  • It's only day three and every single little cup of color looks like payne's grey. Shoutout to Vincent @vincent_delannoy because he could see it coming from min. 7 of day one. The once highly saturated pigments have now succumbed to my double-dipping. lol! Maybe that's how I've dealt with saturation... I've convinced myself I'm painting with high chroma when all this time I've just made every single color a liiiitttle bit dirtier, Shawshank style. Give me one more week and all the colors will look like the shitty pipes Andy had to crawl through (ok, that was the last movie ref). In this painting of Dani, I couldn't help but feel she was aware of my frustration. Yes... I finally reached that place where my paintings are starting to judge me.
    Thank you ALL for your incredible support. Dani and I could not be more grateful. If you like what we're doing, please consider donating :) If you're in a rough spot, no worries, we TOTALLY get it! Just know that our content will ALWAYS be here, and our only sponsors are YOU, the wonderful generous people that choose to support us in some way or another. Thank you ALL!!!

    Your painting today feels like oil - your comfort comes through. Wonderful to learn about exciting artists that are not well known. (Now they are.:). Another enlightening day! And you are inspiring because you make it seem possible. (A nice illusion).

    i think that’s how working a piece should happen exactly as you work then the whole piece comes together like building a house. all the walls go up together. not one wall or area at a time. it’s organic. big fan love your work

    About the high chroma nature of the himi was spot on like I bought it because some said the texture was really easy to get used to but i was really afraid of using it and it frustrates me everytime because I don’t get what I really want. I just realized that because I was so used to using watercolors I didn’t fully digest and understand the nature of the paint I’m using.

    I gotta try these jelly gouache one day! Anyway, I think you should try wet the paper on the beginning part of the process, I have seen many water soluble painters doing that, I have tried and it helped me sometimes :)

    Espectacular! Vengo luchando con gouache tradicional, me gusta como se ven éstos, calculo que deben tener algún medium incorporado para que no se sequen tan rápido y sean mas densos. Me encanta como los usaste, sin agua, veo que resultan más faciles de usar así, sin diluir. Gracias por esta semana de gouache =)

    Dude you absolutely killed it with this one. I got this palette as a gift, but I'm still learning to paint, do you think this would be ok if I used it for a limited palette as I get more comfortable with gouache as a medium?

    • @OurPaintedLives
      @OurPaintedLives  3 года назад +15

      Yes, for sure!!! It has nice earth tones, so you can use the yellow ochre, the burnt sienna, the burnt umber, along with the titanium white! Add ivory black if you want to expand it a tiny bit and you're perfect!

    It’s prob (dont know the formula but akin to glycerin) winsor newton watercolour medium. Its a transparent and fluid liquid one can add to watercolour or gouache, which extends their open time. Its pretty cheap, esp considering only a pippet drop or two per pan works well to keep the paint open for a session. As long as the paints are then sealed, it continues to keep the paint open. Bonus!
    I use it with all gouache brands and works universally.

    so after you suggested this jelly paint are a bit different made me curious so i made a bit of the research to find a formula but all i could find is that it's just a regular gouache, no more, no less. it's called "jelly" solely because of the way it's stored although its not something new to put paint in such cups, at least for my local brands haha /sad smiley/
    and it feels jelly bc theres so much paint in these cups that it dries much much slower which is useful not only for continuous sessions but more for mixing wet paint on the fly.
    i personally prefer these form of gouache better for my style of painting haha tho it took me a while to get the hang of it

    • @nicolasuribe135
      @nicolasuribe135 3 года назад +2

      Thanks Milk! Yeah, I guessed the sheer volume of it made it harder for it to dry, but they are cheap, so there's also that... maybe they have a filler that slows drying time just a bit, perhaps?

    • @milkmothmaen
      @milkmothmaen 3 года назад +1

      there is a possibility actually! comparing them to my own set (not humi but just paint in simular cups) after 6 months they look better than mine (when i was doing my tiny research i found a reddit thread and someone showed humi's state after quite a while)
      i wish we could see paint's documentation to compare side by side...
      also, I wanted to ask! the box doesn't really look like it closes tight. i am not even curious about paint getting dry but rather if this set is safe travel-wise?

    It would be interesting for you to explain your decisions before you start a painting. How much of the finished product you have already visualized? It seems that you set your values first with a dark wash. And then the details can change - it builds from there. What are your thoughts as you proceed? Gouache allows you to still work dark to light.
    How do you adjust to do watercolors? I"m beginning to realize you have to work the opposite - light to dark. And not being able to make value changes dark to light as you paint.
    I wish you would find a way for oil painting personalities to do watercolors.

  • @ThePointedPaintbrush

    Not sure all the deets of the medium used but I’m thinking something to keep it more moist. I have these same paints but I let the pots dry completely after leaving it open so I can control the water ratio. The rewet beautifully as well! I add a bit of water to eat well a bit before I paint.
    You can get the full range of thickness still! The paints perform pretty typically of most regular gouache to me. They are ‘softer’ but it appears the same on the page. W&N is a lot drier in formula, but this kind sorta reminds me of Holbein and M. Graham. I’m very impressed by this paint because it performs as if it has actual pigments and not dyes. Maybe they are similar to poster colors? Never tried them myself but seems similar from what I’ve seen. They are also an Asian brand, and some Asian paints use different binders than western brands :)

    • @ThePointedPaintbrush
      @ThePointedPaintbrush 3 года назад

      Looking at the Amazon listings, it shows an image of the colors with pigment names so I’m assume real pigment is used. Can’t find info on the binder, but after researching poster paints a tad bit more, I’m thinking they probably have a similar binder and not just typical gum arabic. Have you tried Japanese Gansai watercolor paints? They have a similar texture and those traditionally used animal glue but moderno y use beeswax or sugars. Even though these paints are cheap, the range of opacity you can get from watercolor like washes to thick strokes is remarkable.
