"Chuck! Chuck! It's Marvin! Your cousin, Marvin BERRY? You know that new sound you're looking for? Well, listen to THIS!"
Great scot!!
You make a time machine.. OUT OF A DELOREAN!
You beat me to it. Can't listen to CB without thinking of Back To The Future
@@albertsmith9315 And that moment when Marty morphs from Chuck Berry into Eddie Van Halen (with a dash of Pete Townshend)...
You are my density.
Something you may not know. Adults at that time were usually very critical of Rock music, and a common thing they would say is “If Beethoven could hear this music, he’d be rolling in his grave.” Every kid had heard this. This song is Chuck Berry’s cheeky response - Keep rolling, Beethoven, cause I’m asking my (radio disc) jockey to play it again!
The Farther of Rock and Roll. Without Chuck's riffs there be NO Rock and Roll guitar. As John Lennon said if Rock and Roll had another name it would be Chuck Berry.
At best Chuckie was one of the grandchildren of R & R. As Chuck himself said he was just one of the cogs.
His riff was from Louis Jordan ruclips.net/video/fd3qXfF7hqE/видео.html
@@timcarr6401 yes Chuck was one of the OGs of Rock and Roll along with Fats Dominoes, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Bill Hailey.
@@rickpetersen1745 Elvis eclipsed them all.
Imagine if instead of rock & roll, it was named chuck & berry! 😆Today we'd be talking about Chuck music: hard chuck, soft chuck, chuckabilly ... Queen's big hit would have been "We Will Chuck You" ... 🤣
Chuck Berry pre-dated the Twist, when people danced to his music it was more like Jitter Bug.
Or the Lindy Hop or the Bop.
Yep , Chuck Berry - You Can Never Can Tell
You're depriving yourselves by not watching a live version of Chuck doing this song.
The famous duck walk! He was a whirlwind on stage.
I was thinking the same thing...you just have to watch him performing and doing the famous Duck walk.
Recorded version is better.
To be short: this is rock and roll. When you hear it, you move. This is the Chuck Berry riff.
where ever he went he brown bagged it. slept in his car. later on he would charge 10k a show. and gave the local band 1000$. Bruce Springsteen played a show when he was young.
Moving yes twisting no. The song came out in ‘56, dancing the twist in ‘59, Cubby Checker, The Twist 1960! 😉
Written by Chuck and covered by the Beatles and ELO. Great song and I especially liked the ELO cover. It was featured in the movie "Back To The Future". Chuck influenced a lot of musicians.
I think Little Richard covered this song too.
Johnny B. Goode was the one featured. At least that's the one Michael J. Fox sang.
Johnny B. Goode was the Chuck Berry song that was in "Back To The Future."
Well.. you said what I was going to. And ELOs cover is over the top amazing
The Beatles version of Roll Over Beethoven was featured in Superman III.
muddy waters. the blues had a baby and called it rock n roll
The Beatles do this song as well, just a few years later.
Don't be so quick to sneer at Beethoven! One thing your channel has taught you is that if you are a lover of music, there's room in your soul for all kinds of great music-no matter when it was written. You often say you love piano, so why not dial up Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata," just the first movement. It's about 7-8 minutes long, depending on who is playing the piano. (You'll be saying, "drop in the comments which other Beethoven we should listen to...")
No, there aren't any words to sing along to, but trust me, you'll get it. Imagine you are Beethoven, trying to get this girl to fall in love with you. Maybe she's rejected you once or twice. Then you go up to her and say, "Listen, I wrote this just for you," and then you play her the Moonlight Sonata. Say something like, "I was alone the other night, just me and the moon, thinking about you, and I wrote this." It's likely you'd melt her heart. It's the same thing that goes on with music today, back in the 90s, 80s, 70s, 60s, 50s, 40s...all the way back to the 1800s. Music is about communicating something to the listener. And the things we try to communicate to each other today were just as true a few hundred years ago. Trust me, good music is good music, and you know it when you hear it.
That said, Chuck Berry here is wearing the hat of a rebel telling Beethoven his time is over, that rock and roll is the new language of music. No one ever seems to mention that. After all, rock and roll was first and foremost a rebellious music.
Beethoven is my favorite musical composer/artist of all time. "Roll over" pays homage to the longtime saying that so-and-so is rolling over in his grave because of (this new rock and roll music). Chuck Berry was acknowledging that his new song was one more step away from the classical/romantic music of the great Beethoven, and inviting him to go ahead and do his rolling over.
Seconding the universal never old appeal of great music like Beethoven's works
Beethoven had rock in his soul, too. He came up with some brilliant hooks. Absolutely everyone recognises the opening notes (dare I call it a riff?) of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5.
Maybe start them out slow with Walter Murphy’s, A Fifth of Beethoven. Just kidding!
This is such a great explanation of classical music. My daughter laughed when I said we're gonna listen to some classical music. But when I told her she had to make a story to go along with all the rhythms and feel what the music was saying she got totally into it. "A girl night rescuing a prince, climbing castle walls, fighting dragons, losing her best friend"... her stories were epic. She loves listening now.
You need to listen to Chuck Berry (you never can tell) next.
He was a musical genius. I wish he could've lived forever. There's a live video available of him singing My Ding-a-ling that you would love. He has the audience play battle of the sexes with it. You really get to see who the man really was. A musical genius.
I was in the audience, 1971 Birmingham UK, an amazing night. ✌️

@@cliffordjones9226 thanks for that, Lanchester Arts Festival, I even stayed for Pink Floyd’s second ever performance of DSM, what a night. I came down from Yorkshire and stayed with mates in Brummy, that’s where I got confused. Good times ✌️
Shows how great of an entertainer he really was. Watching it live is the best way to experience that one. Comic genius.
Berry had no manager, handlers, or security handled everything himself.
Mr. Berry named all of his guitars Maybelline, and he wrote a song called Maybelline.
The Maybelline in the song was his car.
Chuck Berry is the real king of rock and roll
He was the most original and unique
He wrote all his songs he did not steal from other artists
He is the G.O.A.T
There is nothing wrong with covers. A song can be interpreted many different ways. Music is not meant to be static....IMO
His cousin Marvin would beg to disagree🤣🤣🤣
Lol
@@ronnix23 Marty McFly wrote this, right?
It's not stealing if you're giving credit and royalties. If you're referring to Elvis(not saying you are but you might be) he gave proper credit to the songs he covered. If they had bad publishing deals that's not his fault.
Your next Chuck Berry reaction should be "No Particular Place To Go," My personal favorite Chuck Berry song!
this is the king of rock and roll
Ah, no.
Jerry Lee Louis "Great Balls of Fire".
Y'all need to check out one his videos. You'll see his showmanship.
J & Amber, his "Rock And Roll Music", "Sweet Little Sixteen" and "Maybellene" are next for you!!!
"Rock and Roll Music" is one John Lennon took and went beyond the original with the Beatles. ;)
Those were going to be my suggestions too.
Wife here...AMAZING!!....Yes, Amber..He is the Father of Rock and Roll!!..Could play the guitar like nobody's business!!..TRUE ROCK ROYALTY!!!...Thank you once again..
Don't forget Fats Domino. He had a record called "The Fatman" out in 1949. It was rock and roll.
Great song; based on the New Orleans piano classic “Junker’s Blues”
Chubby Checker got his name from his record label trying to come up with a name to match Fats Domino.
@@walterrutherford8321 Wow. I did not know that.
Chuck's "Promised Land" is a MUST!
Chuck is amazing! I think that the grandmother of rock and roll is Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Since the 40's she has played an electric guitar, blending gospel and blues and jazz to begin the creation of rock and roll. "Didn't it rain" gives a good example of her guitar work
Yes people have a real tendency to forget where Rock and Roll started and those people who started something that any modern music listener should know and respect. There were artist like Goree Carter, Gatemouth Brown and T Bone Walker who gave guitar elements before Chuck. If it were not for these pioneers modern music would not be as it is.
She should be in Hall.of Fame
@@michaeltaylor8835 She is. Inducted in 2017, finally.
As for dancing. If she's dancing with a good strong partner who can lead you don't need to be coordinated.
The term Rockn Roll was literally invented to market black music to the mainstream. Its black blues & R&B. Chuck Berry just had an original take on it. He didn't invent it but defintly had a style that made it accessible.
It was Chuck Berry that made entire generations want to grab a guitar and ‘rock’. If you haven’t seen him move on stage you are in for a treat. He was a showman on another level for back in that day when hardly anyone moved on stage. Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Elvis
Bob Seger said it best in the song, Rock n Roll Never Forgets, when he penned the line, “Well all of Chuck’s children are out there playing his licks, get into your kicks. Come back baby, rock and roll never forgets.”
Chuck Berry was the best. Remember that guitarist on the Rod Steward Hot legs video, that guy used Chuck Berry's move.
The Beatles also did a cover of this song.
Both of you would be surprised that Classical music related to Rock especially Heavy Metal. Man named Sam Dunn made a series called Metal Evolution. Metal Evolution is 12 episodes series 1st aired on then Vh1Classic back in 2011. Sam analyzed the history of Metal from beginnings to current music. He traces Metal to Classical. I think that there are clips of this series on RUclips.
They probably were dancing the jitterbug to this. The twist came around 1959-60 Chubbie Checker
The Beach Boys first hits were 1962 63
Jitterbug was the '40s
@@blainer.hammond9539 excuse but my sisters were dancing the jitterbug in the 1950’s also.
@@ThePierce5144 Well, I was a teenager and the only people I knew who danced the jitterbug were my parents, but I bow to your personal experience.
As good a guitar player as you will ever see. A one man show!!!!!
I thought the funniest thing ever brother was Keith Richards Keith Richards talking about he went backstage somewhere that was playing at or something and there was boom Chuck Berry's guitar it was like a Pandora box he opened it up he put the lovely thing in his hand and the Chuck bag gave him the the Hawaiian Punch The Berry Punch he give him a a Berry Punch and right in the mouth he didn't back up that guitar again I don't know
Hey give him that old fashioned old-fashioned Hawaiian Hawaiian time should I old fashioned
Hey brother hit the wrong button I know you understand sometimes it takes Amanda Shack it time second time brother to get it right I okay all night I'm out why boy I be out of here
Chuck Berry said his stage performances and guitar riffs began as an imitation of Sister Rosetta Tharpe....
He always made the promoter pay up front, in cash, and provide the backup band.
You should check out Chuck Berry's No. 1 pop hit from 1972 called "My Ding-a-Ling." It's funny and purposely slightly naughty. :-)
A buddy of mine (who is older than me) played with Chuck Berry in Montreal. Late 60's early 70s. His band was tapped to be Berry's band for the night. He has some cool pics. Before the show Chuck was sitting with his guitar back stage waiting to get paid before he would go on stage. Ha!
ALSO: Yup, Rock & Roll is dance music. Pure and simple.
I knew a guy who did a gig like that. Chuck often didn't travel with a band, the venue or the promoter would have to put a band together. He said Chuck was an amazing musician, but almost impossible to work with. He didn't really rehearse with the band, he just expected everyone to keep up with him. Would do stuff like start a song in a different key than was on the charts, and expect everyone else to just figure it out and keep up.
@@jasonremy1627 "It's a Blues Riff and Beat....watch me for the Changes.......and try to keep up" -- Marty McFly
@@jasonremy1627 Many of Chuck’s songs had the tape speeded up on recorded versions, so the band would be off if they learned Bb instead of A, that’s for sure!
You have to do the live version of "My Ding-a-ling"
I don't know about twisting but they were swinging for sure, the beginnings of Rockband Roll!! This was wild back then😉😁
Little Richard may argue the 'Father of Rock' title. He pitched a fit for 40 years over that.😆
I think Little Richard eventually accepted the title of The Architect of Rock n Roll
Little Richard had Paul McCartney as an acolyte, Chuck Berry had John Lennon as an acolyte. 🤪
Nice, but when you listen to Chuck, you also need to watch Chuck. Charismatic
I think the music from the latter half of the 1950s helped to spur the social revolution of the '60s. Rock and Roll changed the world...
get it yall you caught the beat. its contagious
ELO does a great cover of this song.
ROB SQUAD, I SAW ANOTHER COMMENT SUGGESTING THE SONG "MY DINGA-LING" AND I WANT TO SECOND THAT EMOTION!! YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!

@@johnpressey5900 YES, ABSOLUTELY!!
Tell Tchaikovsky the news This is one of the the rock n roll standards . It’s been recorded by such artists as The Beatles in 1963, The Rolling Stones in 64, and ELO in 73
Whether you react to it or not, I'll bet you would enjoy much of Beethoven's music. Good places to start would be his 5th Symphony, 7th Symphony, 9th Symphony, Moonlight Sonata (for piano), Für Elise. Mozart - 41st Symphony, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Bach - Toccata and Fugue in D minor, Brandenburg Concertos. I love my rock 'n roll and blues, but classical music has opened up a whole new world of enjoyment.
All those music pieces are always said they are classical. Why because those sounds and styles still cannot be beat and sound as good today as the days they were made )
I totally agree classical music is iconic music it goes back hundreds of years, the great composers. It took me a few years to latch onto classical but I’ve never looked back
Completely agree with everything here. Bach is my personal favorite. So many masterpieces.
@@mljrotag6343 Bach invented the chord progressions used in heavy metal.
Ha. I studied music from the age of 4, and just for a kick, gotta say my Ph.D. dissertation at the age of 62 is about music and art and how we communicate from our souls through our art - it is how our personal magic comes out of us - our art. In a class called Symphonic Literature I took at Berkeley, we studied the symphonic format (3 and 4 movement) from Bach to the Beatles. Few people realize the bones of this music comes from symphonic writing.
Check out ELO’s version, too.
And The Beatles as well!
You should always watch Chuck Berry live!! You never know what he’s going to do!! Chuck is very spontaneous!!!
Chuck Berry influenced so many artists. The Beatles and Bruce Springsteen among them. The Beatles did a cover of this song.
ELO did a cover of this as well. The Beatles also covered his Rock And Roll Music.
@@surlechapeau Imo The Beatles version of Rock n Roll Music slaughters Chucks
Chuck Berry influenced the artists I grew up listening to;The Stones, Linda Ronstadt,Springsteen,Bob Seger, etc.I truly believe that's why the 1970s was the best decade of music.
Springsteen once said that the first time he heard a Chuck Berry riff it was being played by the Rolling Stones. Segregation was rife on the radio in the US
and Elvis too.
Great choice again guys! You MUST watch his video of him singing 'My Ding-a-ling', you will love it!
You should check out "Back in the USA" with Linda Ronstadt, Chuck Berry and Keith Richards for Chuck Berry's 60th Birthday.
Just an FYI J.. when you say you can imagine the girls Dancing in their Poodle Skirts... Remember that could have been your Grandma when Rock and Roll was cool!!!

Chuck Berry WAS the originator ... but the long ELO version on "ELO 2" is EPIC
Exactly, and there were others who covered this wonderful rock and roll song! ELO in the early 1970's they combined both Beethoven's classical piece meshed in with their rock and roll sound and they made it over 8 minutes long! That was an awesome version to listen to as well! Hopefully someone can request it so that Jay and Amber can react to it too! What a treat that would be to see! 👍😊
Chuck Berry is the legend !
Primal rock'n'roll at it's finest!
Chuck Berry is the Master Tape of Rock and Roll. It all starts with him.
Chuck Berry is rock and roll patient zero.
Thank you from an old man for allowing me to hear these songs I take for granted with new ears. Enjoy the journey.
Fun fact: Beethovan was deaf. He composed classical music through the vibration in the bones in his ears. It's incredible when you think about it. Love you guys.✌🌻🌻
He was deaf in his older years but not during most of his life
He knew music so well, he was confident that what he wrote on the page would sound like the music in his head!

Chuck was the man God bless him the beetle's covered this song they were big Chuck Berry fans
Rock n Roll was the combination of rhythm and blues and country or hillbilly music. Early rock was called rock a billy. The early pioneers were Berry,Little Richard,Holly,Cash,Presley Twitty,Lewis,Perkins among others. All music goes so far back . At the turn of the century Ragtime was the popular music then Jazz, Blues Rhythm and blues, boogie woogie swing, blue grass, hillbilly, country rock folk etc
The original peaked at number two on R&B chart and 29 on the pop chart. The Beatles cover only made it to 30.
Also sung by the Beatles. Not an expert but rock was probably developed from the swing music of the 40s.... everything has a precedent, even blues, which probably came from church music. Suggest In the Mood by Glenn Miller
Nope
Yes rock and roll was partially derived from swing, jump blues, blues, r&b and country.
Try listening to Louis Jordan and his Tympani Five sometime. They definitely were in a nebulous border that isn't quite rock yet, but was going in that direction.
Yup
Bob Seger in a lyric described rock & roll guitarists as "all of Chuck's children, out there playing his licks". Peace.
He puts the Roll in Rockand Roll…lovelovelove ❤️✌🏻🌸
ELO did a fantastic cover of this amazing Chuck Berry song!
The Beatles did a great cover.
love this music
The artists/guitar players back then did not use distortion that's why you get the clean sound. The amps back then were all tube amps not solid state. Tube amps give the guitars that warm fuzzy sound.
I really enjoy it when Amber gets into the music and dances in her chair, she goes into the Stray Cat Strut!
The next one should be "No Particular Place To Go" another Chuck classic.
Chuck Berry is maybe the premier R&R pioneer. I also love the Beatles cover of this.
His inspiration for the song came from his sister Lucy always wanting to monopolize the family piano to play classical music while he wanted to play popular music.
Rock-n-Roll LEGEND! His influence is ALL OVER Rock and pop music. Super cool guy.
Some Chuck Berry tunes you might want to also check out are Let It Rock and Reelin' and Rockin'...Seriously good stuff...
Again, I will suggest the 80's country band Alabama. Their first hit was "Love in the First Degree", and they kept going from there. You will not be disappointed in them!!!!

In the Beatles early days, they covered a lot of artists. This was one of them.
@B Gallagher I think that would be "Do You Want To Know A Secret", but don't quote me.
This really makes me want you to react to the movie "Beethoven" from 1992 :D I think ya'll would enjoy it.
