics of this art. Who should I seek in the Fort Worth, Texas area for instruction? And yes, I am out of shape.

    • @SifuKuttel
      @SifuKuttel  3 года назад +1

      Awesome! My sisook (kung fu uncle) has a school in Farmers Branch. He teaches the same style of Choy Li Fut and Tai Chi that I do and he also teaches Wing Chun. He's a great guy and his staff of instructors are awesome as well. You should check them out whitelionsofshaolin.com/
      And you don't have to be in peak condition to start, that's the beauty of martial arts, it's a journey of the self. You progress at your own pace, as long as you keep moving forward. Let me know if you end up joining over there, and tell them I say hello!

      That's a sign of bad generation trauma, childhood abuse or domestic abuse she endured for years without much help. She will live with this forever, its too ingrained into the subconscious and her view. Does she have panic attacks or goes fetal position whenever someone confronts and shouts at her, stranger or family? Maybe she's not in shape or has a obvious condition that made her a target for bullies? That's not a way to live life, in constant fear , because you let them win already. The world is a horrible place, but there's beauty in the horrors. Just have to learn to deal with it mentally. I've practice no religion ever(as it is a lifestyle, no gods, no rituals, just the art of not trying to change the nature of the world), was just Taoism. This is because it the only thing I could ever take seriously(Zen Buddhism as well but that was a requirement). In Taoism the world needs both good and evil. Without the evils of the world to witness or talk about, no-one would know of the dangers and will most likely die young. There cant be less good, or else no one would know what kindness or justice looks and feels like. Go and tell her this. It may not sink at first but keep throwing it around lightly every month or so and it'll click with her than. Stay as patient into the future as you sound now, please. You need to stand tall on your own foundation. Same with a confrontation turned fight. You can ignore, but sometimes you aren't given a choice to walk off from the attacker, so in turn this is why its called self defense. Its way too risky to even promote the first attack because its better to be the one moving second to counter, block or dodge. If she says what if they have a knife or a gun, say you should have those on you anyways.

    Do you believe this yourself? I mean, seriously?

    • @SifuKuttel
      @SifuKuttel  4 года назад +2

      Hi jpsholland, this is a section out of a form. Like I said in the beginning of the video, it's a very flashy combination because it has the open fan, and jump, and spinning part.... and really that's all it is. A fan is only practical when it's closed, then it can be used like a short stick for striking. Fans like this were more common in everyday life quite a while back, so learning how to use it for self defense was more practical as it could be used if you had nothing else on hand. Open fan techniques are the artistic side, but just like spinning swords or nunchucks, people like to play and get fancy with the weapon once they get comfortable with the basics. I personally don't prefer open techniques, and I usually take the time to talk about it when I show movements like this in other videos, often telling my bias for closed fan, but everyone likes the cool looking stuff so that's why I put this particular section in the video. I'm not sure why you were looking up kung fu fan videos but hopefully you had a chance to try it and see how intricate the movements can be when you apply striking power to them, even if it is an open fan. If you haven't yet, give it a shot. Have fun!
