In this video I react to Finnish comedian Leikola Ismo and his comedy sketch called the Word Ass when he looks at interesting quirks of the English language

My favourite thing about Finnish language is our "equivalent" of "Fits like a glove". We say "Sopii kuin nyrkki silmään" which translates to "Fits like a fist in the eye" :D
Funnily in German our equivalent of that includes the ass "Passt wie Arsch auf Eimer" literally translates to "Fits like ass on bucket".
There's also "mennee ku isä äitiin"

His quirky demeanour is so funny to watch
Ismo is a master on playing with words. Both in Finnish and English.
He's very good at "composing" his sets. The way it starts slow and simple and then escalates little by little
Ismo is fantASStic.
Ismo is also great in that his humor is very similar in both english and finnish. He is great at playing with words and making observations about the world around him and always without offending anyone

I think Ismo and Dave Chappelle are my favourite comedians. You have to be really good at the language to be able to do the comedy Ismo does. He has studied physics at the University of Jyväskylä, so he is probably quite smart.
He have probably studied many comedians also. I had to explain to relatives last week, how stand up comedians almost never have "unscripted" moments. Every pause, and "nervous" behaviour is added for extra comedy. Have you noticed that he often use the "rule of three" ? Many times, he say the punchline twice more, but phrased with other words ? Brilliant.
In the beginning when Ismo says that ass is just something you add to another word with no meaning it's kinda like the thing when he is talking about silent letters: They're unnecessary".
I don't know about finnish, but in danish the word for "married" and "poison" is the exact same word.

Love language comedy.
In Swedish we tend to use the word “skit” as a strengthening word almost like the English ass. In English it means shit. Like the movie was “skitbra” which means that it was really good. Skitful = really ugly, skitgod = really tasty, skitdyr = really expensive, skitsnygg = really handsome or good looking and so on.
Fun thing is that in Denmark I heard a police officer say that it was “pisse gott” (piss good) which in my ears sounds disgusting but in danish it is the same meaning as the Swedish “skitbra”.
In Finnish we use "vittu" in the same way. It is the same word as your "fitta" ;)
Sa basically for you Swedes it's:
skitbra = bra
skitful = ful
skitgod = god
skitdyr = dyr
skitsnygg = snygg

Nice seeing the better version of this getting reactions! The shorter version is what made him viral originally (in english speaking world), but this one he had time to refine more, adding the last part about body parts for example.
He studied English in Helsinki University, do not know till the Masters.😁
@@petrusinvictus3603 You got a source in that? Because I'm quite sure he only ever studied Physics in Jyväskylä, and dropped it just before finishing Bachelor's degree. University of Jyväskylä standup nights in Ilokivi was where he was first time introduced to stand-up too, and also where he first time also performed after seeing others flop and being sure he could do better.

There are many aspects to this word
Ismo's genius is similar to Columbo's, you think he's a harmless guy... but he drags you like a liter measure, or a donkey on a string and in the end surprises you because you didn't expect him to be smarter than you all along.
Ismo has the title words funniest guy. We both come from Jyväskylä, Finland.
The part I enjoy about Ismo's act is that he points out the same things I've been thinking for years if not decades. I'm perhaps particularly analytic about languages in general, always been fascinated about the possibilities of constructing multiple meanings in single expressions and somewhat misleading people with words that are appropriate yet mean a different thing. So it's rather comforting for me to know that other people also think about these things and notice them.
A Bit of Fry and Laurie did quasi this joke back in the 90's about Americans using the word ass for everything.

Hahaa, "straight" translations are also great :D From English to Finnish and then back to English, nice comedy comes out of those... after 20 beers ;)

Word "a**" is comically translated from Ismo's comedey "nonniin". Same concept but funny tho. 🤣

In the school the learning of a language were pretty straight forward and much easier than this. He's like a proffessor in language or a dictionary, ask him and he'll explain it to you in ways you never thought of. A real english proffessor would scratch his head and ask, What the heck is he talking about?

Sore, English is no language that is hard to learn, it simply has so few mensons for different meaning aka Finnougrik-languages
Love your videos, Actually in Finland they/I use theword "vittu" (pussy/vagina) in even more complex ways, eg: Voi vittujen vittuun vittu. Then you have all the same pronounce as(s) in english, like look at that "vittuun"(damn) guy. Moreover is: that guy "vittutaa" (bothers) me. Ask me for even more examles, can´t be botherd writing it all her. cheers and thanks!
