- Here we are! The War that started them all! The first ever Heat of the first ever War. Jeremy Clarkson presents, Johnathon Pearce commentates and Philippa Forrester interviews the teams.
The first six combatants are Roadblock, Killertron, Nemesis, Shogun, Grunt and Barry.
LET THE WARS BEGIN!
BBC 1998 All Rights Reserved.
Gonna Binge watch, who's with me?
Yeah, let's fucking do it man
im down
Hell fucking yes.
Aaron Guldenpfennig im in
I love how enfusiastic everybody is! And honestly i'm with them!
I'm actually a fan of Clarkson (on-screen anyway, separating art from the artist here) but I will admit his style does not suit a programme like this at all. Craig Charles was much better suited to this.
Clarkson could still be funny
Craig Charles has way more personality
bloody hell Phillipa just walking through the gauntlet with no fear yeah f health and safety lol
I'll always remeber the first time i saw this Magnicecent show, My mum put BBC1 on, this had just started, i was Saying "Oh, Do we have to watch this" and by the time it reached the heat final i was shouting "Thats It, Go On, SHOW EM WHAT YOU'VE GOT" I F**king Loved this Show
I used to love this show when I was in my early teens, basking in the nostalgia.
Barry was 115 kg.
Just imagine how much different Robot Wars could've been if Barry won this thing: Weight limits would probably be through the roof.
This is what I was looking for. It was broadcast in the Netherlands and have such nostalgia for it (I knew BattleBots wasn't it!)
Craig Charles let himself go
Interesting thought, this:
This was the first heat, right?
Road Block was the first robot to be introduced in this heat, the first one to run the Gauntlet, and the first one through to the six-way melee grand final at the end of Heat F...
And he ended up winning the Final!
Talk about first come, first served!
Well shit, there goes my evening.
I need start a Robot Wars Marathon more often.
here's a playlist to help: /playlist?list=PL_XFrkTflUWbZtjkcoffTsdbAbdLKVJ9F
@Steve47324 Barry wasn't a stock robot, it was a legit competitor, and the team were annoyed that Grunt went through and commited suicide in the Sumo as Barry was basically designed for the event.
i used to love this show
Jeremy Clarkson as host be like: “And I…. Was the first to arrive”
The fire! The fire! Why me!
Calm down Diotoir it's just your predecessor Nemesis but i would agree about the fire
OHHHH my god JEREMY! I thought it was Craig Charles. Well thanks for alerting me to your channel. I love Robot Wars.
craig charles made this show
+Mike Newbold 3,2,1 accchhhtttiivate
+Mike Newbold he may have made it but theres something so charming about clarkson presenting this.
***** nope
Mike Newbold well there is, I know its sarcasm overload. But I like that, it was the first series, they did over do it towards the end of the run it got boring after 4th war. I love the gauntlet in this series it, rather than just battling all the time.
+Mike Newbold I'm autistic. Is there any reason you're asking somebody? I'm certainly hoping it's not because you're attempting to use it negatively. Same goes to 'WhiteEcoFreak.'
Awwwww i remember watching this when i was a little kid, i LOVED every single moment of it :D ... thank you sooo much for putting this up
Hey look, Jeremy with hair!
Hypno-Disc will still hold a special place in me heart :
I don't care what anyone else says. This is Nostalgia at its absolute finest!!
agreed
"Barry" might be the best name for a robot EVER!
Oh they chose the wrong route right from the start shurley because Bash is there!
wow i love how the house robots are crap to the new 1s but they were beast at first
When Clarkson becomes Prime Minister, I want him to be introduced in the same way as he was on this show, 'Commander in Chief'.
Do you actually think it will ever happen though?
I just LOVE Philippa Forrester :-)
CLARKSOOOOOOOON!
Insane how the robots have evolved since then... from clunky, awkward machines to cold, lean, killing monstrosities. Even the house robots, back then, wouldn't be able to put up with the models of today!
why did it have to be Jeremy Clarkson... ugh I almost stopped watching it when i saw him
Craig Charles - Entertaining, funny, caring towards roboteers, seemed to actually give two fucks about what he was doing. Clarkson - Sounded like he was bored all the time, dull, didn't care and was insulting. Yeah, he was much better.....thank god he went to top gear though.
why did they cancel this show, it was one of my favourite things ever in my late childhood, ive even got a toy arena with mini figures lol
@Orumon27 not i rmember the robots and the charnage. i dont remember him though. and thats because he was a boring presenter for the show
The American version (Battle Bots) is so boring! It's all talk! In a show that's an hour long, they have 2 maybe 3 fights!
These early robots would have been like chopping salad for Carbide.
Anyone here from abroad in Japan?
3:03 you can see “Richard Broad” listed as one of the makers of “Killertron”
Honestly, having the gauntlet and some other secondary event really made to robots a lot more diverse and interesting. Now it's all flippers and spinners and kinda gets dull, and the only robots that get wrecked are the ones that dare to challenge that flipper/spinner meta =(
Always felt they should've restricted flippers somehow as Robot Wars went on. They were just too powerful. Spinners were spectacular against weakly-armoured robots, but against properly shielded machines, they'd just bounce off. And the Gauntlet, Trial, Battle format was condensed into 30 minutes. Having just arena battles for 45 minutes with a brief pinball or sumo thrown-in could drag, as much as I loved it.
JEZZA!!!
and so the greatest show began
Barry is the coolest looking in my opinion in this video clip.
Yeah they wouldn't really let people wander in the arena especially with active weapons, house robots and that swinging ball that the camera people are STANDING BEHIND...
jeremy clarkson presents the show as though he watching paint dry :P
jeremy clarkson really wasn't as epic as the dude from red dwarf
lol much prefer him in Top Gear haha
The late top gear R.I.P.
Last "True" episode just aired last Sunday
It wasn't rebuilt, it was an entire new robot. they even kept Nemesis afterwards.
Grunt was actually a stock robot provided by the production company. The series had a shortage of contestants, so the producers added an extra robot to this heat, which was operated by one of the production team.
As were WYSIWYG and Eubank the Mouse
And cruella. In this series
I feel sorry for Barry...reckon they'd've had a good chance if Grunt hadn't been permitted to progress.
Urdnot grunt
At 116kgs it’s actually too heavy for the current Heavyweight class.
Watching Razor was the one. .
Matilda's chainsaw was never really effective against anything stronger than plywood
POWERRR
Finally I get to watch the first series. I only started watching this show midway through Series 2. Now to see how everything evolved from the very beginning...
One of the best shows ever to grace the bbc, it really should still be going on TV today.
Craig's better than Clarky.
Either I was really late to the party when PBS got Robot Wars or they skipped series one.
I want to say I'm nostalgic for this (as much as I hate using the using that word), but I never even got to watch this in the first place.
I would love to see this TV Show back, and on BBC, not Channel 5!!!
Travis Punnett it came back on BBC Two last year!
It came back on science channel this year
This was must watch tv night viewing Friday nights at 6pm BBC Two. Hopefully the programme/all seasons will be available one day on IPlayer.
1:34 what do they need to fix here?
@TheLegacyofHitchcock I said Barry? Oh yes, sorry, I meant to say W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G was also a stock bot. Mistype on my part.
I adored this show as a kid and while back then iI couldn't get enough of seeing the robots suffer, now I can't help but feel bad for the losers knowing just how much work they must have put into these machines.
@molewizard Grunt and Barry were entered by the Robot Wars Producers to fill spaces and were never intended to go through to the arena.
I used to think Philippa Forrester was well fit.
Was still I preferred jayne middlemiss
She was in her absolute prime in Series 1 - bloody gorgeous
Ahhhh good old Nemesis! And good old (/young) Jeremy! Matilda's tail saw used to be crap compared to the newer version...
Thank you so much for putting this ep up. Don't suppose you know which it is (or if you could direct me to it) where Matilda actually blows up and emits blue smoke?
P.s Dead Metal pwnz.
I'll agree with you about Clarkson. I didn't really like Charles when I first saw him in series 2.
But I still think the first 4 house robots and Sir Killalot are still awesome. thou I dont like it when Sir K just picks up robots and spins round a few times. Or when Sgt bash stoped using the saw blad on his back. or when in later seres they would only have two hr in the arena. Mr Psycho was the worst. mean shitty name and crap mallet thing that didnt do anything... haha
Jeremy Clarkson "reporting that warfare has been taken out of Man's hands. We're now at the mercy of machines and the battle the likes of which we've never seen before is about to begin... "
26 years on, the first AI-assisted drones are above the Ukrainian battlefield, targeting tanks and other vehicles on the ground
@tdiking1 Grunt looked nice but it lost because it was a supply robot, since they needded to tot up the numbers. It was the same with WYSIWYG and The Mouse. They all lost in the trials. It explains why Grunst lost the way it did.
I was only 1 when this one came out but i renember watching the newer ones i loved wheely big cheese and King B as he came from Havent witch is just down the road from me :D
Thanks for the upload :D
Where is Craig Charles?
Well, ok, if you say so.
But what do you think it was that made Charlse uninterested? I mean the fights were better than ever and that's really what Robot Wars was (or should be) all about.
Chill dude why you gotta hate xD
Road Block won the entire series not just the heat, I'm just saying it was a nice coincidence that the first robot ever of all won the first series
clarkson described hosting this show as one of the most boring things he has ever done he spent most of the time criticising the robots
but clarkson is still amazing
Is there anyway to get this in higher quality? I know its from the 90s, but as far as I can remember it didn't look THIS bad on my TV
Without raiding the BBC archives, probably not. It's only going to be as good as the quality on the video tape it was recorded on ;)
I don't think Clarkson liked it much though (well not as much as Charles did).
At least Clarkson didn't fake enthusiasm.
(I'm not saying that Charlse did.)
@nooloo3000 Craig Charles now stars in corrination street......-_- What has happened to his career?! Red Dwarf and Robot wars = win! Corrie = FAIL!
Wow it's so weird what it's like before. How different Sgt. Bash and Deadmetal were. And Jeremy Clarkson. He's not fit for Robot Wars.
Roadblock. The first to be introduced, the first to beat the gauntlet, the first to beat shunt and the first to win.
Robot Wars has turned 20 this year. /this first episode started on February 20th 1998.
"Man may have tempered the spectre of nuclear evil, but tonight I have the unenviable task of reporting that warfare has been taken out of Man's hands. We're now at the mercy of machines and the battle the likes of which we've never seen before is about to begin. Outside the studio women have latched themselves to the railing, Britain is about to witness the birth of Robot Wars which is all about robots ... fighting."
@Bigfinlach The house robots are probably sitting in the BBC's headquarters somewhere or in the hands of the guys who made them. I highly doubt they got scrapped, the guys who made them had too much pride in them. Hey I think they should put them on display in a Television Museum or something, it would be awesome!
I don't know, I liked the Beast of Bodmin. I think it had the same power etc as Roadblock but robots had advanced my that time.
@GNRule123 Well it was channel 5 fault it ended. I still haven't watched channel 5 since but anyway they had only 1 advert for it and it was really really bad. Just type in robot wars series 7 advert and you will see also they but it on at 1:00 so everyone would be at work or school.
Why did the series stop? Did it have anything to do with helath and safety, or just a lack of funding? It just seemed to suddeny stop as it was beggining to take off...
As for me, me and my dad used to sit on the sofa and watch it every night, choosing one and cheering it on. Ah, sweet memories...
I find it suspicious that the first competitor robot to appear was the champion to be... Was this all scripted? :(
I wonder how all of the builders accessed and scrounged their parts during the pre-Internet days.
Back when the first series of Robot Wars was hosted by the Orangutan.
...the wedges started early I see...still love robot wars more then battlebots.
I agree, robots are gunner, there is a pit, and it wasn't until 2015, Battlebots had an OITA
@A9132robotwars don't forget he narrated japanese gameshow takishis' castle :D
@R33Racer 2 be fair Craig Charles was more enthusiastic than Clarkson whos definetley better of on Top Gear
Just used to it being Craig Charles...but absolutely understand why Clarkson would host this. Top Gear is pretty much the same thing these days...with cars...on Dave...endlessly
Nemesis looks so freakin stupid. Hahaha! When I saw that, I hoped that one would get destroyed first. That's just an assault on taste!
Also, wtf is on that girl's forehead?
@BBCRobotwarsUK The weight limit in series 1, 2 ,3 was 80 kg i think. Many robots went over the limit though. I don't think they had Middle weights in series 1. Not to sure.
@TotodileFan2009 i was thinking the exact same thing, i remember sitting on the sofa every night too, they where great times, id do anything to have the series back :/
SPOILER ALERT
How fitting that the first bot to come out is the eventual winner of the series!
@BBCRobotwarsUK must be because it was the first series they were a little lean on the rules and probably didnt have as strick weight limit, still ......
Damn I had forgotten about the old style title sequence.
The program looks really low-budget in this series compared to the later seasons and Extreme >__>
The creators of Barry missed the chance for it to crush the opponents with a crucifix (It's from a catholic school btw)
@BBCRobotwarsUK
I think they were just being lax on the rules, and you can enter the heavyweight league with a lighter robot.
Let's be honest, the robots were a bit rubbish in series 1, even the house robots, None of these robots would have lasted long in series 3+
It is charming though
Is it me, or is Nemisis related to Diotor? (I forgot how the later is spelled, so don't pick on me for it please. ^^; )
Ditto, but I live down under now so I don't think there's much chance I'l compete :(
Woo, a simple one in six chance, fucking hell... you might as well say, "I like when I roll a dice and it lands on 2"
And here's where it all begins. From little seeds sprout mighty oaks...
And the very first competitor robot we see is the eventual champion! How's that for ironic (unless they fought the entire war in advance and only shot these introductions afterwards)?
It's amazing that they didn't have standardised engineering rules yet, with robot weights ranging from 45kg to 116kg (weirdly, 45kg was still classified a "heavyweight").
Possibly because there were hardly any contestents so any robot that entered was allowed in (tbf until the show came out it was a pretty niche hobby)
+Loftworthy This aired in 1998. The statute of limitations is well and truly expired. Get over it.
ummm does anine relize that he said "THERE GONNA BE FUCKED UP"!!!!!! And this realy does bring back memorises
yeah but they RUINED it by turning it into Beast of Bodmin :(
The first robot ever seen on there won it... Roadblock was great considering it was just a moving doorstop.
