‘There were others … it wasn’t result shaping’ …. Show the others. Off the top of my head there was a htb against Ridley in which he was tackled as soon as he caught the ball which resulted in a goal to Stengle. Same thing happened to Stringer. A clearing kick out of Geelong’s d50 that wasn’t called insufficient intent despite it being paid all night … yes the bombers didn’t do enough to get back in the game, but it was the umpires that let the air out of it.

The umpiring in the whole 3rd was a shocker. I've seen Blues and Pies supporters on the AFL social pages saying how bad the umpiring was against Essendon. Damo is just playing devils advocate for the sake of it. Maybe he was told to say it, who knows. Regardless, they need to call it out instead of playing it down. I stated before I think Essendon did try and fight back but their efforts fell on deaf umps, those non HTB calls just squashed whatever remaining effort they had. Essendon also need to work on their forward connection and capitlise on their forward 50 entries, if they did, it would've created a buffer for stuff uncontrolled like the crap umpiring. A few missed opportunities there.

They have to be better than that. Geelong had some rough decisions last week against the Blues, at times when they (the Cats) were threatening but Carlton were the better side and won comfortably, but no one mentioned that Geelong got the rough end of the umpiring so often, it was all 'how good are Carlton'. Same case last night with Geelong,..they were a far better side than Essendon on the night in spite of getting a couple of decisions or non-decisions in their favour but all of a sudden it's poor old Essendon.

Had the game been decided by a couple of goals I could understand why Essendon supporters would be p***ed off. All the same, a radical change in umpiring is necessary. I'll start with 50 metre penalties. Get rid of this fiddly-piddly, wishy-washy, half a centimetre over the mark, a nano-second too late garbage. 50 metre penalties should only be for obvious time wasting actions. Kicks towards the boundary line, the opposition must chase after the ball,..if they slow down to allow it to go over in anticipation of a free kick then no free kick to them. It's a shocker of a year for umpiring but with a few tweaks it can get better.

Damo has no idea.. And to say those free kicks wont affect the outcome is silly. 24 points were scored over poor umpiring. In a game thats played in the wet and is such an armwrestle in the first half will absolutely squash momentum. A good team like Collingwood can comeback from these types of scenarios, Essendon almost did but their efforts (those 2 HTB frees soon after) were just not rewarded and they just lost composure under frustration. Brad admitted the 45 point deficit was due to switching to an offensive play to claw back in but exposed their defence. The play was changed literally due to the 24 point onslaught from poor umpiring in the third. Its directly affected the way Essendon played the 4th.

I don't see the point or the merit in showing a graphic of a team's wins against teams that were in the bottom 8 of the ladder.
Where on the ladder was the winning team for those games?
The AFL schedules games at the start of the year. It's not like they have a crystal ball that can help them predict which teams each team will play and where those teams will be on the ladder at any given time of the year.

I would like for the umpires to be held accountable for their mistakes in the same way players are held accountable for theirs - fines and/or suspensions.
I would also like the umpires to be told what the AFL rules are so that they don't go out on the field and just make sh*t up as they have been doing for the past 15 or so years! And teach them how to bounce a bloody ball!!! Seriously, how much time is wasted with all these call backs because the wa*ker in day glo isn't happy with the bounce?
And why are there so many umpires on the field? Is it so that there are more eyes on the ball? How's that been working out? Have the 'powers that be' not heard the expression "too many cooks spoil the broth"? AFL is becoming a popularity contest for the umpires and the players and teams are just falling by the wayside! The viewer is more intent on picking fault with the umpires than with their own team, which is putting more focus on the idiots that shouldn't be focussed on!

They went into the 4th 5 goals down instead of being up. It changes the game massively, completely changes how teams play and their confidence. I think we actually downplay how big of an affect bad calls make, it completely kills players confidence knowing even if they do the right thing they wont be rewarded. @@carletonclements4931 personally I don't mind the rule. The 2008 GF was definitely why they felt they had to bring it in. And today if you look at how far the man on the mark has to stand back for the kick out, and the player kicking out can just run out of the goal square without kicking it to themselves first, rushing behinds would be every second score.
We should go back to 90's rules and allow the game to evolve authentically rather than the AFL forcing so much change.

Geelong have been getting absolutely screwed by the umpires for nearly 2 months now so to have a few 50/50 calls go our way last night was long overdue. I thought the front on contact and deliberate over the line were fair enough, but some of those incorrect disposal calls were poor. The umpiring sucks every week and is a literal lottery, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.
