There is this amazing band called "Steel Panther", that I have never seen any vocal coach proffesionally analysed. Would be awesome to someday see it on your channel ;) Here's song suggestion from live performence, the video on youtube is called: "Steel Panther - "The British Invasion" Teaser #1 "Party All Day"", where British Invasion is name of the concert, Party all day is name of the song, so it's not song teaser, it's concert teaser with full song in the video. They are heavily influenced by bands like Def Leppard, Van Halen etc ;)
Rick Allen designed that drum kit himself after his accident where he lost his arm. The story is so inspiring. Amid severe depression and suicidal thoughts at the realization that he would never play drums again, he determined that he wasn't going to give up. He designed and had his own, one-of-a-kind drum kit built and went on to become one of the most iconic rock drummers of all time. Also, not only this song, but their whole album "Hysteria" was huge and still is one of the best rock albums of all time.
I was at Ricks first gig back after the accident on the Snake Pass in 84. It was just a small gathering of only 75,000 at Castle Donington for Monster Of Rock festival in 1986 and it was awesome. Saw them loads of times before then and have always been an awesome band live.
Hysteria was Def Leppard at the height of their musical powers. I saw them on the tour this album and it was the last time that I saw Steve Clark live. RIP Steve.
RIck Allen controls a series of pedals with his left foot to do what he'd normally do with his left hand. It's truly impressive. What's also impressive is that his band mates stood by him and supported him in his decision to want to continue, no matter how hard it was. It's such in inspirational story. Small side note, original guitarist Steve Clark was still in the band here, Viv Campbell (who was Dio's original guitarist) replaced him after his sad death in 1991...
We can certainly talk about their great musical abilities, but that the band chose to put a halt to their work and careers, and told Rick Allen that they would wait for his recovery is exceptional. That’s character. That’s love. No one knew if he would be able to play and yet they made the choice for their friend.
@@lordmortarius538 The most underrated album is by far 'Slang' with songs such as 'All I Want Is Everything', 'Breathe a Sigh' and 'Where Does Love Go When It Dies'. Another favourite of mine and most people either forget or do not know of, is 'Goodbye'
These guys are still touring. As a matter of fact, my hubby just bought us 2 tickets to see them along with Journey, Steve Miller Band, Heart and Cheap Trick next summer and I'm so excited. I've seen them 10 times in the last 20 years and Def Leppard never disappoints. They always put on the best show.
Still going strong, just saw them on the Motley Crue farewell tour. They blew MC off the stage, they sounded so good still. They also just released a new album.
They did the same thing when I saw them open for Billy Squier in 1982. They were basically unknowns and had just finished up Pyromania, but it hadn't been released yet. They blew Squier off the stage and won over the crowd!
@@caoimhinjpnlevel3552 Truer words have never been written. LOL I saw DL and MC twice on this past tour. Vince was pretty good the first time. But holy crap did he suck the second time. It was bad. They're coming around again this year and I decided I don't want to pay that much money (I always go for the good seats) to see MC again. I'll sit this one out.
I'd say the next Def Leppard song to check out is Bringin On The Heartbreak from High N Dry, It's one of the first true power ballads and it's surprisingly dark and heavy for one.
Hearbreak always gives me shivers!!!!! HnD is their best albums if you ask me, Love Bites is also another great song, the best one on Hysteria if you ask me! I remember telling my friends about that song after my first listen and they were like whatever...... 6 months after they all come up to me saying that this new single from Hysteria is so awesome... when asked they told me it was Love Bites hahahaha
Bringin On The Heartbreak and Too Late For Love have always been two of my favorites.... Foolin, Photograph, Lady Strange, Love Bites... Def Leppard's music was always big, fun, indulgent, escapism to me. My all-time favorite band. By the way, Pour Some Sugar On Me was inspired by Sugar Sugar by the Archies.
Def Leppard is one of the most fascinating bands to follow the story of. I was born in 83, and this was by far my favorite band growing up. If you've ever seen a VH1 Behind the Music, Def Leppard is the best to watch. Their story was so good that VH1 made a movie about it, and it should honestly get a professional Hollywood release. You wouldn't even need to alter the story because of how crazy their story truly is. The drummer alone. It's not that he was just a one arm drummer. He became a star after the album Pyromania, he had two arms at that point. Had a terrible accident, lost his arm, and then went on to record one of the most iconic albums of all time.
@@bml33 Yep - It's his vocal with Joe's in the cascade bit (Love, love, love bites, love bleeds...) towards the end of the song and his does the intro and outro speaking vocal as well "If you have love in your sights..." He lends his vocal to a few other songs of Def Leppard's as well.
It's brilliantly produced, it absolutely has that chorus you almost have to sing along with, and it shows off the rock star swagger that bands that are at their peak have. If you had to try to explain rock to someone who had never heard music before, this would be a great example of what rock can be. I'm not even an especially big fan of Def Leppard (I fell in love with the genre during the grunge era), but this is just undeniably iconic.
If you really want to see Joe's shift from a mix to a full falsetto, check out "Bringing on the Heartbreak." Not so much grit involved, and I don't think he ever goes full chest voice, but the falsetto is... um... top notch...
@@Nissardpertugiu In the verses, no. In the choruses, parts are, thus the shift I mentioned from a mixed voice to a falsetto. The only way I can make it work is to shift up past head voice to falsetto. Definitely not comparing myself to Joe Elliott by any means, but I figure if that's how I'm doing it, and that's what I'm hearing, then he's probably doing something similar, though definitely more skilled than I'm able to.
The song that first hooked me into Def Leppard was Bringin' On The Heartbreak. There's something really advanced about it for its time and still plays well today.
I will always be a fan of Def Leppard. Not only is their music great but the fact that, during the height of their popularity, they put everything on hold while their drummer re-learned how to play the drums after losing an arm in an accident. It's unheard of in modern times to see a band have that kind of loyalty to a member. Any other band would have simply replaced him and moved on making more big money. I was so, so happy to see their success picked up right where it left off when they returned. Props to everyone in the band for being patient and keeping the big picture in focus.
As far as I know they didn't really stop writing or anything, they just kinda did their parts without him. That said they weren't getting much done anyways, they were cycling through a bunch of different producers and eventually ended up with Mutt Lange returning again. But yeah, they were never gonna kick him out, they didn't know if he was gonna return but they felt that was his decision, he felt he could still play drums then he was welcome back, bunch of stand-up guys and good friends.
In this video the second guitarist was Steve Clarke (long blonde hair). Campbell was brought in to replace him after he passed in the early 90s. You'll enjoy knowing that Vivian Campbell was Dio's original guitarist for his solo career.
Thank you! I was so happy to see a Def Leppard song! They've always made a point to include vocal harmonies in their songs. And they're all such great musicians. So many good songs to analyze. Love Bites is a great ballad. Foolin' is a classic rock song. Paper Sun is not as well known, but has some very interesting cords created with the vocal harmonies.
If you want to compare how his voice has aged, they just uploaded a video of 'Sugar live in Sydney 2023. They do vocal warm ups for 2 hours before they hit the stage. Also, if you want to hear Joe Elliott's voice with little production, I suggest a song from their album Slang; perhaps 'Breathe A Sigh'. His voice is on show and pretty raw.
"Hysteria", "Foolin" and "Love Bites" are other great songs of theirs. Rick Allen, bless him, you'd never think that he was playing those drums with only one arm. Respect to him and to the others in the band for standing by him through it all. They're definitely an inspiration of support, family and friendship.💖
I listen to every genre that's existed from now through 100 years ago, and "Photograph" by Def Leppard is one of my most favorite 80s songs of all time; and I don't even know why - because I don't particularly enjoy Def Leppard in general - but maybe your professional mind would be able to identify what's so good about it
I like them more than you, but I totally get what you mean. Photograph and Love Bites were what got me into them and I think they have a commonality in the chorus harmonies.
You know the whole enjoyment is just an idea. If you enjoy a song and it's entire performance and composition, well I think you like the band. Like some epic bands come to mind and their lives may not be the greatest ir later albums. But I feel like Def Leppard is almost kinda like a new discovery for me that's mow stood the test of time whereas just a few other "hair" bands may just be nostalgic if you play them right now, like Skid Row or Poison.
Photograph follows an opposite model than many other rock songs. It’s hard, heavy verses but a slow and pretty-sounding chorus. I’m sure Elizabeth can explain it better than I can.
More Def Leppard please! Loved the reaction. Such a huge catalog to choose from but a few of my favorites are. " Love bites" "Photograph" "Rock of Ages" "Animal". You won't be disappointed really with anything from them.
As someone who grew up with this band, they were my neighbors and drinking buddies. They will always hold a special place in my heart. Even you, Phil - Southern lad!
I'm not a huge DL fan but I worked for them many, many times and those backup vocals they recreate to perfection live. No backing tracks or added tracks. Its all them and it is INSANE to hear live.
I saw them in 2017 on the second night of rockville - jacksonville - I'm sorry but in my opinion they blew away soundgarden from the night before...and basically everyone!! Gonna try to see the DL / Journey tour next year
@@dr.floridamanphd "Vince Neal isn’t even intelligible when performing live" Funny you say that. Reminds me of when I went to see Aerosmith (in Tacoma, WA, IIRC) and Skid Row was opening. AWESOME!!, right? Well, not a single word during their entire set was intelligible. I didn't even know which songs where which. I assumed they were coked out of their minds and was a sign of what was to come next. Was it a waste of time driving 5+ hours to watch this concert? Aerosmith came out and was fannnnnnnntastic. Perfection. And Steven Tyler was amazing out doing this cartwheel insanity on stage. Complete black & white difference between the two bands. Rock stars and rank amateurs. I don't care how many hits Skid Row has - they proved to me they were nobodies in the land of rock whereas Aerosmith were consummate professionals. Don't think I ever got to see the Crue live. Hopefully they were better than Skid Row.
Joe Elliott, and the whole band sound just as good live today as they sounded in the studio in the 80's. These guys are ABSOLUTE pros, and kill it live.
saw them a few years ago in NH, they wouldn't going as high as they were in the 80's, but they still sounded amazing. Will see them next Aug at Fenway Park.
💯 I just saw them again (5th Def Leppard concert) in August in Tulsa along with Alice Cooper & Motley Crue & it was an awesome concert start to finish! And this song was the finale!!! Whole stadium went crazy just like in the 80's!!! ❤🔥
They sound just as good live today as they sounded in the studio in the 80s? 🤨 Holy hyperbole on horse steroids, Batman! They must be doing something different at their regular shows because I saw them on Jimmy Kimmel not long ago and they didn't come close to living up to your claim. 🤣
I highly recommend two steps behind. It's a ballad but you can definitely see more of Joe Eliot's versatility. A wonderful song with more amazing backing vocals.
Absolutely, without a doubt, Love Bites, should be the next song from the same album. Those of us around in our teens who had this album wore out actual cassette tapes of Hysteria by the box load. It was the anthem of our generation and continues to be just as powerful as it was nearly 37 years ago, from beginning to end.
Rock of Ages. Foolin’. Photograph. You can’t go wrong with any song you pick. They’re all great and just as epic. I got to see them with AC/DC in the late 90’s-ish (I think) and they were amazing. The live experience is something else.
I saw them twice 1st time opened for Ozzie Blizzard of Oz tour. Nobody knew who they were. it was their High and Dry album Bringing on the Heart Break. Great show.
Seen the several times in the 2000s. Still put on one hell of a show. They just know how to play to a crowd and this song specifically engages the crowd on so many levels.
Def Leppard fan here. Seeing them is definitely is an experience. They put on a great show. You just picked a serious rabbit hole to dive into. Yes, the harmonies are theirs and they still can do the harmonies to this day. Rick Allen is our Thunder God.
Having had great success with AC/DC on the one-two punch of Highway to Hell and Back in Black, Mutt Lange was able to bottle lightning again with both Pyromania and Hysteria.
At the time, it was Steve Clark, not Vivian Campbell. I see lots of people talk about how they put everything on hold when Rick Allen lost his arm. They also put everything on hold to encourage Clark into rehab. Ultimately, his addictions killed him after rehab, but unlike so many bands that throw a guy like that out when he starts being unreliable, they stood by him and did everything friends could to try to get him help. Vivian Campbell was Clark's replacement after he died.
It is kind of amazing how well this band has stuck together through everything. How well they stood behind Rick, and tried so hard to help Steve (I've seen interviews where they discuss how much it hurt them that they just couldn't be enough help for him). Then since Viv came in, they've really made him "part of the family" instead of "the new guy".
I was at a Def Leppard Concert a few years ago (before Covid) and they had asked Viv if there was a song he wanted to play that wasn't on their normal list. He asked for Switch 365, which is an awesome song. They were also teasing him that he was 'the new guy' but he had been with the band for 17 years at that point. Def Leppard is an awesome band that just supports each other so well.
Yes, Steve died 5 months later after being diagnosed. As a guitarist, I learned alot of chops from both Steve and Phil. I'm 57, still play those covers, but it makes the 80s live within me. I hate it when we lose musicians like them and many others to their demises. Today, if they were alive, they'd be the greatest of the greatest. Ah! just did some research! Not German subtitles--Norweigan! Still, it's in English. Check it out, man--geat documenatry movie, characters are spot-on, and story is correct--no fake/edited shit.
Def Leppard is still touring. You should check their 2024 schedule and if a concert is close to you, I highly suggest you go see it. You will absolutely be glad you did. This is a chance to get an experience as to what 80s stadium rock was like. You mentioned the energy in their performance, you will feel it in person and I guarantee you'll be singing along when this song come on! Ready for the bonus? Journey is joining their tour as well. Granted, without Steve Perry, but they still are jamming.
My wife and i went to see def leppard. I wasnt a big fan but she really was. But after that show i really became one!!! They sounded even better live!! Thats pretty rare ive seen 100s if not 1000s of bands live in my 55 years of life and without a doubt they are in my top 10 best live acts of all times. Im glad i went and had a great time with the love of my life!!! A night i will remember forever!!!
Your story reminded me a little bit about my relationship with my wife. She was a big Queen fan, and though I wasn't, she got me hugely into it. Freddy Mercury has long since passed, but there are still new fans being born every day.
Huge tesla fan here as well! I really think elizabeth would absolutely dig them! I didn't get to see Def Lep until 2006 co headlining with poison and cheap trick.all 3 bands were fantastic but I will say I enjoyed Lep the most.they were just way more tighter music wise
Saw this tour when I was in my last year of high school in Fresno, CA ... inspirational story with regards to Allen (having the entire band state that they wouldn't replace him, and would hang it up if Rick didn't want to come back), as well as a phenomenal stage show that put Allen CENTER FORWARD on a revolving drumkit raised above the rest of the stage. There was an "intermission" of sorts when the rest of the band took a 5-10 min break whilst Rick rocked out on his kit, showing everyone that -- even minus an arm -- he was to be counted one of the best in the business. Epic memory
Normally, I don't like electronic drums, but they are what enabled Rick to keep playing drums after his accident. Major respect to Rick for having to adapt and relearn his instrument after already playing at a professional level! I also second checking out Bringing on the Heartbreak. One of my favorite power ballads ever
On his last day at his "day job" before becoming a full time musician, Tony Iomi cut the tips of the fingers on his left hand off. Took him some time to come back. When he finally started playing again, he down-tuned the guitar to reduce the tension on the strings and make it less painful. Geezer down-tuned to match, and the rest is history. AC/DC's "Night Prowler" is basically a Sabbath tribute, and they down-tuned for that one.
i agree, this was a necessary engineering solution, normally as a drummer i dont like to much help for the drummers, but this is ok. I am glad he can still do one of the most fun things u can do in life...Play music
These guys are the classiest bunch of rockers that has ever been. They were on a roll when their drummer lost his arm, and instead of replacing him, they stuck with him. Their reward for the good deed was the electronic percussion track that gave this album the punch and distinction that set it apart. My hat’s off to them ❤!❤
if you're still wondering about how they sound now, they still sound every bit as good. I had a number of opportunities to see them live but for 1 reason or another I never did until 6 months ago when they played in Scotland and I saw them for first time and straight away put them in my top 3 best gigs I've ever been to they were amazing :)
Saw them on July 9th, 1988 in Bloomington, MN. Seats were top row of the Met Center. Ears were ringing for 3 days. What a magical night. Best concert I've been to.
Steve Clark was the original lead guitarist who died of overdose a few years after this album. Vivian Campbell is their current lead guy. Also, he was Dio's guitar player on his first 2 solo albums
I was about to comment the same. Steve Clark is one of those real rock and roll tragedies. The band definitely has faced a lot between Rick's accident and Steve's passing.
Phil Collen is lead guitar for Def Leppard … he and Steve shared the lead when Steve was around, with Steve having a more “wild” style and Phil being more technical. Vivian, who is awesome, plays mostly rhythm and takes some lead, but the man is definitely Phil.
@@Peanutbutterb00b5 There is some evidence I would say that Def Leppard lost more than just a little bit of their songwriting "umpf" when Clark passed away. They still made some great music, but never really approached the same degree of genius they did with Clark in the band, unfortunately.
@@Peanutbutterb00b5 That's ridiculous if it's true. Vivian used to be one of the best lead guitarists in rock. He could play circles around Phil Collen. Can you imagine Collen playing the Rainbow In The Dark solo or the solo in Don't Talk To Strangers? I don't think so!
One of my fav bands! Saw them live this past August and they still sound great. Joe's voice still more than held up. I recommend "Animal" , "Hysteria" , "Rocket" , and their cover of "Personal Jesus."
Bringing on the heart ache was one of their early songs. Late 70's early 80's when they were still in their teens. It would provide you an insight to how the band progressed over time. Pluss just about anything of the hysteria album. A lot of the song I saw being mentioned are good too.
“Photograph” and “Bringing on the Heartbreak” and “Hysteria” would all be excellent choices, as others have suggested, but … “Too Late for Love” is an incredible song. Thank you for taking a closer look at these guys who are still doing amazing tours again in 2024.
So much Queen in here, you're right! They're huge Queen fans and when they were recently inducted to the RnR Hall of Fame, Queen's legendary guitarist Brian May did the honors. My first concert (in '87) and my absolute favorite band! So great in concert (even today) and so many great Def Leppard songs you can jump into. Photograph, Women, Desert Song, Hysteria, Bringin' on the Heartbreak… just so many great songs across the decades. And great musicians. RIP Steve Clark 🎸
I was at this concert in the mid 80's as a teenager in Denver and that is where they shot a lot of the video. They were every bit talented and it was truly the last era of bands. Rock, R&B and everything in between had a band. When they say hair bands of the 80's, it was about those 2 things, the unique hairstyles, long or short but puffy and curls and the bands.
Def Leppard is the definition of Arena Rock. There is none better. Wanting to sing along with the band and everyone in the arena in a huge good time party feeling is EXACTLY what Arena Rock is all about.
lets just say thank you Mutt, how many bands owe everything to him and the hits he produced through the years is insane. Always liked them and they were hard to avoid on FM & AM for a decade. They did move in the rock power ballad groove and did it well, but lets do the party instead- Lets Get Rocked, Armageddon It, Animal!!, Foolin, Photograph, I could add a dozen more - very listenable. Hats off to the band for standing with their brother in rock n roll while he designed and relearned how to play the drum kit post accident, they hooked me at that moment and stuck with them going forward after that choice.
Its amazing that when you look at DefLep's record catalog and see which ones Mutt produced you can see that when he left, they fell off a cliff. When he came back, they were on top.
@@bml33 It wasn't just Mutt that made the difference in this band. It was Steve Clark's guitar genius. After he died their music was never the same. She doesn't mention Steve at all. Instead, she mentions Viv Campbell, who isn't even in the band at that time or in the video.
@@ostlandr Well if they hated it back then they certainly don't now....they seem to have a great time playing those songs today! Its the biggest money maker of their career!
This was recorded at McNicols Arena in Denver Colorado. I was a coach driver on that tour with them then. The Def Leppard video was all recorded at Mc Nicols then.
Saw them last summer and they sounded GREAT. Joe Elliot had to pick his spots to really go high, as many of the older tunes are up there, but it was a GREAT show start to finish.
The way I picture the late 70s rock and 80s hair metal is the perfect soundtrack to the “All-American, party animal, thrill seeker” stereotype. Think the popular kids (although obv everyone probably liked it) and that’s why in the 90s we got the “Teenage Dirtbag” type songs which resonated more with the outcast and brooding side of teens more.
Their voices stood the test of times very well. If you watch recent live videos you will be astonished how great their vocal performances still are after all those years.
I saw them live about ten years ago and Joe's voice wasn't as good as on the recorded albums, but it wasn't as badly aged as some I've experienced live (Jethro Tull and Deep Purple in the 2000s were suboptimal). I'd see them again.
You saying the drums hit hard made me smile ear to ear. The drummer, rick allen, lost an arm in a car wreck. He has a custom built kit with pedals to replace what his missing arm would play. And yes, he still is the drummer for the band today. Your analysis is always incredible.
It took me years and years to finally appreciate what it is Def Leppard does so well. Back in the 80s I resented that these guys were on every waking second of MTV during the day and also they would milk their videos on The Headbangers ball when in reality it was basically kind of sing along Hard Rock. And all I wanted was megadeth, King diamond, cro-mags, nuclear soul, whatever beautiful thrash was popping off in those times but was completely overshadowed by the mainstream sing-along stuff. Anyway once I got over that Grudge it's hard to deny the Def Leppard have stood the test of time and are good songwriters. They understand how to please an arena full of happy people and that's a good thing. Do I find anything of particularly inspiring and what they do? No. Never have. But, at least now I understand now genuinely talented they are
"it's hard to deny the Def Leppard have stood the test of time and are good songwriters." you should check out Mutt Lange's other songs on records by ADCC and Tania Shwain. In other words, it is easy to deny they are good songwriters. They are garbage; it is too bad the rest of the band didn't go to the bar with Steve Clark that night in Minneapolis.
Can't say enough good things about these guys. Despite all that life has thrown at them, they've never lost their passion for everything about the biz. This album was a milestone in so many ways and a masterpiece. Check out "Love Bites" for some great vocals and harmonies.🤘
This was one of those bands that I have a love affair with in middle school. The time period where we took the cassette and played it and stopped it continually and wrote down all the words! Still no the all! Love bites Will forever be my favorite.
Not a huge Def Leppard fan, but this is just the quintessential "Arena Rock" song. This and We Will Rock You - not only do they share similarities in the rhythm, as you mentioned, but also an over-the-top grandeur that'll basically FORCE people to clap along. Like, it's damn near impossible not to at least nod your head or stamp your feet or something, even if you're not full-on bawling along with the chorus
Great song choice!! I saw Def Lep last year and they still pulled that song off like it was recorded yesterday. Their harmonies are always amazing, as well. The song Hysteria has my vote for the next video. Thank you!😘
Hysteria was the very first album I ever heard on CD back in '87. And to this day, I believe it to be one of the very few perfect albums. The cover art is also iconic and instantly recognisable.
Very Good. Not "perfect." Both: High 'n' Dry and (their debut) On Through The Night are far better, stronger and even more cohesive, albums. ...but I am only saying this COMPARATIVELY! Hysteria is a perfect representation of: what the '80s became and is, often, unfairly, misunderstood/dismissed. It has plenty of great songs and it exploits the then-current, then-new technology, to the "Nth" degree and does it: wisely, musically, attractively. 🤘🤘
So glad you finally did a Def Leppard song!! My absolute favorite 80's band (well, them, Van Halen, and Aerosmith). Great catch in noticing the Queen influence. Queen were one of their biggest influences, and many people have labeled Leppard's sound as, AC/DC meets Queen. You've gotta do Live Bites next, or Hysteria or Animal.
I was at this concert in Baltimore back in 1986. Out of the 25 or so rock concerts I've been to, it had the best quality sound. They played and sang almost exactly like the studio album. It was just plain simply put... amazing. Best concert I've ever been to. It wasn't a runner-up, but the best. Everything about it exceeded my expectations. He was dress in the same clothes seen in this video. I was 6 rows back from the front of one of the sides of the 4-sided stage. Incredible view. Incredible sound. I was so close I could see the whites of his eyes.
Def Leppard does a lot of the call and response singing, and Hysteria is one of my favorites for that reason. It's also a great showcase for the vocal range and how much control Joe has over his instrument.
i think people got snobby about Hair Metal & it kinda became ridiculed & a bit of a joke which is disappointing because there are some amazing groups from this era .
I look at it a lot like how ABBA was treated. Just because you're making stuff that doesn't sound overly complex and is just a fun time doesn't mean it doesn't take talent. I think hair metal got such a bad rap after a while because too many people latched on to the "latest thing", and a lot of bands got one hit wonders because of a cool name or look with one catchy hook. Now that time has passed and people can sift out just the ones that were good musicians with solid writing it's helped recover the reputation of the genre.
@@joeponce9053 Hysteria is litterally their only Hair metal Album, i'm not sure what Adrenalise is but it's not Glam Rock. Slang has eastern influence, Euphoria and X are mainstream rock, and at that point you're 20 years removed for Glam rock anyway
When you said the vocal sounds "beefier" and the way it has such a big or wide sound....that is all thanks to the Producer, Mutt Lange. You correctly said it makes you want to sing along. That's his trademark. He did it with AC/DC first, and many others after this. Really, one cannot overestimate the strength of Mutt Lange's contribution to the sound of the 80s. He took so many bands to the top with his sound, and then the dozens who later emulated them.
Def Leppard is still touring today. This song captures the feeling that was in the air in the 80's. They have so many great songs you should check out. "Love Bites" is a ballad, "Hysteria" is an amazing produced song, Have you Ever Needed Someone So Bad is another "ballad" about unrequited love. Theres "Animal" which sounds similar to this song. Also "Armageddon it" sounds like this one as well. They are all so great to listen to for the first time, because their producers knew what they were doing as well as the band. I'm jealous you get to experience all these great songs for the first time in your adulthood
Elizabeth, this video was so fun! This song was inspired by "Walk This Way", by Run DMC w/Aerosmith. That's where the snap like vocals come from. You're right that Def Leppard is an arena band. Every song is like an anthem, and they blow the roof off everytime! The reason know this, is that I saw them for 20 years straight, up til lockdown. 👋 "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" should definitely be next! So good! There are two versions, the second is a re-issue, about 2 years after " High 'n' Dry", and it sounds thick to me, so I prefer version 1. In reference, Joe's voice has matured, and he seems to be using some different techniques to accommodate that. But still great! This band is endeared for their endurance through Rick Allen's accident, Steve Clark's passing, and Viv Campbell's cancer battle, and staying together. Although, Rick Savage is the only original founding member. Sir Brian May inducted them into the R&R Hall of Fame in 2019, and Joe said that these guys are his family, especially since he's an only child. Lol They truly are a Band of Brothers. 🤘🩵
One of my favorite Def Leppard songs is "Foolin". Seen this band many times in person and grew up listening to them. This was also recorded before Rick Allen lost his arm. I'd love to see your review on this fabulous song!
Thank you for checking out these guys - they are awesome, seen them 3 times and they are great live. I would recommend “Love Bites”, Photograph or anything from Hysteria
I was at this show at McNichols arena in Denver back in '89. it was recorded over two nights. such a killer show. Tesla opened for them. Joe can't sing the high notes any longer, but they still rock it. I saw them last summer and loved it.
Looking forward to this as they are my all-time favorite band. Your next song of theirs to check out should be Love Bites for Joe's mid to high range and more melody than Sugar.
Omg had my junior high sweetheart dump me to this song... that got changed a couple of times though... we have bow been married for 12 years and known each other for over 30 years.
I am continuosly amazed by how this channel makes me reappreciate some of the songs I've listened to all my live. I always just listened to them without thinking too much about it yet this channel always makes me feel happy. To feel like there is much more quality to songs lie this then I ever truly realized.
I was at the concert where this video was filmed. It was a concert in Feb 1988 at Mcnichols arena in Denver Co. This concert was "In the Round" and the video was filmed at the end of the concert. They put on a great show.

Hey Elizabeth.
Did you notice Rick Allen the drummer. A couple of years before this was released he lost an arm in road accident.
"Welcome back to The Charismatic Meal." :)
There is this amazing band called "Steel Panther", that I have never seen any vocal coach proffesionally analysed. Would be awesome to someday see it on your channel ;)
Here's song suggestion from live performence, the video on youtube is called: "Steel Panther - "The British Invasion" Teaser #1 "Party All Day"", where British Invasion is name of the concert, Party all day is name of the song, so it's not song teaser, it's concert teaser with full song in the video.
They are heavily influenced by bands like Def Leppard, Van Halen etc ;)
@@GodlessScummer yup, they noticed in the live chat 🎉 🥁
Rick Allen designed that drum kit himself after his accident where he lost his arm. The story is so inspiring. Amid severe depression and suicidal thoughts at the realization that he would never play drums again, he determined that he wasn't going to give up. He designed and had his own, one-of-a-kind drum kit built and went on to become one of the most iconic rock drummers of all time.
Also, not only this song, but their whole album "Hysteria" was huge and still is one of the best rock albums of all time.
I give kudos to the band for keeping him as their drummer.
Seems like I heard he’d lied to them about his age to join the band or quit school, 15 at the time.
I was at Ricks first gig back after the accident on the Snake Pass in 84. It was just a small gathering of only 75,000 at Castle Donington for Monster Of Rock festival in 1986 and it was awesome. Saw them loads of times before then and have always been an awesome band live.
It’s an amazing story for sure. Dude is an inspiration to say the least. Also, Adrenalize is a killer album too.
I’m more of a Pyromania man myself
I have to recommend 'Photograph' and 'Bringing On The Heartbreak' - fantastic vocals
I concur
Good choices! I would also add 'Foolin'!
Animal and Rock of Ages are great too!
White Lightning, Die Hard the Hunter, Too Late for Love, Bringin' on the Heartbreak, Photograph and Gods of War would be my top choices
Photograph is one of the best rock songs of that era.
An extremely classy move on their part. Class like this is rarely seen in the music industry (particularlyfrom Labels).
For their Brother
Joe was very upset and let it be known when AC/DC replaced Brian Johnson with Axle Rose when Brian was going through his vocal problems.
I'm going to join the chorus for "Photograph". It's a great song, and really shows off Joe's voice.
Foolin', Bringin' on the Heartbreak, and Love Bites too. Shit, the whole Hysteria album tbh
Photograph would also be my top choice if she's going to do another one of their songs but I really the the drive of Rock Brigade.
Their greatest song, without question. Arguably THE song that brought this style of music on to top 40 radio also.
Call me a weirdo, but "Jimmy's got a gun" is a favorite of mine.
I just seen that , hopefully they come to my area that would be awesome show with that line up
Lucky you! I hope you have a fantastic time. 🤟
I'm so jealous... As a 80s kid that would be an amazing lineup to see. Hope you have an amazing time ❤️
@@horseygirl645 thank you so much. I'm super excited.
@@Joreel Thank you! I can't wait!
In fairness it wouldn't be hard to blow Motley Crue off the stage nowadays 😅
@@caoimhinjpnlevel3552 Truer words have never been written. LOL I saw DL and MC twice on this past tour. Vince was pretty good the first time. But holy crap did he suck the second time. It was bad. They're coming around again this year and I decided I don't want to pay that much money (I always go for the good seats) to see MC again. I'll sit this one out.
I think you would enjoy "love bites" by them, the voice is amazing on that one.
I agree. "Love Bites" is my favorite of theirs.
Although there is a rare version with Vivian and the ending is just an experience.
Love bites is one of my all time favorite songs ever!!
Yes yes yes yes
I agree... Also love Animal
I'd say the next Def Leppard song to check out is Bringin On The Heartbreak from High N Dry, It's one of the first true power ballads and it's surprisingly dark and heavy for one.
Seconded
Agree! "Sugar" is a fun song but I know it has always been a favorite of strippers and I think it's over played. Photograph is a great song too.
MIRROR, MIRROR LOOK INTO MY EYES.
@@jaredbaratta8589 I second this actually.
Lady Strange. Flashback for sure. Mirror Mirror is also a cool song that's been forgotten.
Must do Def Lep's "Love Bites" - Joe's voice is simply amazing and the backing vocals are fantastic. Another brilliant arrangement by Mutt Lange
Everything Mutt Lange touched in the 80s turned to gold. His resume includes all the biggest rock hits of the 80s.
Love Bites is one of the great rock ballads of all time
@@tommacari4103 Mutt was not only the Producer, but also credited as songwriter along with the band on Love Bites.
too true!!@@bml33
@@bml33 Yep - It's his vocal with Joe's in the cascade bit (Love, love, love bites, love bleeds...) towards the end of the song and his does the intro and outro speaking vocal as well "If you have love in your sights..." He lends his vocal to a few other songs of Def Leppard's as well.
Back in 88, you couldn’t exist as a teenager without hearing this song pretty much once an hour (or more) for months!
And you couldn't go to a strip joint without hearing it played several times a day.
Word... It was relentless over the airwaves & Everywhere else.
And it's been that way for 35 years... just as god intended.
It still get play all the time on rock radio, its almost a victim of its own success, sure its overplayed, but its also a damn good song.
If you have never experienced this live you’ve missed out, the venue goes absolutely insane when this song starts, every time.
From an interview, I think Joe Elliot said that the song was about, "whatever your kink happens to be".
Too Late For Love is one of their best, most underrated hits, and it shows off a lot more of Joe Elliot's vocal range.
Oh Yes.. very underrated
and a fun song to play on guitar too...
I hate the single/video edit of "Too Late..." where they badly cut that cool pedal point heavy riff, awful!
Too late is another one with great harmonies, too. (They have many)
Good call.i too agree and recommend it
If you really want to see Joe's shift from a mix to a full falsetto, check out "Bringing on the Heartbreak." Not so much grit involved, and I don't think he ever goes full chest voice, but the falsetto is... um... top notch...
Its not falsetto, in the lead vocals
bringing on the heartache is such a great song
@@Nissardpertugiu In the verses, no. In the choruses, parts are, thus the shift I mentioned from a mixed voice to a falsetto. The only way I can make it work is to shift up past head voice to falsetto. Definitely not comparing myself to Joe Elliott by any means, but I figure if that's how I'm doing it, and that's what I'm hearing, then he's probably doing something similar, though definitely more skilled than I'm able to.
I think Love Bites is a great example of Joe's vocals ! 👌
The song that first hooked me into Def Leppard was Bringin' On The Heartbreak. There's something really advanced about it for its time and still plays well today.
Agreed.❤
I will always be a fan of Def Leppard. Not only is their music great but the fact that, during the height of their popularity, they put everything on hold while their drummer re-learned how to play the drums after losing an arm in an accident. It's unheard of in modern times to see a band have that kind of loyalty to a member. Any other band would have simply replaced him and moved on making more big money. I was so, so happy to see their success picked up right where it left off when they returned. Props to everyone in the band for being patient and keeping the big picture in focus.
Best nine-armed band ever.
And with Whitesnake with Steve Vai (that was a concert!)
Hysteria perfect choice👌🏻
I listen to every genre that's existed from now through 100 years ago, and "Photograph" by Def Leppard is one of my most favorite 80s songs of all time; and I don't even know why - because I don't particularly enjoy Def Leppard in general - but maybe your professional mind would be able to identify what's so good about it
I like them more than you, but I totally get what you mean. Photograph and Love Bites were what got me into them and I think they have a commonality in the chorus harmonies.
@@ganjiblobflankis6581 Hysteria! 🎉
My favorite Def Leppard song, too!
That’s the mark of consummate professionals.
Whereas Vince Neal isn’t even intelligible when performing live 😂
@@dr.floridamanphd the real lyrics for "Kickstart My Heart" video is awesome.
years after Vivian joined the band, he commented that the band really can and does sing backup.
I saw them in 2017 on the second night of rockville - jacksonville - I'm sorry but in my opinion they blew away soundgarden from the night before...and basically everyone!! Gonna try to see the DL / Journey tour next year

Funny you say that.
Truth! Saw them with Journey a few years ago and DL absolutely rocked the place to the ground. :)
saw them a few years ago in NH, they wouldn't going as high as they were in the 80's, but they still sounded amazing.
Holy hyperbole on horse steroids, Batman! They must be doing something different at their regular shows because I saw them on Jimmy Kimmel not long ago and they didn't come close to living up to your claim. 🤣

I love that song. Tonight and Stand Up kick into motion are very criminally underrated 😊

I'll check it out!
@@TheCharismaticVoiceas far as I know there’s several versions of this song. It’s interesting to hear the different takes.
I agree....LOVE BITES should be the next song :) .I love this album.
Rock of Ages. Foolin’. Photograph. You can’t go wrong with any song you pick. They’re all great and just as epic. I got to see them with AC/DC in the late 90’s-ish (I think) and they were amazing. The live experience is something else.
...Too late for love...

Mutt Lange...
It's definitely in the hall of fame of best albums if all time
Having had great success with AC/DC on the one-two punch of Highway to Hell and Back in Black, Mutt Lange was able to bottle lightning again with both Pyromania and Hysteria.
Seen them Two years ago live and they sound just like the albums at 60-70 years old...simply phenomenal.
Saw them live on this first tour when the drummer recovered. It was AMAZING. Open stadium, and crazy lights. Best show I have seen
Yeah that's definitely "Streamin" Steve Clark
@@staceycoates1418 It's Switch 625 which is an instrumental.
It's about time we got to some Def Leppard! One of my all time favs.
Both We Will Rock You and Pour Some Sugar On Me are very anthemic. They both have that one constant heavy beat that invites the crowd to join in
My wife and i went to see def leppard. A night i will remember forever!!!
you are very specific in your use of words, and that is a good thing. You called them a rock 'act.' Exactly.
You didn't say band.
I also saw them in this tour, Tesla was the unknown band opening for them. After the show I was a huge Tesla fan forever.
Lucky man 💕
DEF LEPPARD is an example of a band whose brotherhood is so strong.
Epic memory
'Let It Go' needs to be heard. Early Def Leppard. Joe's voice is electric!!
He actually sometimes went back to conventional at times over the years.
i agree, this was a necessary engineering solution, normally as a drummer i dont like to much help for the drummers, but this is ok. I am glad he can still do one of the most fun things u can do in life...Play music
the accident also put a hold on the recording of Hysteria and i think made it the most expensive album ever made at that time
These guys are the classiest bunch of rockers that has ever been.
I love the fact that the band waited for Rick to learn to use his new drum kit instead of finding another drummer. ❤️ That's love.! ❤❤❤
Steve Clark was the original lead guitarist who died of overdose a few years after this album. Vivian Campbell is their current lead guy. Also, he was Dio's guitar player on his first 2 solo albums
And also played on Whitesnake, Sweet Savage and briefly Thinn Lizzy. Its kinda a let down he doesnt bring more to the table on the songwriting side.
“Photograph” and “Bringing on the Heartbreak” and “Hysteria” would all be excellent choices, as others have suggested, but …
“Too Late for Love” is an incredible song. Thank you for taking a closer look at these guys who are still doing amazing tours again in 2024.
Too Late for Love is an amazing song a lot of people miss
So much Queen in here, you're right! They're huge Queen fans and when they were recently inducted to the RnR Hall of Fame, Queen's legendary guitarist Brian May did the honors.
My first concert (in '87) and my absolute favorite band! So great in concert (even today) and so many great Def Leppard songs you can jump into. Photograph, Women, Desert Song, Hysteria, Bringin' on the Heartbreak… just so many great songs across the decades. And great musicians. RIP Steve Clark 🎸
Desert Song is one of the best songs ever made. I cannot be convinced otherwise. (White Lightning is even better. RIP Steve Clark).
@@HeathenRenegade I love white lightning, it never gets enough love.
I've seen Def Leppard twice in the past 5 years and they still sound great! ❤
As I understand it "Mutt" Lange drove the band so mercilessly during the recording of "Pyromania" that the band ended up hating the album.
@@ostlandr Well if they hated it back then they certainly don't now....they seem to have a great time playing those songs today! Its the biggest money maker of their career!
@@ostlandr That's because he's a perfectionist.
This was recorded at McNicols Arena in Denver Colorado. I was a coach driver on that tour with them then. The Def Leppard video was all recorded at Mc Nicols then.
Seen them twice the past few years. They put on a great show and sound great!
The voice is still fine and still on tour , decades later . This is the first band I saw in concert with the High and Dry album . Still a favorite .
Saw them last summer and they sounded GREAT. Joe Elliot had to pick his spots to really go high, as many of the older tunes are up there, but it was a GREAT show start to finish.
One of my favorite bands from my teenage years! Rock of Ages was my introduction and still one of my favorites.
I was at this concert where they filmed the vid. It was in Denver and one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to!
Pretty sure that Joe Elliott lip-synchs now
I saw them live about ten years ago and Joe's voice wasn't as good as on the recorded albums, but it wasn't as badly aged as some I've experienced live (Jethro Tull and Deep Purple in the 2000s were suboptimal). I'd see them again.
I'll echo all of this his voice has aged terribly. And is not very well produced at all even back then.
@michaelprokopek1941
You’ve lost your everloving mind! Lmao...I love Def Lepard but his voice is completely shot......
I understand being a fan of a band, but why do some people loose all sense of reality in their fandom?
Def Lep’s backing vocals always set them apart from other bands from the era. Precise production and great use of backing vocal arrangements.
Joe Elliott auditioned as a guitarist, band members liked his voice. He became the lead singer!
Def Leppard was my second concert ever as a kid, in 1992, their tour after the album that came after this one. True showmen. It was a blast!
Still one of my favorite bands to see live- they are so much fun and not lip synching. Their music is fun and happy. Gives you the feel goods.
Elizabeth getting sticky sweet? Hallelujah, it's raining M&M's.
😁😁😁🤘🤘🤘🤘💯
😂😂😂
😜😉🤣🤘
Love this. Very clever. 😊😂
Have seen them live 3 times. They are awesome with the crowd! Try Rock of ages
You saying the drums hit hard made me smile ear to ear. The drummer, rick allen, lost an arm in a car wreck. He has a custom built kit with pedals to replace what his missing arm would play. And yes, he still is the drummer for the band today.
Your analysis is always incredible.
I saw them live on this tour and they were just as good live. Truly amazing!
Yep, I saw them for the first time in Melbourne, Australia. When the cloth dropped, the crowd (in the round) went off 🎸
It took me years and years to finally appreciate what it is Def Leppard does so well. No. Never have. But, at least now I understand now genuinely talented they are
Their first album is really good and not so commercial although it's still very catchy.
High and dry is also very good and catchy.
"it's hard to deny the Def Leppard have stood the test of time and are good songwriters."
you should check out Mutt Lange's other songs on records by ADCC and Tania Shwain.
In other words, it is easy to deny they are good songwriters. They are garbage; it is too bad the rest of the band didn't go to the bar with Steve Clark that night in Minneapolis.
I wish I had heard them more rather than Poison, which was more in my face in my surroundings and timeline! And now for me, Def Leppard is tops! 🎉
I totally get you, brother.. The older I get, the most I "understand" old (soft/hard) rock.
Thank you!😘
I listen to this album regularly from start to finish. It's just brilliant.
Hysteria and Love Bites are two of my favourite tracks from this album!
Hysteria was the very first album I ever heard on CD back in '87. And to this day, I believe it to be one of the very few perfect albums.
The cover art is also iconic and instantly recognisable.
Very Good.
Not "perfect."
Both: High 'n' Dry
and (their debut)
On Through The Night
are far better, stronger and even more cohesive, albums.
...but I am only saying this COMPARATIVELY!
Hysteria is a perfect representation of: what the '80s became
and is, often, unfairly, misunderstood/dismissed.
It has plenty of great songs and it
exploits the then-current, then-new technology, to the "Nth" degree and does it: wisely, musically, attractively.
🤘🤘
Each to their own, I guess 😊
@@DeadEyeFoxx Nope. Definitely NOT that.

I’ll never get tired of the Hysteria or Adrenalize albums. Pour some sugar is definitely one of my favorites 😊
Def Leppard does a lot of the call and response singing, and Hysteria is one of my favorites for that reason. It's also a great showcase for the vocal range and how much control Joe has over his instrument.
I am happy to see that people enjoy Glam Rock / Hair Metal again, it was a shame that this music was forgotten for so many years.
i think people got snobby about Hair Metal & it kinda became ridiculed & a bit of a joke which is disappointing because there are some amazing groups from this era .
Def leppard's first three albums are not Glam rock. On through the night High n Dry and pyromania were pure hard rock nothing Glam about it
@@joeponce9053 Hysteria is litterally their only Hair metal Album, i'm not sure what Adrenalise is but it's not Glam Rock. Slang has eastern influence, Euphoria and X are mainstream rock, and at that point you're 20 years removed for Glam rock anyway
It got to be a bit much.
The Defs are still going to this day , I first saw them in a pub in Sheffield England, when their first single was realeased 🥰
One of my favorite bands of all time. Seen them in concert several times. They still sound amazing, musically and vocally
Spot on... that man brings out the best in a band: AC/DC, Def Leppard, Shania Twain
Mutt was the Phil Spectre of his time, just less murdery.
I had the pleasure of seeing them last month in australia, they were great..
Lol
They truly are a Band of Brothers. 🤘🩵
I like how you described it sound like rap and heavy metal at times on top of being rock. That's why I love Def Leppard, NO ONE else sounds like them.
Awesome reaction and I’ve seen these guys in concert 3 times and they were spectacular. Probably my favorite 80’s band.
My all time favourite song of theirs. I hope she does it too.
Omg had my junior high sweetheart dump me to this song... that got changed a couple of times though... we have bow been married for 12 years and known each other for over 30 years.
The next review should be BRINGIN ON THE HEARTBREAK.
Great song Love Bites
My favorite group also. Love Bites is my favorite song by them.
