  • First off, I would like to thank Joe Pieczynski for letting me copy his Shop Clock. Joe has an awesome RUclips Channel. I've put the link below for you to check out. He runs a machine shop in Texas, and has all kinds of tips ,tricks and advice on the proper way of machining.
I also want to give a big congratulations to my shop teacher, Louis, who has recently retired. Louis has done a great job running the machine shop program at a local Junior College. I thought that making him this shop clock would be a nice, well deserved, retirement gift.
When I emailed Joe to ask him if it was ok to make the clock and film it, he said sure you can but I have no plans for the clock. After thinking about it for a while I came up with a plan. I decided to take measurements from an original size Dial Indicator and then put it into Solidworks and make a drawing of each part. Then, after I had them all drawn up, I scaled it up 10x's. This gave me a clock that was about 24" long which made it a good size for a shop clock and the right size for the clock I bought (link below). Now I had all the drawings and dimensions on paper. I was ready to head to the shop to start the build.
I used MDF for the body and a few parts for the arm assembly, and wood for the rest, including the pin. I made all of the parts for the arm on the lathe, except for the ball I bought (link below) on Amazon. While I was making those parts I was thinking of a way to make it look like metal and not painted wood. So, I did an experiment in which I covered them with Starbond CA glue (link below with a coupon code -10% off) before I painted them, which gave them a nice coat of a very smooth finish to be painted and it worked out great!!
Now that all parts were made and painted it was time to glue and clamp this thing together.
Follow along with the video and use the Part Dimension Drawings (link below) to make one for your shop or as a gift for a friend and their shop.
    Be safe and have fun.

Looking good. 😊 Check mine as well. It's a exactly 8:1 scale model of a Mahr indicator. The number in the clock are 3d printed to match the real one. Of course also inspired by the great Joe 😊💪
