    Thank you for this content, I am really finding it very useful. Keep up the great work. My situation is similar. I live in Trinidad & Tobago in the Caribbean and most people here don't feel the need to learn another language. Then there was civil unrest in Venezuala and now we have a very large work force of Venezuelan migrants. Almost all my workers are Venezuelan, so now I'm very happy I started learning spanish.

    Hello Erica, I’ve tried to learn Spanish since high school and I love the language and different cultures. However, I can honestly say that I always hit a wall and I recognize my inconsistency is my issue. I had Rosetta Stone, Duolingo but my favorite thing to do is simply talking to Spanish speakers. I am going to give learning Spanish a sincere effort… I got here by one of your other videos so I will start here. Thank you for the time and effort you put into providing content! 👍🏾

    First time viewer here! I've had some exposure to Spanish in high school but I'm excited to get through this series & finally began taking learning more seriously! I did want to get some clarification/your opinion on utilizing subtitles while watching TV.. I understand what you said about recognizing the body language when watching TV so the subtitles can be distracting but what do you believe is the best way to learn Spanish through TV? Watching familiar English shows with Spanish subtitles or vice versa? I assume both could be useful, however I can relate most to not always being aware of where the speech starts/stops & being "shy" to speak Spanish out loud. Thank you so much for making this video, I've been inspired!

    • @EricaRayLanguage
      @EricaRayLanguage  4 года назад +9

      Hello and welcome! Thank you for your comments and excellent question.
      These are my recommendations for subtitles. Sorry it's long. I like to be thorough. Lol! :)
      1. Use English subtitles only if you’re watching something that you’re not already familiar with and you want to understand the plot. Just know that you’re not actually doing any language-learning during this time. It’s simply to prepare you to then go back from the beginning and rewatch without any English subtitles. This is because using English subtitles while watching in Spanish won’t help your Spanish much at all. You’ll simply be reading the English, and not actually listening to the Spanish, because the brain finds it easier. An alternative would be beginning with something that you already know well because you have watched it in English previously. In this case, you can skip this step.
      2. Now that you know the plot, I suggest watching the episode with NO subtitles and simply listening to the Spanish. It’s important to relax while doing this and not panic over what you can’t understand - even if that’s 90%. You’ll be getting your ear accustomed to the language with no distractions from reading and you will even learn some new vocabulary as you watch the screen.
      3. Watch with the SPANISH subtitles and listen and read at the same time. (Note that you can only do this step when the subtitles correspond to the spoken word. If the movie has been dubbed into Spanish, then often the Spanish subtitles will be different than the spoken Spanish and that will be confusing. So you may have to stop with Step 2. I recommend finding original Spanish shows for this reason)
      By listening and reading, you’ll learn to distinguish the words from one another and you’ll learn even more vocabulary. And of course, you’ll be seeing how things are written and pronounced which will improve your reading skills. You’re essentially working on different skills than what you did in Step 2, when you were focused on training your ear.

      There’s no need to watch something 2-3 times in one day if you don’t want to (lol!) But this is an excellent activity to do with the same episode over multiple days. And also, if at any time, you want to only do step 3, that's perfectly fine. You’re still working on excellent skills. I simply recommend this order because listening comprehension often ends up being the area where students begin to lack. This can happen when we become completely dependent on subtitles.
      Hope that helps! I’m going to do an entire video on this so make sure you've hit the notification bell to be notified! :)

    Rarely do I find a channel and think “okay I’m just gonna start from the first video and watch them all.” I’m definitely going to watch my favorite movies but with the Spanish dub over it. Should have thought of this already. Sounds like it could be more helpful than just using Spanish subtitles???

If I had transcript then I could have tried dictation, that's a great way but no transcript means no way for me to check. • @EricaRayLanguage
      @EricaRayLanguage  4 года назад

      @@rasmusa9212 :( It has nothing to do with you, nor with your abilities. Developing listening skills when you don't have access to written materials as well is a difficult thing to do on your own and something that I personally would not attempt. You are also likely listening to material that is too far above your level. Look for materials at a lower register and I would also suggest a tutor, at least to help you learn to read in your target language (assuming that you can find written materials, even if there is no audio to go with them). Once you can read independently your vocabulary will grow and that will help your comprehension. But you will still need to actively listen to audio at a level only a bit above yours. You want to be able to understand at least 70% of what you're hearing.

      Isn't it funny that whenever I try to deliberately do something I fail miserably. For mt first foreign language I tried to do things to deliberately improve my listening comprehension, I failed miserably, then as time passes somehow I begun to understand, and now I pretty much listen to videos on youtube at 2x or 3x speed and understand without any difficulty, then the same happened with Estonian but not to the same degree, listening to Estonian at 1.5x speed is already a stretch, now I am again failing miserably with Danish and Icelandic. :( I don't know it seems like I am the worst learner ever :(

      @@rasmusa9212 Well that's wonderful! Why do you feel discouraged? It sounds like all you need is time, patience, and to stop stressing. Stress literally blocks our ability to learn. It sounds like once you relax and enjoy the process you begin to see great results.

      @@mlmiller2267 That's great! Gradually increase the difficulty of what you're listening to and try to find material that comes with transcripts or captions so that you can check the text when you're not understanding. But I always recommend just listening first, several times until you've extracted all of the "juice" from the audio that you can by yourself. And then use the text just to fill in the gaps of what you didn't understand. Over time, filling in those gaps with the text and even trying to do little transcriptions yourself should start to help your listening comprehension improve.

    Everyone should learn based on their learning style. For example, for me listening to music, TV shows, etc. Has never helped me at all. It actually made me frustrated. I learned better with flash cards, listening to the English explanations and then practicing. Also children's TV shows or cartoons are more helpful starting out than adult shows in my opinion. Then just practice with native speakers. I think people do too many things not based on how they learn best. I can't watch things and not understand what is being said nor listen. It frustrates the hell out of me so I figured out what work for me. Now I am fluent in three languages doing less of the stuff I know doesn't work for me and more of what does. I never understand how people learn and do not even understand what is being said. I willl never get that- I need to go heavy input with vocab and get a strong base of words. Not heavy of words I can't spell, understand or comprehend. That IMO slows down your learning. Start with kiddie books and heavy input - then do more immersion later. You will make faster progress.

    • @EricaRayLanguage
      @EricaRayLanguage  3 года назад

      Definitely everyone must follow their learning style and preferences for materials! For example, I don't much enjoy learning through a lot of children's stories (unless my children are actually with me, also enjoying the story). They're not the most engaging to me and I often find the vocabulary a bit irrelevant to what I need. I prefer simplified stories for adult learners. And yet others, such as yourself, enjoy learning through children's stories! Thank goodness there's something out there for all of us!
