I miss those days when Gary Numan, John Foxx, Japan et al were releasing dark, eerie, haunting electro classics like this... What an incredible era that was!
@@justincase4812 - you MUST be joking! John Foxx was absolutely NOT "overrated"! If anything, he was, and remains, seriously underrated... Gary Numan himself has stated that both musically and lyrically Foxx was the one who opened the door for everyone else in that era...
@@DaveAndBeth1978 My point is "first" is not best. Heck, his work with Ultravox was terrible too. I just cringe when people over praise Foxx for what was inevitable in the new wave front.
@@justincase4812 - "over praise"... Are you trying to be funny?! How can you "over praise" someone who's work was barely recognised?! His work with Ultravox was not "terrible" - far from it, it was innovative and pushed boundaries...
With you Martin. Pisses me off how he was driven from the charts by the press. This guy spoon fed a ton of others on electronic music sensibilities. This track is a blast now, sounds fresh and is really cool.
+Dave Stawecki Whereas Numan had the vision (and yes a bit of luck) to make it a success. I think they used each other in one way or another...A for the record I like Japan. It's all plagiarism anyway -Bowie - Kraftwerk - Numan - Japan - Ultravox - John Foxx - Ladytron - Goldfrapp - etc etc....The key is to just sit back and enjoy. I discovered Numan in '79 and actually listening to his music got me into a lot of groups too. Cheers !!
I'm 15 years old and have been brought up with this music by my dad. I can't thank him enough. Yes, I may listen to screamo and fall under the 'emo' or 'scene' stereotype, but music will never be as good as this. Numanoid for life.
I say often I got tired of the 70's longhairs with their guitars. Then came synths, starving British bands on the Dole, and inno-freaking-vation! Electronic music appealed to something I had no name for, but which I now recognize is my cold, cold silicon heart...For a decade or more, Gary Numan was my Number 1.
Omg... classic Numan moves... Underrated single from the tail end of the classic period... I Assassin is a brilliant collection, a must have Numan LP...
Love this single and the promotional video is fantastic ...on British TV I do t think it was shown but was released on a Numan compilation music VHS video cassette yrs ago
When the BBC used to play this track whether it was on the radio or on TV, they always left the last two words out of the title, so it was always announced by the presenter (Top of the Pops) or the DJ as 'We Take Mystery'. Brilliant track and one of his best. Thanks for uploading x
Same reason as many other records in that vein (Underpass by John Foxx or Life In Tokyo by Japan being another two examples from the same era) were only minor hits - they were a little too far ahead of the game...
I have the 12 inch extended single version it never loses its fantastic appeal this track .There is a great top of the pops specially made film of this song too from Gary in the US
in a week i will have the same fretless bass as pino palladino that man is amazing...he is pl.aying with the jon mayer trio 28 years later and still kicking ass...he is a giant
One of my favourites of all his stuff got to be in my personal Top 5 obviously on 12" of course - so many ideas doing on here - from 1982 the unbeatable year for music as far as I'm concerned. Sort of sums up the cutting edge of New Romantic/snthpop whatever you want to call it dancefloor classics.
There is no longer any normal to me You're my assassin but you can't see the crime Pointless possessions of me & you & greed I looked at you mistaking needles for eyes Something is wrong... I know the song is about a woman but to me it parallels with the current political state in the UK. And the bass line is f**king fantastic. One of Gary's best tunes.
@xlheartlx On CD you will get the original mix with more words as an extra track. A longer poem. Remember when musicians wrote poems? In this finished version he didn't actually say "we take mystery to bed".
Thats the great"Pino pallidino" playing his unique frettless style bass He was a very in demand bass player in the early 80"s Paul young David Gilmour etc He now plays a fretted bass with the who
Numan feels like the press have "made fun of him too much", but many later groups have been inspired by him. He also dared to use a fretless bass in this song; wasn't it the first time anybody used it in dance music or something?
Only numan can get away with those dance moves.remember getting laughed out of our local early 90's for sticking on this tune on juke box cos everyone was fucking pilled now teens from this era are listening to garys stuff.we await the next tubeway army.
one of his best songs from this period.... despite his prowess at imitating Bowie... I think its safe to say Bowies dance moves are safe... this is just really weird dancing!
I agree, there are things I like in this video, such as the glass-smashing-gas-masked character, but Gary in his floppy, oversized 'newsie hat', just makes me want to cry. LOL Well, and the film quality is pretty crunchy.

Feel the same. Metamatic & The Garden by John Foxx still gets played.
John Foxx is over rated. He has his moments that are great but nothing special IMO. His music is good, his lyrics are atrocious.

Fabulous slap bass makes this. ❤❤
You must admit. this man is way ahead of his time. there is only one Gary Numan
With you Martin. Pisses me off how he was driven from the charts by the press. This guy spoon fed a ton of others on electronic music sensibilities. This track is a blast now, sounds fresh and is really cool.
+martin fox Except the band Japan sounded exactly like this 3 years before.

+Dave Stawecki Numan had released replicas 3 years earlier. Japan earlier on were more guitar orientated, as indeed Numan was.
absolutely
Jeeeezz. I've probably not listened to this for the thick end of 40 odd years, and I had totally forgotten what a great song it is. 👌
I was born this year......thank you numan for all your music....
Shout out to my fellow Exennials group 1978 - 1983 sisters and brothers
40years later and Gary's still making awesome music. Simply one of the best musicians ever!
The synth is to die for & Gary is so hypnotic
This is an incredible fucking awesome brilliant song!
We take. Slow version better! Nu the man wont go!
From a time when music was a way of life. Not anymore.
I wasn't born yet when this song came out. The beat is kicking and it has a modern vibe to it. The video is kinda freaky... I like 👍
Listen to that bass, fretless funk bass. What a perfect fusion of new wave and funkiness!
Pino Palladino just killing it on the fretless 'Ray
Good call, legendary bass player. He's amazing on No Parlez by Paul Young too.
Great choice of distinctive bassist

not far off 30 now 😊
Gary was so far ahead and influential back in the early 80s.
I'd never heard this song until now and wow have I been missing out
Number 9 hit in the UK in June 1982.
How was this not a number one hit.. genius
Gary is gorgeous
Stunning and timeless. The fret less bass is just drowning in pure heaven!
I love this song

funking brilliant song. i was 14 and it still gets me now.
Omg... classic Numan moves... Underrated single from the tail end of the classic period... I Assassin is a brilliant collection, a must have Numan LP...
Don't consider it under rated. It was the last time he released a really great commercial single. as a solo artist
Love this single and the promotional video is fantastic ...on British TV I do t think it was shown but was released on a Numan compilation music VHS video cassette yrs ago
gosh i love this man's music!
love this vid always have
Haven't seen/heard this gem since 1983!
Brilliant, his voice in this reminds me of David Sylvian.
When the BBC used to play this track whether it was on the radio or on TV, they always left the last two words out of the title, so it was always announced by the presenter (Top of the Pops) or the DJ as 'We Take Mystery'. Brilliant track and one of his best. Thanks for uploading x
If you like it you like it I guess.. Not many would consider it one of his best however.
Gary was just awesome. musically and lyrically. I can't understant why this record wasn't a big hit.
Same reason as many other records in that vein (Underpass by John Foxx or Life In Tokyo by Japan being another two examples from the same era) were only minor hits - they were a little too far ahead of the game...
The polymoog and ARP Odyssey was well worn about this time but Gary kept it alive on this track.
The ' I Assassin ' album was his best album since ' The Pleasure Principle ' album.
God he is so gorgeous! I remember buying this when it was released. It still sounds new with each listen. Pure brilliance!
Great song
Fantastic song and vid love it
A bop. I love Gary Numan
Brilliant. And very similar to Japan's Gentlemen Take Polaroids album, soundwise. Thank You for having posted this gem. xx
One of my fave Numan tracks... and my eldest sons - was 12 when it was released. Banging track from a banging album! Patrick ;) xx
I have the 12 inch extended single version it never loses its fantastic appeal this track .There is a great top of the pops specially made film of this song too from Gary in the US
My favourite Numan track. No apologies.
Found this yesterday...fantastic, no words! Top party hit.
One of my favorites!
A strange favourite to have but yeah I guess that's cool.
Fan since '79 he rocks it like a hurricane.
Bring back dark electro
It never left. ;)
I think you'd like Grimes's early music. Listen to Visions
How COOL. I've been listening to that song for 27 years and this is the first time I've seen a video for it. Thanks Patrick!
in a week i will have the same fretless bass as pino palladino that man is amazing...he is pl.aying with the jon mayer trio 28 years later and still kicking ass...he is a giant
Love that bass 🎸
gary forever
I LOVE THIS SONG! so much!
I think I am in love thank you for sharing
I am not a Gary Numan fan but I do like this one.
To not be a Numan fan but nevertheless like one of his more obscure slightly dorky tracks is well... Ok I guess.
Another one of the funkiest New Wave songs ever made!
'you're my assassin but you can't see the crime'
love that line, it...it just sounds perfect, even without synths under it!
the extended full length version is on the OOP banquet cd,..... Search ebay or amazon for a good price. BTW, my fave numan song hands down.
Patrick, you make me very happy I named my son that.
haha yeh its one of my fav's too especially the extended version :)
My favourite Numan track.
Reminds me of Japan a bit, fantastic song!
I was wondering if that was Mick Karn on bass on this song...
No it's Pino Palladino who sounded a lot like Mick. Pino also played on a lot of Paul Young singles.
love it, love everything about it.
I frigging love this song. This is such a more danceable song than Cars, and I love the way he puts a melody together with a rocking bass.
Fuckin genius. Musically inspirational and influential. One of the all time greats!
There is no longer any normal to me
You're my assassin but you can't see the crime
Pointless possessions of me & you & greed
I looked at you mistaking needles for eyes
Something is wrong...
I know the song is about a woman but to me it parallels with the current political state in the UK. And the bass line is f**king fantastic. One of Gary's best tunes.
That bass guitar is something else!
LOL "The Prisoner" chair! Yes, 12" is stunning!! Fantastic...
@xlheartlx On CD you will get the original mix with more words as an extra track. A longer poem. Remember when musicians wrote poems? In this finished version he didn't actually say "we take mystery to bed".
Brillant track!!!!!
Forgot all about this from 1982 why isn't it played more instead same play lists all the time
It would have been great to have Pino Palladino and Mick Karn playing bass together.
Thank you for posting this ❤️
You're right on that!
Pino Palladino...his signature on this track is an embarassing beauty! 🤩🥰
That bassline tho. Was this pre or post Duran Duran explosion?
I think Pino Palladino did the bass work on this album. Probably why it sounds so good.
Incredible bass sound at 2.12- 2.20
superb bass line
Thats the great"Pino pallidino" playing his unique frettless style bass He was a very in demand bass player in the early 80"s Paul young David Gilmour etc He now plays a fretted bass with the who
Lord fauntleroy Thanks yeah I've heard of him now a few times, great bass player
Numan feels like the press have "made fun of him too much", but many later groups have been inspired by him. He also dared to use a fretless bass in this song; wasn't it the first time anybody used it in dance music or something?
@TheBMTHfreak Try to find Gary Numan's "The Life Machine". Not Emo crap, but intense emotions on a heart-wrenching issue.
SP this is not my type I would EDIT it a bit. It is The One.
You can spot Mick Karn in seconds here :)
Gary and his hat collection.
He was going bald at the time or in the middle of lengthy hair transplant procedures as they were back then.
I am dear to this ...someone please agree to the same ....
He looks so nice
brilliant song by numan yet again, shame about the vid, saying that it was the 80,s
still sounds good now though, numaniod forever!
gary uma is my hero
Only numan can get away with those dance moves.remember getting laughed out of our local early 90's for sticking on this tune on juke box cos everyone was fucking pilled now teens from this era are listening to garys stuff.we await the next tubeway army.
Please correct the spelling of the word "Mystery" in the title, whenever you can.
The man
This is not my favorite Gary Numan song, but waking up to a girl going down on me to this song forever leaves this in my memory.
HOW I MISS EAST BERLIN...
Numanette wanted!
Lord Numan liked breaking glass in thos days didn't he?
One of Lord Numans biggest fans I is
one of his best songs from this period.... despite his prowess at imitating Bowie... I think its safe to say Bowies dance moves are safe... this is just really weird dancing!
This may be a stupid question, but what is the car at 00:35 ?
A Ferrari 512BB with the number plate GN4 😎 www.driving.co.uk/news/interview/motor-gary-numan-electronic-musician/
@scootermad666 dont forget the DSR tour in September :) i cant wait!
Aye its a top name! :)
Damn I love Gary in smoking!
I agree, there are things I like in this video, such as the glass-smashing-gas-masked character, but Gary in his floppy, oversized 'newsie hat', just makes me want to cry. LOL Well, and the film quality is pretty crunchy.
Esta es una clásica de SUPER FM 93.1.... RIP.....
which bass line
Gary's doing the Carlton dance from Fresh Prince of Bel Air and that 'dance' was a very 80s thing to do!
yeh the 12" version is heaven!
