What is excluded from the Marxist account of the rise of English Literature?

This is a critical discussion of Ch. 1 of Terry Eagleton's Introduction to Literature, which presents 'The Rise of English'. Somewhat surprisingly, he excludes the Classical literary tradition from his account of the rise of English literature.
My thesis is that is because Marxism dismisses literature as having any reality in the same way it dismisses religion.
