It was really helpful for Bari to describe a definition of Anti-Semitism; people throw around the term all the time but she actually but some meat on the bones of what that phrase actually entails in modern society. She's really intelligent and doesn't fit neatly into the "right/left" paradigm. I wonder if they would have fired her at the NYT if she didn't resign. Thanks for the informative interview, Margaret!

I found her book to be conceptually all over the place, a rushed mess. If I was a high school teacher and she turned in that book I wouldn't even give it a passing grade. At times it was also just misleading. In chapter 3 she wrote "For the second time in American history, Jews were shot dead as they prayed in synagogue, this time in Poway California".
That's "Jews" as in plural, more than one. 1 Jewish worshipper was shot and killed that day while several others were injured. But read it again "For the second time in American history, *Jews* were shot dead as they prayed in synagogue, this time in Poway California". It clearly gives the impression that there were multiple deaths. How this passed the editorial stage without being amended is beyond me.
She also talks about other bigoted attacks (against Sikhs, Muslims, blacks and others) in a way that is supposed to create a narrative of America suddenly becoming a dangerous place for Jewish people? Non-Jewish victims, including the 50 Muslims of the Christchurch massacre, are morbidly paraded in front of the reader as proof that "It was clear after the Poway attack that Jews, never mind everyone else living in a divided nation awash in weapons owned by people who could radicalize themselves in front of computer screens, had reason to be afraid in America".
I'm pretty sure blacks and Native Americans were already pretty scared about living in America for hundreds of years before the Poway shooting. This book demonstrates the myopic, sheltered world view of this immature young woman.

It would be good to know what the poverty rate is amongst Jewish Americans, or higher education levels, or wealth, or prison rates vs other groups. Resilience and creativity don't mean a group isn't historically oppressed, nor not a minority. It's impressive that people like Elie Wiesel and Viktor Frankl were sufficiently resilient, creative and free of bitterness to move on with their lives after facing horrific enslavement and oppression, build successful careers in their fields, and focus on helping others and the world rather than remaining mired in self-pity. But that doesn't negate the fact that they were oppressed, and in the most egregious of ways.

I love Bari Weiss. I support her on Substack, and I think she's an essential journalist and leader in a profession desperately in need of professionalism. But for a person who strongly believes in generous interpretations of what people say, she's awfully quick to jump on the vague accusation that Trump has debased political discourse and therefore is tacitly supporting anti-Semitism. That's quite a leap. Yes, Trump is narcissistic, impulsive, spiteful and even childish. But I try to to look beyond his rhetoric and give credit for what he has done. And his actions have consistently supported the Jewish people and Israel, despite massive political resistance. That should get more weight than Bari gives it.

Anti-semituism? The relentless use of this term, as if it indicated knowledge and sophistication is puzzling. Did anybody in the Pittsburgh shooting hear "All these Semites need to die?" Any German Jew ever hear "Accursed Semites?" "Dirty Semites?" 'Anybody ever heard Arab muslims chant their relentless "Khaybar Kkaybar hey, Semites?" Of course not! Then, why, why on earth are intelligent people still attached to and keep circulating that idiotic, misguiding and tragic Arian-Semitic Race Theory (ASRT) terminology?
Where there is anti-Jew hate, bigotry, scape-coating, (envy, maybe?) and violence, no doubt, it should be addressed swiftly, directly and simply without the dubious reference to "Semitism." Indeed, like 350M Semitic Arabs and, unlike 100M Semitic Ethiopians (who are Black), many of the mere 15M multi-racial, multi-ethnic Semitic Jews are NOT a race, but a People. Ironically, about 50% of Jews don't even speak their Semitic language, Hebrew. Why? That's right, because of Anti-Jew hate, bigotry and violence. In short, the term "Anti-Semitism" needs to be deleted from daily usage ASAP and reserved to the history archives of WWII.
Also puzzling, to me, why should anyone be ashamed or proud of their identity? Comfortably aware (not Comfortably Numb) is all it should take to develop self-esteem and get along with others.
BTW, shouldn't Trump "embrace" of White Supremacists be mentioned without forgetting Obama's picture opps with the "delightful" duo Farakkan and Jeremaia Wright? And shouldn't the Arab-Israeli conflict be mentioned along with its underlying religious problem--the attachment of Ultra-Orthodox Jews to their biblical historic homeland and the attachment of Arab Muslims to the dogmatic Holy-Hate, love of death and Honor violence?
And shouldn't the hateful Congress woman from MN (who violates the 1st Amendment of the US constitution by admimiding to being "Proud" to market her religion) be mentioned with a fellow ex-refugee, Ayaan Hirsi Ali and her insightful, urgent book, "Prey?" Omaran is in Congress not to legislate, but to agitate against the Jewish State and normalize Sharia law. Towards that, she's learned to recite some "progressive" sounding phrases.

Jews make up about 3% of the U.S. population. By definition Jews are a minority. There are far fewer Jews in the the U.S. than blacks, and blacks are a minority. Also, Jews are an ethno-religious group, not a religious group. For any Jew that didn't convert, Jewish identity is not based on religion, it is based on parentage. If you were born to a Jewish mother you are a Jew, by Jewish law. This is how you get many Jews who are atheists, this is how you get Jews who not only don't practice Judaism they are practice a different religion. Also, any Jew that didn't convert isn't white. Countless DNA studies on Ashkenazi Jews show that they are a mix of European and Mideastern, so by definition Ashkenazi Jews aren't white.
