I am so weary of reading the pedestrian criticism leveled at Carreras and his supposed decline. Of course, it is valid to give considered criticism, but too rarely do I read recognition of this man's enormous talent, dedication, and humanitarianism. The juggernaut he helped develop, that of The Three Tenors, blew open the doors to an art form many people had not thought belonged to them. He has lived a life of art, put it in service to others, and remains indefatigable. He is one of the world's great tenors.
Carreras is fantastic here AND Baltsa is in good voice and certainly acts her parts. Thanks for uploading this concert, which I have never seen before.
Even if the Carmen duet is truncated there is such a feeling of Don Jose and Carmen being in the grip of something neither of them can control. My favourite is the Cavalleria where Baltsa is an overwhelming Santuzza - one of her best roles- Carreras sings Turridu with passion and such a sense of line. They may have had better days vocally than this, but their vocal and physical engagement combined is worth the price of a ticket alone! Thank you for posting this.
Thanks for giving me the chance to experience this precious moment which I can never go back to. Sad to be born in 1990s, I'm craving to find and feel all the treasures of the past. With their full-hearted voice, I can feel my heart beating fiercely. Thanks for uploading the video. It wakes this indescribable passion, emotional sensation and inspiration in my mind.
Whatever people may think of these two singers, myself included, they have the vocal-power to sing w / o microphones ! _Today, w / many singers, that ain't so ..._ _( The audience is sooo appreciative ! They had a good time. )_
Most of this rep is beyond. Watch the Carmen with the two of them. By then there was so little vibrancy in his voice that he had to shake his torso. I heard him in 77 in a Boheme. What honey! What sincere emotion. After that it went downhill and not all because of his illness.
+Paul Goulet I would be a little less conservative and say he started to decline in 1979. But even so he has always been a joy to watch perform even after he was taken ill by Cancer.
That might be because she would be using her whole voice, developed and with balanced registers, instead of using one type of sound production over the other.
I saw them both on stage in Carmen at the Met and though they were both past their vocal primes, it was an exciting performance. One of the best Carmens I've ever seen.
Not that Carreras is bad, but he is always trying to embellish the rose! Baltsa draws out the nastier sides of her characters. Casting them together is a mismatch. As MadonnaImperia remarked: They don't look at each other! Carreras is a ham - and Baltsa is mustard. But something has happened between them - I don't know what, but it ended badly..... A weird concert!!! ....the aria from Cenerentolla could indicate, that Baltsa is ready to bury the hatchet. It is repertoire, so it can be arranged quickly .... ... the last duet: Pardon my French: He "supplies" and she answeres "...Toute c'est fini, jamais te mentie...." ... "entre nous tu se fidie..." " .,,, je ne decerne pas..." As far, as I can hear he is putting the aria upside down according to her. He is being melodramatic about it!
Jose ,great natural voice as a gift , but no technique ,imitating the open sounds of Di Stefano. Agnes ,short soprano ,indifferent color ,powerfull volume ,great intelligence , personallity +presence , blending chest in a way that doesn't harm the whole placement. I don't like her ,but I appreciate her intelligence
Baltsa is amazing and in great vocal shape. Carreras is her best partner ever. What precious moment Buenos Aires had! ❤
Say whatever you want but to have seen their Carmen in full production was one of the greatest experiences of my life!
Totally agree. I had the same honour!!!!!
Yes, I say the same.

How I adore them both! What a Night at the Opera! I couldn't take my eyes off the screen for an hour. Bravi!
No longer can find singers sing like them. What a shame!
Baltsa is one of the greatest operatic artists in history, period. divine.
Yes, totaly agree.
She’s like a lightning bolt when she’s on the stage……I really miss that sort of “athleticism” in opera.
Grandissimi Artisti
I am so glad I am not an expert and can just enjoy this. Most of the audience cannot be experts either given the warmth of the applause
Harikasınız Agnes ve Jose! .. 🎻🙏
Carreras is fantastic here AND Baltsa is in good voice and certainly acts her parts. Thanks for uploading this concert, which I have never seen before.
Love them both!

What a great couple! Bravoooooooooooooooooooo
My favorite opera couple
Carreras um potencial de voz espetacular. Baltsa maravilhosa👏💯
They were great together. Love their operas!

I saw them both at Convent Garden in Samson and Delilah which was amazing
Excelente apresentação !!!❤
I love Agnes Baltsa
+Arnaldo Ribeiro Me too!!!
Me, too! Unfortunately I've never seen her in live performance, so pity.
1986 Argentina Buenos Aires
We love you Carreras
Baltsa was the best operatic merchant.
Holding a chicken, she's able to make you believe ,that she's selling you a swan.
Or...she is so crazy good that she coul play a phone book that it would be amazing! :))
Thank you very much for uploading!
Do you have more videos of Jose Carreras? Thanks for the upload
Carreras molto bravo , bellissima voce declinata troppo presto per i vari repertori nn adatti
Grande tenor!
There is something wrong with this recording. Surely the violins didn't sound that squeaky?
Carreras, the best!!!!
So strange, how they don't look at each other while duetting.
MadonnaImperia Did you look closely at the video? Of course they do
Oh, they do. Watch again! ;-)
I love a vulgar Carmen the more the better

Carreras molto bravo , bellissima voce purtroppo declinata troppo presto per i vari repertori nn adatti
Y Horne!
Così è come si fa...

I love Baltsa even if she sounds like a drag queen sometimes.
That might be because she would be using her whole voice, developed and with balanced registers, instead of using one type of sound production over the other.
Triste comentario.
@@lucasdebevec8581 Pero real.
Berganza y Baltsa....y basta!
God, Baltsa's Carmen is soooo vulgar!
Raphaël Pisano Carmen was a pretty nasty broad...pretty vulgar! Great isn't it?
I saw them both on stage in Carmen at the Met and though they were both past their vocal primes, it was an exciting performance. One of the best Carmens I've ever seen.
Tom Salmon Carmen WAS a vulgar gypsy... Anything different would not be authentic
Marcela castaño Precisely!
She is as much a psycopath as Don Giovanni.
Marcela castaño And it is such a nice role for the soprano - she can perform in bare feet and out of highheeled shoes.

Thomas Borgsmidt I don't see that at all. If anything, Carreras is too reserved. He hardly moves during the duets.
Precise! He is in for a slug with that expression on her face.
Especially, as he normally has his left arm around the soprano - if she'll let him.
I had the same feeling.
Jose ,great natural voice as a gift , but no technique ,imitating the open sounds of Di Stefano.

I hate Baltsas „singing“ its an Duckvoice
You have so many other options
And I hate your English.
