I bought the CD the day it was released. Instead of listening to it in my truck, I went home and put on the stereo. I listened to this song several times and each time I noticed something different. There’s so much going on with the lyrics, the background sounds, the instruments, the pace, the intensity. To this day I still feel the same way. Brilliant writing, arranging and producing.
The lyrics of this song are probably the most indicative of Axls state of mind back then. It's all there. Sadness, Anger, Vulnerability, Rage, Sorrow, Regret, Self Pity, Fuck everyone and everything, Insight and ignorance, intelligence, stuborness, and and all conuming self belief and doubt, all at the same time.... in a 10 minute song.
You made a good point about singing this song, it's really hard to song it live. In his prime(for me his prime is his all life anyway, that's how much i like him), Axl didn't handled it so well and he would run out of breath in the last part. It's almost insane to song this live, as well as You Could Be Mine. As strange as it seems Axl deals with coma much better now when he sings it live.
I was blessed enough to see that tour. Saw it at 3 rivers stadium in Pittsburgh! Faith no more opened. GNR and Metallica both did full sets. It was a 9hr concert. Worth every minute! 🔥🤘💜

Well, Sept in Massachusetts can be cold and rainy.. and it was. Faith No More and Metallica put on a great show, but there was a 90+ minute delay while they changed the stage for GN'R, and the crowd got very restless, and started throwing stuff. I saw a little kid get hit in the head with a heavy souvenir cup twice, and I got hit in the hand as I tried to cover my head. The only thing that stopped the crowd was they started showing female audience members flashing on the big screen, so that stopped the stuff flying through the air cuz people were distracted by boobs. GN'R wasn't as good as I had seen them before.. Axl seemed mad, and got even madder when someone threw a glass bottle that smashed on his piano during November Rain. He sang the rest of it sitting down on the stage. They did play a very angry version of Out to Get Me though, that was cool.
This song was my first introduction to guns n roses, and music in general, my dad chose this song to show me when I was tiny and honestly was the best decision. Its in my top 5 songs of all time, such an epic song
