- Welcome, welcome! New to Dragon Age and overwhelmed? Well I'm here to help! Today, we are talking about what all you should do before starting Dragon Age: The Veilguard!

--- BUYING THE COMICS
I don't know why, but there are a bunch of different ways and collections to buy the comics. While you can buy them individually on various apps or collected into groups by run, if you want to buy a collection of them all, here is a quick guide:
- "DRAGON AGE: THE FIRST FIVE GRAPHIC NOVELS": ( a.co/d/06qezK5w ) For some reason, this collection splits up the newer comics, but includes all of the 'older' comics (Minus IDW comics- this is a blessing). If you want to read the Gaider comics and what a physical copy, this is the best collection that is currently widely available.
- "DRAGON AGE OMNIBUS": ( a.co/d/05Y3X1T8 ) This is ONLY the Gaider comics, collected into one. Best deal for this run if you don't want the newer comics and want a digital copy.
- "DRAGON AGE LIBRARY EDITION V1": ( a.co/d/0dWFN2cT ) Also ONLY the Gaider comics, however this edition includes extras, like in progress drawings and a running writer/artist commentary in the margins. Hard to find, no digital copy. Best bet on this one is ebay or a used book store.
- "DRAGON AGE: WRAITHS OF TEVINTER": ( a.co/d/05bauGtQ ) The second half of the newer comics that were cut off in 'THE FIRST FIVE GRAPHIC NOVELS'. If you want a physical copy of the newer comics, you will need to get both of these editions. This is also the only collection of all the new comics, unless you want to buy each run separately.
- "DRAGON AGE LIBRARY EDITION V2": ( a.co/d/0cfB06gU ) Similar to the other LIBRARY EDITION V1, V2 is the first half of the newer comics (aka the ones not included in the WRAITHS OF TEVINTER collection) and include exclusive drawings and creator notes in the margins. Also no longer in print, and best found on ebay or a used book store.
If you are looking for THE MISSING, it is not included in ANY of these yet, but does have its own collection: a.co/d/0bCgCtfI
If you are looking for DRAGON AGE released by IDW (aka 'The IDW comics'), it never had a collection. If you want a physical copy for some unholy reason, I've only ever found it on ebay for a stupid amount of money.

It's only now after posting that I forgot one of the novels for DA. HARD IN HIGHTOWN is a mini novel that is a slightly expanded version of an in-lore novel/codex entry. That could probably be found in your library, but its more of a cute coffee table book than anything important.
Also, to those asking why I didn't include the newer Netflix show, Dragon Age: Absolution: While a cute little show, there is no way that ties into Veilguard in a major way. Maybe there is a codex entry, but after listening to the interviews, the show sounded like it tried to tell a standalone story and be its own spin-off. They said they don't know if they would get a season 2 and left it on a major cliffhanger. You don't do that shit if it was important to the game. So, it doesn't make the list.
Erm... Ghil or Caitie, another of the RUclipsrs covering Dragon Age with a passion equal to yours is Jackdaw even if he doesn't cover the lore and such.

And this is such a wonderful summary of all the things to partake of! I do love reading - but I like to have my book series be book series and game series be game series (Ikr, crazy) so I missed all the reading material going into Inquisition and honestly, some of the things happening there were actually hard to understand and were missing context and character introduction because they had been in written media so I feel like now I actually have to read to not be surprised by that next time. Thank you a ton for this summary!
Most of my friends are taking that lazy approach, bless them. It mostly means I have to answer questions asked in the middle of the night about a specific lore aspect that they found interesting after I explained the world when they saw the gameplay trailer, lmao. I love them, bless them. Tho, I did send the more interested ones your way, hopefully it means a lil boost in subs since I do love your work, lol.
I also got three to try Inquisition! Didn't quite manage the swing for Origins, mostly because they saw the tactics menu the one time and decided to nope out - king behaviour tbh, completely understandable.

Presumably because it’s unfortunately not really that relevant to the series at large. I’d argue Anders is the only important-to-the-series part, but by DA2 he’s got very different personality and sums up his background pretty well.
Yeah over Witch Hunt? All because of Morrigan? The dlc and Eluvian is seemingly mentioned once in Inquisition during conversation with Morrigan. But Hawkes relationship with Anders frames his position in Inquisition. Maybe I'm crazy.
@@alexraffeo3629 Awakening is the end to the Warden Commander's storyline which, given that Grey Wardens are a playable faction in the new game, might put into perspective how Grey Wardens operate.
@@ComradeCaspera bit of morrigan- but its the last adventure with the warden and sets up where they are during all this time. Also has a neat little scene with ancient elven and dwarves cooperating- seeing as how we seem to be getting a lot of ancient elven stuff- it made the list.
@GhilDirthalen I can see it - But I love Awakening and will always be a must play in my eyes, sets up the Architect and *hints* essentially at the Darkspawn Magisters being the main villain(s) of Inquisition.
Without Archy we wouldn't have Cory, is how I see it. I can agree with the ancient Elves playing a big part.
Also note that the steam summer sale is happening and the dragon age series is like 1-4$ for each game. Very cheap right now to pick up and play.

but i have one question - why no Missing in Ideal track? isn't it a direct prequel to Veilguard?
So yes it is! But it kinda sucks and frankly Tevinter Nights and the ending of DAI does a better job at setting up what it tries to do. So I feel like there just isn't a need for it if you read TN.

Random tidbit I thought you’d be interested in- there’s a small team that’s been working on a Dragon Age mod for the game Crusader Kings III.
I don’t think the game itself is something you’d be interested in, but the mod is being worked on still and it’s going to start in 2:05 Divine :)

Okay so properly commenting now that I’m done fighting with my computer 🎉 (and winning like the tech savvy millennial my parents think I am lmao) firstly, I love that you are a big account and are fostering a culture of no gatekeeping! Too many fandoms I feel like can be hard to join because fans become like… idk church people who don’t want new people in their church. 😂 if you get that vibe. Just, cliquey. Not that DA fandom doesn’t have issues as someone who’s been here off and on since 2015 but like I’m appreciating how the culture on RUclips seems a lot better than tumblr was in about 2015.
Also can confirm DA wiki is good for lore-that’s were I looked up lore in 2015 when I was getting into the series. It actually does a pretty good job. Not to mention telling you stuff like how to gain companion approval etc.

No Awakening on the ideal track? I always thought the reason Anders and Justice weren't just new characters was because this way you can see what they were like before they changed each other and know that Justice really was a spirit. With a new guy I'd have assumed he'd been tricked by a demon. Plus it introduces us to the Architect, and I felt revealing how much agency darkspawn usually have over their own actions was significant, making them not the faceless army to kill guilt free they once were.
Xbox Series X/S consoles are the best place to play the games. All of the content is available via backward compatibility, they are included with a Game Pass subscription via EA Play, they have enhancements like fps boost and auto HDR, and they don’t have any major issues like the PC version.
Love your videos ghil dirthalan ❤ I beat dragon age Inquisition years ago when I was like 20 but I barely remember the whole story so I just bought all the DLCs and I'm going to complete it 100 percent and get the whole story it takes so long to do the table missions though by the time a long one is done the weekend is over lol I'll always love dragon age though I guess I kinda grew up on it 😄😄
What I have been doing is replaying the games and using youtube to go over the tie in media.

Me: I played the games so I should be pretty good right? Oh. Oh... (sees big long list) Oh, no.
I actually had some difficulty playing the DLC's back when they released. Some of it was choice, and some of it was the versions I got. But I felt Varric was excellent at recapping the stuff that went on with big bad Corry. I still haven't played witchhunt... Playing a martyr makes those DLC feel like a fever dream. Been switching between my desktop and laptop and without cloud saves it's making replaying the game difficult.
But yeah, I've never experienced a moment where I felt out of the loop in a way that hindered my enjoyment. Definitely the benefits of having a new character each entry.
I might try some of the books or short stories later.

Nah- i honestly dont know. I just think it helps set up dwarf lore and witch hunt, which reuses the map 🫡 If i knew shale was back i would have added in Asunder.
Id say 1 alternative route, is to just enjoy all the games and dlc if you want to play games, then read the synophsis of the different novels on the wiki. and honorable mention for the dragon age lorecast.
And Caties podcast with Jordan from the exalted march: split the veil.
She would probably die rather than recommending her won podcast, so I will. They have made episodes about different topics in both dragon age and mass effect since the time of inquisition.

Will there be recaps of the other games in this series? My best friend is finally getting into DA but has to start with Inquisition since he’s on PS5 and the other two games aren’t backwards compatible on there.
I know Inquisition is a fine place to start but a lot of that game is based around paying off things that are set up in Origins and 2 and I worry that the lack of context will leave him confused/won’t hit as hard.
Also, he knows that BioWare games can get some people uh let’s say “heated” online and he would prefer to watch someone that isn’t gonna do that.
If not, that’s okay I’ll just guide him through the Keep or something lol

I am a huge Dragon Age fan since 2010/2011. I have read all of the books, comics and even watched both the computer animated movie and the Netflix animated show.
I might have read the IDW Dragon Age comic, and I still found that story problematic back then due to most of the characters being unlikeable, the mean spirited tone, the inconsistency with the art style and don’t forget a lot of stuff that doesn’t respect the source material at all such as Gregor being the beta version of Meredith, the timeline of where this takes place in the Dragon Age world and how healing magic has the ability to grow back a severed limb.
My favorite book is either the Stolen Throne or Asunder. My favorite comic book story arcs are either the Alistair one, the Knight Errand, the Blue Wraith and Dark Fortress.
I wonder if there will be a Dragon Age manga series sometime in the future that goes over the First Four Blights as well as the Fall of the Dales and the Arrival of the Qunari.

This isn’t directed at Caitie, but this seems like a good place to mention this seeing as we’re talking about revisiting DA media.
I got DAO and DA2 in that recent steam sale. DAO is working fine, but DA2 requires that EA launcher and it won’t let me log in? It keeps telling me that something went wrong and to try again later.
EDIT: I fixed it myself 🔨 💪🏻
Unfortunately i cant help- but ive heard SO many issues stemming from the EA app. Even people who bought it off EA are having trouble playing. :(
@@GhilDirthalenEA is so cursed. Anyway, after more digging online I found a fix apparently by using the EA app recovery feature and that fixed it! 🎉
@@GhilDirthalenAfter some tinkering, it’s fixed!! 🎉🎉🎉 There was some EA app recovery feature that got it working-can’t believe it’s so busted they have to give you a fix when you download the app. 😂 That’s so awful. Ah, man, EA. I will be glad to be back to playing on console for Veilguard. ❤

I love Awakening. I hope Veilguard does something like bring back the Architect or awakened darkspawn so that more people could go back and experience it.
To this day it is still one of my favorite DLC of any game ever.
Edit: the bug in silverite mine is infuriating though.
0:12 "in preparation for the dragon age veilguard" I love how we have all collectively chosen to ignore the "the" in Dragon Age *THE* veilguard 😂 I still do not like the new name...😢
I would also add that the Gaider Comics can be skipped as it follows Bioware's canon and can conflict with choices you might make in game.
Also, there is only a one off line that references it.

DLC - Stone Prisoner & Witch Hunt.
DA2
DLC- Legacy ( i like to play it in act 3, but that is personal preference)
Books:
Asunder
Masked Empire
Inquisition
DLC- Decent & Trespasser (after main story)
Books - Tavinter Knights (especially the stories- Among the dead men, Callback, On the Streets of Mintathus, The Wig maker job and Dread Wolf take you.)
Then the short stories.
