Don't forget....lets create a wish list. I will start ordering these new suggested supplies TONIGHT...I actually need new gear...so lets get creative and try some new stuff!
@@RichardFriendartist Thanks that explains it! Couldn't find the aero flash white paint anywhere. Can you tell the number code for the white paint? The ones you use.
I have a big bottle of Higgin Black Magic sitting on my desk for probably 10 years, so maybe now its in jet black. My two desks are absolutely covered, one I call my black and white table loaded with drawings and the other my color table loaded with around 100+ miniatures and acrylics in various stages.
I've been hooked on using brush pens for the last couple of years. And, even though I hated the pen at first, I really got into cross hatching after using the Copic Drawing Pen. I started with JetPens' "Brush Pen Sampler". For $25 definitely worth it. You can see samples on my Instagram page: jncomix_art
Woah! that Nick Manobat book is totally amazing, man!!! That is some killer style inks with loads of exotic creativity right there! I never heard or seen before.
Nibs Zebra g pen Zebra or nikko maru pen Inks Deleter no3 and no4 Rohrer klinger drawing ink Kuretake manga ink, btw it has the best bottle design W&N india ink, super black but shinny as all shellac based inks Fw acrylic ink White inks Deleter white no2 the absolute best Copic white good but needlessly expensive Fw acrylic white ink, good only for nib application Pentel brushpens the big squishy ones especially the fine tip, can be refilled with rotring ink Kuretake no 13
Very cool video Richard, I really enjoyed seeing the materials you use to inking, in a way, it's not much different from what I use to do my own work (I'm from Brazil). The most interesting thing is to try to understand how you use those different materials, because, here where I live, it's hard to find these materials to buyl, and when you did, it's very expensive. So trying to understand how you use them helps me make the most of every material I own to eventually get a good quality of work. And as you commented in the video, I will indicate a material for you to test. I don't have these pens, but I would like to see a pro using them to understand how they work and see if it's worth the investment. The pens are Pilot Parallel Pen, they are for calligraphy, but they seems to be nice draw with. Thanks
Fantastic video and timing. My daughter just signed up for an art class for this upcoming semester and asked me not even 2 hours ago about supplies. I directed her to this video!!
By far one of the most enlightening overall dive into the mindset of working in multimedia lol wish you taught the class I took in college would have years off of my learning curve
I like tachikawa nib holders, and G Pens. Versatile like 102s but 102s are a little finer...under my control. For pencils, i have a metal 2mm Pacific Arc 4h. I like heavy metal pencils. Plastics seem too light. Eon ink i like best on Eon boards. I have only used them and Speedball inks. sakura tech pens copic. Gotta try the Radiograph next. 005 and 003...my go tos
I saw Daniel Warren Johnson using pentel white out pens for white lines and that has really worked well for me in terms of creating bold striking white line work. I'll use gouache for the brushy effects stuff, but you should try it out! I admit isn't not the most complicit for inking back over and the line flow takes a while to get used to, but it reproduces really cleanly too. Also, the Tombow firm tip has largely made me give up the Hunt 102s as I live in Australia and their upkeep against clogging and rust is a nightmare. We have shit paper here too, which struggles to deal with the scratchiness. The Tombow firm tip is classed as a brushtip, but it mimics a 102 very closely and reproduces well! Saw Eric Canete using one on insta the other day, so that's always a good sign...
I've tried the copic pen, they are expensive, the tips are too fragile, it's heavy, the cap when you pull it off from the back constantly remove the ink cartridge, the cap when you clip it on the back of your pen or cap it can clip and remove skin off your fingers, it round and rolls off the table. I like the Hi-tec C, it's light, cheap, and has pretty durable tip and works great with copic markers. Only issue might be the aging quality of the ink over time. Otherwise I find brush is the best. I'm enjoying AQUA elite, it's not as sensitive as the series 7, but it holds a lot of ink, and because it's stiffer, is easier to make consistant long lines and it's a lot cheaper when you buy them in bulk from ebay(not even sure if it's authentic lol)
I suggest you check out Dr. Ph Martins black inks, particularly the black star matte and the HI-Carb black star. They're some of the best I've used. I also second the Zebra G nibs and Tachikawa holders (who knew a holder could make a difference?). Maybe the Deleter 4 black ink as well. The kuretake manga ink (not the sumi) is supposed to be good but it doesn't seem as opaque as some of the other options. Otherwise, it looks like you already have a lot of the best. I'm also a fan of rapidograph universal and ultradraw ink but it looks like you already have some. I'd check out jetpens and dickblick if you haven't already - they've often got some of the best deals and selection, even beating Michaels coupons. Blick's inhouse black cat india ink is a great economy ink as well though I kind of doubt you'll ever finish that Speedball one which is what it compares to.
I have all of that Nick Manabat Cybernary as I thoroughly enjoyed Deathblow. Printing that in Black & White is awesome, looks much better than the color version in the comic, the colors were so muddy and dark.
Rotring Isograph, the .25, is available on Amazon for less than $20. I don’t know what’s expensive or inexpensive to you. Amazon also has Rotring Isograph sets of 3 or 4 sizes, with their ink.
That Nick Manabat book is amazing. I have that 1st issue he did on Cybernary. I have to say the colors did not give it any justice. A lot of detaile was lost. Looking at it in black and white is a whole other story. Thanks for sharing. I need to get my hands on that book.
Awesome vid as always! I really would love to hear more about your preferences in opaque white inks. Ive been using gouache and Dr martins, but the Martins sometimes is a gunky mess or a solid block. I have trouble adding water and getting the consistency i need. Also gel pens and white markers (I.e. Posca)? Would love to know your thoughts on this, as there doesnt seems to be alot of info on the subject. And as ive found with my own work, theres alot that can go horribly, horribly wrong hahaha. Thanks again, Rich!
This was really helpful thank you! New sub here :) I’d love to see what you might do with Mont Blanc Oyester gray ink. I’ve seen some people doing ink washes with it and it looks pretty cool
You kept saying "oh point one" (0.1) was your go to multiliner at the beginning of the video but you were showing the "point oh one" (.01) for clarification which one of those is your go-to pen? Thanks for showing us your tools.
The pen I use is the 0.1 for copic multiliner. The micron is 01 or 005. The other brand had slightly different numbering and also were different sizes based on a few of their pens were sold out at the show
Man, about drawing materials. Thre's something I've been asking around but so far nobody could answer. There's this video of Neal Adams sketching Dead Man in which he talks about Stan Drake and a 290 pen point. I can't find anything about this 290 pen to save my life
I'm curious as to how you feel about the G-Pen nib, and the maru nibs. I feel like they have been easier to use than the Hunt versions, especially the maru nib. but you have WAY more experience...so how you YOU feel ? And thank you for that last part. Too much hating going on. Like why make videos about how you dislike something ? Life is too short for that.
@@RichardFriendartist I don't want to ruin your expectations so I wont say what I don't like about them, you'll figure out the first time you write them on paper.
Wow look at all that ink suplies. Man i am jelly. I am new at inking and I,ve never done it before. I have bought a big bottle of talents india ink from amazone i also have bombay india ink and daler rowney acrylic inkt and i have neon acryl ink. I wanna see whitch ink i prefure. I have bought a dipin pen whit diffirent nibs and i wanna use brushes wen i am doing washes of ink. So i am prepard for inktober. I don,t wanna use micron pens. Cause i had similar pens wen i was 16 and i started drawing. I dind,t like it. I can,t rember the name of the pen but it look like a micron pen only a diffrent brand. The best buy for inktober in my opinon is my dip pen whit diffirent nibs. I love that pen so mutch
How are you a inker and DONT have/use Higgans Black Magic ink?!?!! Its "cheap", dried super fast, deep dark matte black, waterproof right away......I mean come on. I even use it to refill my pentel pocket brush and ever had a problem until year 3 but im not even mad as my tip was wore out anyway. Higgins Eternal, caligraphy, fountain pen ink, drawing ink and others are all super high quality ink depending on what you want to do with your ink.

Those Holbein white airbrush paints are discontinued in Europe, wonder if they're sold out in the US as well.
@@aquadias they are still available. They discontinued the aero flash header. And now call it 'acrylic ink' It's originally made in Japan.

The Zebra Brush Pens are hands down my favorite brush pen to use. Very easy to control your lines with those.

Solid video, Rich. You have such an endearing personality and in a way, you're sorta innocent... "I think this is called a fountain pen?" *lol*
You have to try the Copic opaque white ink & also the Kurutake no 40 sable brush pen...it’s a little pricey but well worth it...
