very good tip about using the headlights to indicate a solid connection. The reason for making the final connection away from the battery is a precaution against battery sparking/arcing, correct?

I have the top of the line midtronic's battery analyzers. To check out the complete charging system, including the alternator, starter and battery. They're not cheap, but they give consistent and accurate numbers.

When your hooking up the cables BOTH VEHICLES SHOULD BE OFF, once connected start the donor car first then start the dead car!

First you connect jumper cables on dead car, positive lead first so you lower risk of shorting out on body of live car never hook up live car first.
