Was Jesus crucified? What does the Qur'an actually say?

  • I discuss surah 4 verse 157 in its context and how its interpretation has been the subject of vigorous debate among Muslims for centuries.
I read from 'The Crucifixion and the Qur'an: A Study in the History of Muslim Thought' by Todd Lawson www.amazon.co....
A new translation of 4:157 says:
and for boasting, “We killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.” But they neither killed nor crucified him-it was only made to appear so. Even those who argue for this ˹crucifixion˺ are in doubt. They have no knowledge whatsoever-only making assumptions. They certainly did not kill him.

@@salah777 Those that wrote the Bible teach there is one God. There is no writer of either the new or old testament that was a pagan. Read Isaiah 44 and 45 and you can see God really showing the folly of Paganism. If you really think the Bible was written by Pagans you need to prove it to yourself. You will discover it wasn't.
I'm going to guess you are saying this because of the doctrine of the trinity, but that is a false understanding of the trinity. Consider an actor that plays 3 different roles. It is the same actor but he represents 3 different characters. We wouldn't say we believe 3 actors played the 3 roles. God is one God. Allah was one of many pagan Gods in the Kabbalah. and marching around it 7 times was based on pagan beliefs. Look it up if you don't believe me. Islam is way more Pagan than the God of the Bible.

@Mourad arkjid It is not me or my experience that determines truth, but I will answer your question. I have read an English translation of the Koran from cover to cover and I have read many of the sayings that are attributed to Mohammed in the Hadiths. I've watched Muslim and Christian apologists debate each other and watched Muslim and Christian RUclips channels defending their faiths. So yes, I have read quite a bit about Islam. I am a Christian apologist that is not afraid of losing my Christianity. I have been friends with Muslims I have met and worked with, but they generally don't know much about their own faith. Read Psalm 22 in the Bible and then read about Jesus in any of the 4 Gospels. It is clear from the Bible that Jesus fulfilled prophecies about him made in the Old Testament. Muslim's claim to believe in the Psalms and in prophecy, so I encourage you to study it.

Brother Paul, I very much enjoy listening to your videos while I drive, so thank you! When you say that whether or not one wants to believe the Quran, well it’s a matter of faith, I think that sounds like something the Christians would say about the Bible but one of the reasons I was convinced that Islam is the truth was because of what some call “scientific miracles” in the Quran. For instance, the stages of the embryo or the fact that the Quran identifies the worker bee as female and there are several others but these things I don’t think could have been known by any man or woman in the time of Muhammad (pbuh), especially the great detail of conception and the stages of the embryo which one would need a microscope and some knowledge to have known. I hope this did not come across as rude or anything just my thoughts and feelings of the matter.

There is plenty of information readily available to anyone who would like know the truth on different websites and even many RUclips videos where people have graciously given their own time to produce such valuable information to those who seek it. If you choose to watch it May I also suggest looking into Dr Maurice Buccaille as well, he was a Well known French doctor for one of the Kings of Saudi Arabia and a best selling author who made some incredible discoveries concerning Ramsey 2 of Egypt and correctly identifying him as the Pharoh who drowned chasing Moses across the Red Sea. Neither the Bible or the Quran spoke of the Pharoh by name but in the Quran Allah does tell the Pharoh as he is drowning that his body will be preserved as an example for future generations. Dr.Bucailles story is an amazing one but you should read it yourself as nothing I say is going to make you see. May Allah guide you.

  • @shahfaisalislam8719
    @shahfaisalislam8719 3 года назад +20

Firstly, your response is the most honest in terms of what the verse comments about disputing over it, as in "Those who disputed about him are deeply in doubt about him. They have no knowledge whatsoever, except the following of strong assumption." Picking sides and arguing over it as the Quran has warned is going to be all about following strong assumptions and remaining drowned in doubt about it. So the best bet is to say 'I don't know', to avoid being in doubt or taking strong assumptions. This is the answer I like the most.
Secondly, I like how you started with the context. You may not know it, but even Arabic supports your choice of starting from that verse: The first words of the verse in question,
    و قولِهم
has the slanted line diacritic under the letter 'laam', and this happens only if there is a letter or word coming before, that forced this diacritic to be there. This letter is the letter baa in the starting of the preceding verse, and that verse is connected back to preceding verse and they all go back to where you started from.
Thirdly, again you may not know it but Arabic supports your way of opening up the possibilities. If Allah wanted, he would have given a clear-cut denial by saying 'he was not killed nor was he crucified', but He rather said 'they did not kill him nor did they crucify him'. The fact that the part 'they did not kill him certainly' repeating the assertion that Jews failed should ring a bell that it is not so clear cut. One would say the Romans did put the title of 'Jesus the King of Jews' after crucifixion and refer to the beginning of the verse where it says 'Messiah Jesus' but Romans did not call him 'Son of Mary' or 'Messenger of Allah' and it is departing from Quran's language to pull a verse of out of context and say it is talking about Romans not crucifiying him, while all verses before it referred to Jews when using the words 'they' or 'them'.
Now, there is a point where I am finding it a bit hard to agree, which is that empirical problem. It is because the verse is more than just about whether they crucified him(which is in parenthesis hehehe, pun intended): It also strongly asserts, using super strong Arabic language (there are at least five mechanics used in total that I can see from my knowledge), the following: "Those who dispute about it are deeply in doubt. There have about it no knowledge whatsoever, except the following of strong assumptions". If we look now, those who are disputing over the matter are not with clear-cut evidences. The side that assumes he was crucified has to strongly assume the historicity of the event which is getting more doubtful. The side that assumes otherwise has to strongly assume this conclusion first and then read it into the old testament, the new testament, and the quran in that light and will find backing there but not an explicit one. The fact that the verse very strongly mentioned the uncertainty of positions, and the need of strongly assuming to take positions for those who are going to dispute over it while they are drowning in doubt about it is something remarkable of a statement to make 14 centuries ago according to me. Certainty about the uncertainty of positions to come.
Do let me know if you would like to know about the mechanics used for boosting certainty of this part of the verse which was not in parenthesis 😊. If Allah Wills, they are very easy to learn and have been used separately throughout quran (rarely are the mechanics combined together like this I believe)
It was an amazing summary, thank you so much for it.

ADAM (PBUH), THE FIRST MAN ON EARTH, LIVED 5,800 YEARS AGO
As per the genealogy of Jesus Christ given in the Bible, from Jesus through Abraham (pbuh) to the first man on earth i.e. Adam (pbuh), Adam appeared on the earth approximately 5800 years ago:
1948 years between Adam (pbuh) and Abraham (pbuh)
Approximately 1800 years between Abraham (pbuh) and Jesus (pbuh)
2000 years from Jesus (pbuh) till today
These figures are further confused by the fact that the Jewish calendar is currently on or about 5800 years old.
There is sufficient evidence from archaeological and anthropological sources to suggest that the first human being on earth was present tens of thousands of years ago and not merely 5,800 years ago as is suggested by the Bible.
The Qur’an too speaks about Adam (pbuh) as the first man on earth but it does not suggest any date or period of his life on earth, unlike the Bible - what the Bible says in this regard is totally incompatible with science.
      12. NOAH (PBUH) AND THE FLOOD
The Biblical description of the flood in Genesis chapter 6, 7 and 8 indicates that the deluge was universal and it destroyed every living thing on earth, except those present with Noah (pbuh) in the ark. The description suggests that the event took place 1656 years after the creation of Adam (pbuh) or 292 years before the birth of Abraham, at a time when Noah (pbuh) was 600 years old. Thus the flood may have occurred in the 21st or 22nd Century B.C.
This story of the flood, as given in the Bible, contradicts scientific evidence from archaelogical sources which indicate that the eleventh dynasty in Egypt and the third dynasty in Babylonia were in existence without any break in civilisation and in a manner totally unaffected by any major calamity which may have occurred in the 21st century B.C. This contradicts the Biblical story that the whole world had been immersed in the flood water. In contrast to this, the Qur’anic presentation of the story of Noah and the flood does not conflict with scientific evidence or archaeological data; firstly, the Qur’an does not indicate any specific date or year of the occurance of that event, and secondly, according to the Qur’an the flood was not a universal phenomenon which destroyed complete life on earth. In fact the Qur’an specifically mentions that the flood was a localised event only involving the people of Noah.
It is illogical to assume that Prophet Muhummad (pbuh) had borrowed the story of the flood from the Bible and corrected the mistakes before mentioning it in the Qur’an.
      13. MOSES (PBUH) AND PHARAOH OF THE EXODUS
The story of Moses (pbuh) and the Pharaoh of the Exodus are very much identical in the Qur’an and the Bible. Both scriptures agree that the Pharaoh drowned when he tried to pursue Moses (pbuh) and led the Israelites across a stretch of water that they crossed. The Qur’an gives an additional piece of information in Surah Yunus chapter 10 verse 92:
"This day shall We save thee in thy body, that thou mayest be a sign to those who come after thee! But verily, many among mankind are heedless of Our Signs!"
      [Al-Qur’an 10:92]
Dr. Maurice Bucaille, after a thorough research proved that although Rameses II was known to have persecuted the Israelites as per the Bible, he actually died while Moses (pbuh) was taking refuge in Median. Rameses II’s son Merneptah who succeeded him as Pharaoh drowned during the exodus. In 1898, the mummified body of Merneptah was found in the valley of Kings in Egypt. In 1975, Dr. Maurice Bucaille with other doctors received permission to examine the Mummy of Merneptah, the findings of which proved that Merneptah probably died from drowning or a violent shock which immediately preceeded the moment of drowning. Thus the Qur’anic verse that we shall save his body as a sign, has been fulfilled by the Pharaohs’ body being kept at the Royal Mummies room in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
This verse of the Qur’an compelled Dr. Maurice Bucaille, who was a Christian then, to study the Qur’an. He later wrote a book ‘The Bible, the Qur’an and Science’, and confessed that the author of the Qur’an can be no one else besides God Himself. Thus he embraced Islam.
      14. QUR’AN IS A BOOK FROM ALLAH
These evidences are sufficient to conclude that the Qur’an was not copied from the Bible, but that the Qur’an is the Furqaan - ‘the Criteria’ to judge right from wrong and it should be used to decipher which portion of the Bible may be considered as the Word of God.
The Qur’an itself testifies in Surah Sajda chapter 32 verse 1 to 3
      Alif Laam Meem.
(This is) the revelation of the Book in which there is no doubt - from the Lord of the Worlds.
Or do they say, ‘He has forged it’? Nay, it is the Truth from thy Lord, that thou mayest admonish a people to whom no warner has come before thee: in order that they may receive guidance." [Al-Qur’an 32:1-3]

One important argument for non crucifixion of jesus is Jewish theologies believe that a messenger of god cannot be killed. Here a distinction needs to be drawn between messenger(rasul in Arabic) and a prophet(nabi in Arabic). In layman's terms messenger usually bring them a scripture and a law with them. Noah abraham moses jesus and Muhammad according to quran are rasul. That's why in the same verse you talked about in its initial part, quran says ( 4:157) And because of their saying, "We killed Al-

In my humble view, in response to the ones who said ( some muslims) that it means that the jews didn’t ( meaning that Jesus was crucified by romans) : in this case why allah said : it appears to them ( that he was crucified). Allah would have stopped in the terms : they didn’t kill him nor crucified him . Only( wich may mean somebody else did)
Why adding: it appeared to them !
Either they started to do so or where witnessing the act of crucifixion but this wasn’t real ( maybe somebody else looking like him ,or a vision : we have in the sira of prophet Mohammed (pbuh) that he escaped from the unbeleivers while they were waiting outside his home to kill him and that allah make them like blind until he left ) maybe that’s what happened to Jesus (pbuh) .and then he was raised by allah (not died) this explains that he will come back in the last time ( Allah said that there is no changes in allah order , Jesus can’t die and then resurrect in the same live , once a human dies he resurrect in the day of judgement.
Finally Allah is the all knowing

Dear Paul, thank you very much that was very interesting. You really have conveyed the message as it is. Yes people can interpret but the fact remains as you mentioned from the Quranic encyclopedia @11:35.
If I may contribute to the subject, it is mentioned that Jesus had knowledge from God of the plot to kill him. In the Bible where Jesus says to his disciples “The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him". I'm not quoting the versus numbers, but it is mentioned in a few places. And in the Quran, surah 2 v 55.
Clearly anyone with such knowledge would try to escape but he knew his killing would never happen and instead he knew of his ascention.
It is also worth mentioning that Jesus was an absolute phenomena that has no parallel in human history. His birth was a miracle, his works were miraculous, his end was as miraculous and mysterious as his beginning. This was a tremendous test or trial for those who believe in the oneness of God and what this God is capable of doing.
The Jews denied that Jesus was the Messiah and the Gentiles made him a diety. Sadly both parties let Jesus down because his main message was to worship the one and only God. The same message given to every prophet from Adam to Muhammed, peace be upon them all.

    • @sahrjabba124

      Was Adam a prophet?
Lies of Mohammad that Adam, king Solomon, Job etc etc were Prophets ?
Indeed Jesus Christ was crucified. Died and resurrected aft three days .
But Mohammad falsely said Jesus Christ the God of the heavens and the earth was not crucified , but someone like him, and Jesus Christ was taken to heaven by God .
If Koran says Jesus did not die but is taken to God himself then Jesus is God and your Koran confirm that. And that Jesus is coming back.
My dear friend if Mohammad is the last Prophet why is Jesus coning and not Mohammad.
In your Koran Mohammad died from rat poisoning ,and left lying for three days and began to rot , before they knew that his claim that he tio will rise from the dead aft three days did not happen right?

@@sahrjabba124 @sahr jabba Yes they were prophets because God communicated with them through Angel Gabriel or what you call the Holy Spirit. Some of the Prophets were given a message to convey to their people (to worship the one and only God) and they are called messengers, like Ibrahim, Moses, Jesus and Mohammed peace be on them all. So all messengers are prophets but not all prophets are messengers.
All messengers before Mohammed were sent to their own people but Mohammed was sent to all mankind. Jesus says he was sent to the Jews only, so are you a jew!?
Jesus tells you “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come"
Allah says about Mohammed in the Quran,
      1) By the star when it goes down/descends
      (2) Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred (3) Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination/desire (4) He is not but a revelation revealed.
I don't understand why Christianity puts so much emphasis on the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus!! Where was Jesus after the resurrection and what did he do? Also the whole thing is based on hearsay.
Brother Jabba, I can go on trying to explain to you but it will not change a thing in you if you don't open your heart and mind and go directly to God to guide you to his true path.
And by the way rat poison was not invented yet during the time of Mohammed. Simply his time on earth has come to an end just like you and I we'll meet the same fate. But when you are resurrected to face your God and tell Him Jesus was my God, that will be associating partners with God and its the only sin that God does not forgive. Be aware and mindful, may Allah guide you.

When faced with archaeoligical findings and analysis of historical texts and documents, Quranic statements within a historical context tend to be correct compared to biblical ones. A good example for this is "Haman, the minister for stone quarries of the Pharaoh" as stated in the Quran and proven later by archaeological findings.

In one of his works, he wrote of the early Christians as follows( in which he attests to Christ's crucifixion )age who introduced their novel rites, and was crucified on that account..

@Faisal Siraj Peace be with you. I am glad that you implicitly acknowledge that the scriptures (both old and new) are the word of God, not man.
The death of Jesus was part of a divine plan to save humanity. The death and resurrection of this one man is at the very heart of the Christian faith. For Christians, it is through Jesus's death that people's broken relationship with God, from the time of the fall in the Garden of Eden, is restored. This is known as the Atonement
From God’s promise to provide a sacrifice (Genesis 22:8-14), to the prophecy that the Messiah would be cut off (Daniel 9:26), to almost innumerable promises and prophecies in-between, it all had to be fulfilled in the death of Jesus. Even the way Jesus would die was prophesied hundreds of years before it happened (Psalm 22:11-18, Zechariah 12:10 Isaiah 53:7b).
Jesus lived His entire life in obedience to God the Father, but it was important for Him to remain faithful unto death. In John 12:27-28 Jesus said shortly before He went to the cross: "Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save Me from this hour'? But for this purpose, I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.”
In the video it is asserted that Christ's disciples were to far away from the cross to verify if it truly was Christ on the cross, however, we have this account just before Christ's death.
“Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, 'Dear woman, here is your son,' 27 and to the disciple, 'Here is your mother.' From that time on, this disciple took her into his home." (John 19:25-27)

But he was pierced for our transgressions,
      he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
      each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
      the iniquity of us all.
      He was oppressed and afflicted,
      yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
By oppression and judgment, he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
      For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people, he was punished.
He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
      (crucified between two thieves)
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
      After he has suffered,
      he will see the light of life and be satisfied;
      (The resurrection of Christ)
by his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.” -Isaiah 52:13-53:12

13:00, Dear Paul, you may like this
13:00 the classical view of muslim scholars on crucifixion is based on their knoweldge of how God uses the language too.. When Allah's , SW, deny a thing with a word or affirm a thing with a word frequently if it encompasses the 2 meanings of the word. both meaning apply. Notice "they killed him not NOR crucify him" What is the obvious first read on this? that is the answer. example when God said Roman was defeated but will win "fei adna" adna mean the closest land (to Arabia) but Adna means to lowest, and both meaning apply, dead sea area is the closest to Arabia and it is the lowest land on earth (ardh) not sea.
Add to that God deny the killing AND the crucifixion process
Ali Ataie, insinuate , and Shabir pointed out that crucifixion has 2 meaning:
    1. crucified and died on the cross
    2. crucified but then taken down from the cross without dying.
    That is true, but:
if it is the First meaning Allah saying they did not Kill him debunk the first meaning of word "Crucifixion".
If the second meaning happened (nailed to the cross but survived), then the quran would be partially inaccurate because it would miss the first meaning of the word crucifixion (that is he was crucified AND DIED, on the cross). reader need to read that again.. it requires concentration..
Further, If God said "but they did not CRUCIFY him" alone without the verb "kill" then that would be a different story, (it open the possibility that they may or MAY NOT killed him by other mean).
Another point to consider, if the 1st meaning of crucifixion happened, he was killed, : Allah would be saying the did not kill him (that is enough) NOR killed him (by mean of hanging on the cross), that is unnecessary given the first word "they did not kill him which encompass death by crucifixion) so why God added NOR crucified him? this would render a redundant word, though you can argue saying that Quran sometimes use emphatic language, yes that is true but only to affirm a thing further: they did not kill him AND OR crucified him, that is, In the sense of "they did not kill him NOT EVEN he was hanged on the cross).
Also this verse may shed light " Indeed, the penalty1 for those who wage war2 against Allāh and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment" Quran 5-33
I bet the word crucified here mans dying by crucifixion not just hanged on the cross and taken away!! hence when God said "they did not kill him NOR Crucified him" it means he was not killed by mean of crucifixion... I know this may sound confusing that is why I urge the interested reader to read carefully.
If crucifixion has 2 meanings , 1 die, and or 2 just hanged but survived, and Jesus may have been put on the cross but survived, then Quran would be partially imprecise to meet the second meaning because the main meaning of the word Is killed by mean of crucifixion!! And Quran is far from imprecision.
PLUS when in doubt, I think God would not allow it for his messenger to be killed or humiliated that way. If you argue that there were prophets before him who were killed, the answer will be yes but Quran did not say MESSENGERS, and Jesus was Messenger of Almighty, and not in this atrocious way.
I have a theory about the nuances of the substitute theory, if it ever happened, though as you know as Muslims it is not part of our creed to know what happen to Jesus pbuh. Not even the death of any prophet. To the Church it is different story.
    And God knows best

@@sergeantmajorgross ADAM (PBUH), THE FIRST MAN ON EARTH, LIVED 5,800 YEARS AGO

Who was crucified if he wasn’t Jesus? The truth is:
Since, Jesus-son of Virgin Mary had many miracles, a few Jewish men started to go villages to deceive people, they introduced themselves as Jesus and his followers.
Since, Romans didn’t know Jesus by face, they arrested and crucified one of those men, because he had introduced himself as Jesus, before had arrested and his friend betrayed him to get some money.
Peter who was one of the disciples, was there and saw that the one who arrested is not Jesus, that’s why Peter denied him three times and he told Romans:
    I don’t know him.
    The truth about resurrection:
Few days after the crucifixion , friends of the fake Jesus heard that God has taken Jesus to the sky, because of that they secretly moved the body from the tomb to another place to pretend that their friend was real Jesus and raised from the death.
Mary Magdalen who claimed that she was Jesus alive at the tomb was wife or friend of the fake Jesus, that’s why the disciples didn’t believe her claim.
Because of their lies and cheating, the life of Jesus completely mixed with the life of the fake Jesus during centuries.
What happened to Jesus- son of Virgin Mary ?
Since, some of rabbis had plan to kill Jesus, God takes him to the sky when he was alive, before the crucifixion of the fake Jesus.
The last time that the disciples saw Jesus alive was when Jesus was walking on the sea and he tells the disciples:
Don’t believe anyone if says that has seen me from now on.
Later , after the crucifixion of the fake Jesus, Jesus tells the disciples in dream and revelation that he is healthy and he was not crucified.

Couldn't agree more. I tell everyone, Quran says those that talk as though they are speaking in certainty are surely in doubts, so as a Muslim we just need to understand whether he died or even crucified has ZERO importance for us. Below is an excerpt from Chapter VI of “Messiah” by the late Dr. Jerald Dirks:
Having analyzed the name “Jesus bar Abbas,” one is once again forced to confront a somewhat disturbing question, i.e., which of the two men named Jesus was actually crucified? In that regard, it is really no answer at all to say that the one who was crucified was “Jesus who is called the Messiah.” Both men were named Jesus, and both men appear to have been messianic figures. Further, once one understands that Jesus bar Abbas means Jesus the son of the Father, the issue becomes increasingly confusing. Certainly for most Christians, Jesus the son of the Father is the Jesus they hold as the central figure in their religion. Was this Jesus actually released by Pontius Pilate? An affirmative answer to that question is not as unheard of as one might imagine. In point of fact, numerous early Christian writings maintained that it was not Jesus Christ who was crucified.

I agree.. I have a theory which is long but basically if he were another person were the crucified, and since pilot and others were siding tacitly with Jesus, if they crucified that person and kept the crowed at 100 meter distance, any person of that time would look like Jesus because most of the people of that time :
      were same clothes
      beards
Thin, from working on the field and less food
      dark skin
      many long haired
so from far away his head dangling to his chest, anyone from 100 meter distance, even 70 m would look like Jesus be that the Judah, Bar abas, or a disciples of Jesus (the youngest who volunteered to be in his place and be his companion in heaven as one story have said in tafsir which they mentioned to show you what was circulating at that time) etc..
they can put the distance under the pretext they don't want to agitate the crowed ( or one the sun is setting .. so it is not clear) if they are siding secretly with Jesus... salam brother and sister

Who died on the cross, Jesus or someone else? Please think through of what you are saying. That God made the likeness of Jesus fall on an unspecified person. Now, isn't it an act of deception? Is this befitting to the character of the holy God?
Think through Who was deceived? First of all Mary the mother of Jesus. Can you imagine God deceiving a mother this way & lived the rest of her life thinking that her son was crucified!
Second group of people that were allegedly deceived by God, were Jesus' disciples & followers who some of them were actually present at the Crucifixion & gave us detailed eyewitness accounts. These followers, according to your claim, thought that Jesus died on the cross & rose again on the 3rd day, but actually he didn't. The death & resurrection of Jesus was (& still is) the center piece of the message that they propagated to the rest of the known world at the time. This message continued to spread by Christians for 600 years.
So, think of this, if God did what you allege & Jesus didn't die on the cross, but God made his likeness to fall on an unspecified person. Then God would be responsible for the biggest hoax in history. Is this befitting to the character of the holy God?
If what you claim is true, why would God wait for 600 years to reveal what actually happened by mentioning just one line in a totally different location, about 600 miles away ?
Here is one famous Muslim commentator, Imam Al Razi commenting on the idea of making someone look like another & how illogical & confusing this would be. I apologize that it is in Arabic only.

    Greetings Mr. Paul,
it is fairly common in Theology to prefer a certain translation over another, but this is not the case here... since the original version is between our hands.
usually a when a translator attempts to explain certain phrases he/she writes that between brackets, but that"s not the case here and the verse is very clear (at least in the original version)
I would quote from the original book if i were to seek accuracy. there are no parentheses in the Quran, namely in the verse quoted.
here i include a link to a recitation to that verse with onscreen text in both Arabic and English. beginning from verse 153 from al-Nisa

The Quran affirms that it "appeared" to them. For years I asked myself, how? Certainly the Creator has the power to do whatever He wishes, no doubt about. Then came the age of holograms: fans of Michael Jackson were brought into tears, animals in a German circus entertain the audience, and many other examples. If we were there, at that dramatic moment in history, whatever were playing in front of our eyes, would appear real to us too. Because of their disbelief (although many clear signs were given), the Creator confused them, and confuses many until today.

4:158 Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.
How do they understand the use of the word "bal" = rather/instead? Allah raised him up to himself rather than what?

it was not explained in the Quran who was killed on the cross instead of him, maybe an enemy? A martyr voulnteer ? Or what really was the case, but from the gospel of judas that was found lately, we might guess it was judas maybe, who knows ?

It is not an assumption nor interpretation it shouldn't actually be between brackets its clearly stated I found a more accurate translation. (and for boasting, “We killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.” But they neither killed nor crucified him-it was only made to appear so. Even those who argue for this ˹crucifixion˺ are in doubt. They have no knowledge whatsoever-only making assumptions. They certainly did not kill him. ) the previous and next verses I think clearly state that nobody actually killed the real Jesus but they saw themselves killing Jesus because god made it appear so. (Rather, Allah raised him up to Himself. And Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.

Also, after his crucifixion Jesus invited Thomas the disciple to put his hand in Jesus’ side and feel the hole where the soldier stabbed him.

*Harmonising the Quranic and Biblical account of the "crucifixion" of Jesus*
The only clear takeaways from Surah 5 verses 157-58 of the Quran are that the Jews failed to kill Jesus and failed to "crucify" him though it appeared to them they succeeded. Yet they still had some doubt on whether they succeeded in killing and crucifying him, have no certain knowledge on the matter and that God raised him onto himself.
Now if we take the reference to the denial that they crucified him to mean they didnt kill him via crucifixion (so an emphasis point, a denial he was debased in death as death via crucifixion in late antiquity was seen as debasement) then a plausible reading of the verses that seeks harmony with the gospels is that it wasnt the crucifixion that caused his death but rather Jesus yielding his spirit to God and God taking his soul up to heaven prior to a "natural" death due to injury. This is supported by another verse in the Quran which says God will cause Jesus to die and raise him onto himself (assumed by most to mean at the end of times but the verse doesn't specify this). This squares up well with the Gospel accounts that suggest Jesus yielded his spirit to God and has Pontius Pilate marvelling at his quick death, indicating an "unnatural" death had occured there.
Thus on this reading the explicit Quranic account is not undermined: The boastful Jews thought they had succeeded in killing him but in fact failed to do so as they were not the cause of his death (the literal definition of killing). Yet this was not visible to them so they assumed he died a "natural" death via crucifixion and therefore had succeeded in killing him. In reality his soul ascended to heaven via his own volition.
With respect to the Jews doubting they had succeeded, a number of points need to be made on plausible readings. First, perhaps they were suffering from cognitive dissonance between what their eyes saw (a dead Jesus via crucifixion) and how quickly he seemed to die (similar to Pontius Pilate). Second, according to Islamic doctrine , the Jews knew Jesus was their Messiah from God (they call him the Messiah, the messenger of Allah in this verse). Perhaps they harboured lingering doubts that they in fact succeeded in killing such a prominent divinely selected figure (cue Old Testament prophecies on the Messiah). And perhaps they heard chatter he was seen alive sometime after. Allahu A'lam.
With respect to Jesus being raised from the dead, the Quran makes no mention of this, either in affirmation or rejection so it cannot be categorically said to be false (we can speculate on why it would be omitted). What it does say is that God countered the Jewish attempt at killing him by raising him unto himself. This could be both literal (raising to heaven, also consistent with some gospel accounts) and metaphorical (Jesus status was elevated as Imam Al Razi states). This reading in no way refutes that he yielded his spirit to the heavens and was reserructed 3 days later. Omission=/= contradiction.
In sum, If we read the two verses in the context of the preceding verses, they are clearly a polemical attack on the rebellious Jews who boasted that they had once again controverted the divine by killing their Messiah from him. The point is that they failed at doing so and Jesus was elavated in rank and to heaven. Detailed explanation on *how* they failed and all the details that followed (including whether Jesus in fact had died via other means) is not the focus here. That regardless of what happened, Jesus and ultimately God won (and in the Sunnah Jesus will return victorious) and the rebellious Jews lost. (The reading that Jesus yielded his spirit and God seized it is consistent with this) Is this not the ultimate message of verses 157-158? That they planned and Allah Planned and Allah is the best of planners?

Sorry Paul for this belated addition to comments on your able summary of the general Muslim position on the claim of Jesus's crucifixion.
A major departure from this position is provided by the Ahmadi and Qadiani (both not generally accepted by mainstream as Muslims). These two groups, one of which runs the Woking Mosque in Surrey, believe that the interpretation of the Quran does not preclude the nailing of Jesus to the cross. That action, however, did not end in death and Jesus cannot be said to have been crucified ( which means to put someone to death on the cross).
Apart from any explanation by officials from the Woking Mosque, the following two publications would be useful :
Jesus in Heaven on Earth by Khwaja Nazir Ahmad, and
The Quran, English translation and commentary by Muhammad Ali. Thank you for keeping the discussion alive since I have followed this topic since the year 1961.

Hello Sir, I think regarding this matter it's important also to read and study Chapter 3 (al imran) of the Holy Quran versus 45 to 55. Because I think it gives extra explanation about Jesus's last days on Earth (peace and blessings upon him). I think verse 55 in particular many scholars see it as an evidence that he wasn't killed or harmed in anyway by his enemies. I only started to watch your videos a week ago and I am already a big fan, thank you and god bless you.

I found your channel today. Its amazing . I like your academic searches .i just want to say that no chrestians can prove that jesus was crucified . Even the bible couldnt .they say that jesus will be absent for 3 days like jonah was in the belly of fish " For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth." Jesus, (Matthew, 12:40).
But jonah didnt die in the belly of fish . So if he is like jonah .we must believe that he didnt die .and jesus didnt spend three days in the tomb .he spent two night and one day .friday night . Saturday day and night . the sunday before dawn he was not in the tomb . Jesus was not crucified .he was not a god he didnt died for our sins cause this contradict the old testament its self before it contradict islam or logic

The Qurans view of the crucifixion of Christ is irrelevant. The Scriptures preceded the Quran and was written nearer the time of Christ . Both the Old Testament (predicted the crucifixion of Jesus ) and the New Testament confirmed the crucifixion of Christ. This was the teaching of the early Church and even non Christians scholars such as Muslims hero , Bart Ehrman, has confirmed the historical fact that Jesus WAS crucified.

About the crucifixion of Jesus is detailed in the Bible, not compliance with the eye witness of any body.
It is only presumptions of Roman soldiers. While they went to seize Jesus, with Judea, Jesus was already taken by God almighty. Judea went to the place where in Gesthamane, he could not find Jesus, so soldiers took Jedea for Jesus. In the gospel of Barnabas page 60, mentioned that Judea was taken by Roman soldiers for the crucifixion and crucified him.

Exactly, it doesn’t matter how and who died, the purpose of the Quran is to convey guidance that are relevant in your personal life and how one can use the versus in benefit.
I posted a link to Quran’s Surah Yusuf (Joseph) lecture by Nauman Ali Khan, he makes some great notes pointing out how the Quran narrative is different and only covers things that are relevant for example no mention of his mother because it isn’t the point of what Allah is trying to convey.
Please take a look at that!

@Gary DalbecAh! I wish you would've known Arabic as a second language, the taste of literature is out from this world. I agree, muslims took the cover of Hadith, koran has been debunked by many clever minds. But, it's all matter of time.
On the people of Noah, flood came; on the people of Muhammad, death with a sword came.
This happens when a Prophet sums up his task and isolates bad and good people. God shows his hell on the extreme disbelieves.
Now, if someone in this era tries to create Noah's flood or Muhammed's death as a religious activity. Anybody would call him a dumb idiot extremist. Muslims forget that God is talking to Muhammad and same mistake is done by the Scholars, they think a tribal God is telling present muslims to become militants.

@@SarmadKausar Quran doesnt deny the second coming of Jesus. I too was thinking that there is no verse in Quran which speak about 2nd coming unless I have read myself in the last ramadan 2020. It says " and all the people of the book will believe on Jesus before his death, and he will be a witness upon them on the judgement day".
      What does it mean?
Simply means that Jesus has not died yet. Also, for death one should have to be upon earth, in his body+spirit complete form, then spirit can be taken out of body. Plus ahl-e-kitab (people of book) also includes jews. Right now, jews do not believe on Hazrat Issa as a prophet so this verse clearly means that Issa will come upon earth again and then all people of the books i.e. jews, christians and muslims will believe him as the prophet and messenger from Allah and then he will be died and then he will be on the judgment day, a witness upon them (whom he left at the time of his death). ".... and they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not. "
    (Qur'an, al-Nisa, 4:157)
Well then, what happened to Jesus ('alaihial-Salaam)7 The Qur'an has explained what happened. It has made five explanatory statements:
Firstly, the Qur'an declared that the Jews did not kill Jesus:
"...but they killed him not.... "
    (Qur'an, al-Nisa, 4:157)
Secondly, it declared that they did not crucify him:
"...nor did they crucify him.... "
    (Qur'an, al-Nisa, 4:157)
Thirdly it declared that Allah the Supreme reclaimed him (i.e., took his soul). There are, in fact, two such statements in the Qur'an:
"And behold, Allah said: Oh Jesus, I (will) reclaim you (i.e., I will take your soul, - the word used is Wafaat), and raise you to Myself and clear you (of the falsehoods) of those who blaspheme . . .
    (Qur'an, Ale 'Imran, 3:55)
"And behold Allah will say (on the Day of Judgment) Oh Jesus, the son of Mary, did you say unto men: worship me and my mother as Gods besides Allah? He will say: Glory be to Thee! Never could I say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing you would surely have known it. You know what is in my heart, and I know not what is in Your heart. For You know infill all that is hidden. Never did I say to them anything except that which You ordered me to say, to wit: Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord; and I was a witness over them while I dwelt among them, but when You reclaimed me (i.e., took my soul - the word used is again Wafaat). You became the watcher over them, and You are a witness to all things.
    (Qur'an, al-Maida, 5:116-117)
If Allah Most High took the soul of Jesus ('alaihi al-Salaam) and did not return it, then that would have constituted Maut (death). But the Qur'an insists that he was not killed (nor crucified):
" ....for most certainly they did not kill him.... "
    (Qur'an,
Well then, what did Allah Most High do with the soul after He took it? Was it possible, for example, that He returned the soul to the body? Can such a thing take place?
The Qur'an affirms that Allah Most High does return some souls after having taken them from the body:
"Allah reclaims the souls at (the time of) death; and those that die not He reclaims (their souls) during sleep (i.e., those whose souls are not taken while they are awake will experience it while they are asleep). Then for those on whom He has passed the decree of death (maut), He keeps back (i.e., the soul is not allowed to return to the body): but the rest He returns (to their bodies) for a term appointed. Verily in this are Signs for those who reflect. "
    (Qur'an, al-Zumar, 39:42)
Did this take place in the case of Jesus ('alaihi al-Salaam)! The answer is to be found in the next two statements of the Qur'an.
Fourthly the Qur'an stated that Allah, the All-Powerful, made it 'appear' that Jesus {'alaihi al-Salaam) was killed. This was made possible either by replacing 'one thing' with 'another', or by replacing 'one person' with 'another' (tashbih). Thus those who were observing the event were convinced that Jesus ('alaihi al-Salaam) had, in fact, died (Maut):
".... but so it was made to appear to them.... " (Yusuf Ali)
" ....but it only seemed to them (as if it had been) so.... "(M. Asad)
    (Qur'an, al-Nisa, 4:157)
It is now possible for us to answer the question: Well then, what did Allah Most High do with the soul after He took it? One possible answer to that question is that Allah Most High substituted one thing for another (tashbih):
Allah Most High took the soul of Jesus ('alaihi al-Salaam) while he was still on the cross,
Allah Most High thus convinced those who were observing the event that Jesus (• alaihi al-Salaam) was dead,
Allah Most High then returned the soul of Jesus ('alaihi al-Salaam) after he was taken down from the cross and when no one was around to observe. He was then taken up into the heavens from whence he would descend one day.
The only difference from the accepted Christian belief and the above interpretation of the Qur'an is that the period of time which elapsed between the event on the cross and the ascension of Jesus was one in which Christians recognized him as dead. In the above interpretation of the Qur'an, however, he was not recognized as dead precisely because the soul was returned to the body.
Those who object to the above possible explanation of the Qur'an argue that Jesus ('alaihi al-Salaam) was never placed on the cross. They interpret the Qur'anic statement "they did not crucify him" to imply that he was never placed on the cross. They come to this conclusion on the basis of their view that crucifixion (in the sense in which the Qur'an uses the term) implies simply being put on the cross and does not necessarily require such a person to actually die on the cross. Commenting on Surah al-Maidah, 5:36, the commentator of the Qur'an, Ibn Kathir, holds the view that cmcifixion necessarily implies death.
The alternative interpretation to the above is that Allah Most High substituted one person for another (tashbih) so that someone else replaced Jesus ( 'alaihi al- Salaam) on the cross, and that person was crucified in place of Jesus Calaihi al- Salaam). TMs is the theory of 'substitution'. It is an opiiuon and, like all opinions, is subject to the qualification: Allahu 'alam (Allah, the Supreme, knows best!). There are many distinguished scholars of Islam, however, who subscribe to the theory of substitution. Those who object to this interpretation argue that it ascribes to Allah Most High a manifest act of injustice since it declares of Him that He caused an innocent man (i.e., innocent of any of the charges leveled against Jesus ('alaihi al-Salaam)) to be crucified in place of Jesus ('alaihi al-Salaam). But Allah Most High has repeatedly declared that no soul would bear the burden of another soul (al-'Anam, 6:164; Banu Israil, 17:15; al-Fatir, 35:18; al-Zumar, 39:7; al-Najm, 53:38).
Fifthly the Qur'an makes a statement to the effect that Allah Most High raised Jesus ('alaihi al-Salaam) unto Himself:
"Nay, Allah raised him up unto Himself; and Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise. "
    (Qur'an, al-Nisa, 4:158)
The Qur'an then went on to explain that every soul (Nafs) must taste death (Arabic - Maut):
"Every soul must taste death (maut). And only on the Day ofludgment shall you be paid your full recompense (for your works)... "
    (Qur'an, Ale 'Imran, 3:185)
Since Allah Most High has declared that every soul (Nafs) must taste death, it implies that Jesus ('alaihi al-Salaam), also, if he possessed a soul (Nafs) must taste death (Maut). The question therefore arises: Did Jesus ('alaihi al-Salaam) possess a soal(Nafs)7 Was he a human being? And since we know that he was the son of Mary, we must also ask: Was Mary a human being?

That's the BEST explanation I heard in decades of me chasing this quandary and question as a MUSLIM myself. Muslim scholars really have never been able to fully explore and extrapolate a more definitive opinion on the cruxifiction. We as Muslims do believe that Christ was NOT "crucified" in the most literal Christian sense. But that's as far as we go. We revere Isa "Christ" (PBUH) as a messenger just as much as Muhammad (PBUH) with the later being loved and adored much more. But in reverence Muslim scholars I think have stayed away from really extrapolating a verdict because in the end...to a Muslim it really doesn't matter. ONLY ALLAH matters and HIS instructions matter far more. Great clarification on this subject though...many thanks!!

Dear Adam, are you a revert/convert? The classical view of Muslim scholars on crucifixion is based on their knoweldge of how God uses the language too..

I agree and by the way tafsir is not something that should not be questioned.. but in this regard , on this verse, I think they understood the verse perfectly, and got it right, and add some of what they heard from israeliat as entertainment of what other have said .. they never meant to be believed, even the authors of tafsir never expected us to believe what they say outside of Quran from isaraeliaat but they pick it up as interesting notes of what was circulating back then.
And as you know , to us Muslims, we follow Quran and a death of any prophet, any one, has no bearing to our salvation issue.
But when we debate Christians we try to see all views, debate it with them.. because it is central issue to them...

Important correction to Paul's conclusion in the minute 21:00: The verse is more than clear and precise (in Arabic) leading the reader/listener to deny The crucifixion and death of Jesus and to believe instead that he was made to ascend to his creator. In Arabic, there is no way to even remotely understand that the verse carries the denial of the Jews being the perpetrators of the crucifixion while throwing the blame onto the Romans.

As a Muslim and an Arab I can tell you that in no way is the verse in parenthesis, and is indeed the point of the verse (there are no side notes within the text of the Quran) BUT you're absolutely right in regards to how that's been interpreted by Muslim scholars, some believe that the "made to believe" part refers to the whole event while others believe it only refers to the death part and both are credible interpretations of the verse even though they can't be true simultaneously... The verse says "they killed him not nor had they crucify him, but rather they were made to believe as such" so the last part could theoretically be in reference to Jesus PBUH not being crucified (someone was crucified in his stead) , OR it could mean that the death on the cross didn't Infact happen because the condition of death on a cross wasn't fulfilled and Jesus didn't actually die on the cross but "they were made to believe" he actually died ... I tend to lean towards the latter interpretation but I can understand where the other interpretation comes from.

So in a nutshell Muslims argue whether Jesus PBUH actually was on the cross or someone who was made to look like him... What both parties agree on however is the fact that Jesus did NOT actually die on the cross (which means that they all agree that Jesus in fact was spared death as he asked)... At least that's what I took from all my reading on the subject , I'm a mere student, not a scholar by any means so ALLAH knows best.

He does not know how to recite al-quran and most likely does not understand quranic arabic ( since modern arabic is not exactly the same as Quranic arabic) . So he is at mercy at english translations. In fact i feel he did not even choose a good translation. There are better translation written by linguists. Still he is doing a fairly good job i think

"In the most critical juncture of Jesus' life, all his disciples forsook him and fled" according to the modern day Gospels. On top of that BT, have you done a vid on the Sign of Jonah? Would be interesting to get your take. According to Jesus' (PBUH) quote in the modern day Gospels, the only Sign (miracle) given to an "evil and adulterous generation is the Sign of Jonah". "For as Jonah was in the belly of the whale, so shall Jesus be in the heart of the Earth." Jonah (PBUH) was expected to die, but he didn't. Christian scholarship says, no, it's the time factor of 3 days and 3 nights mentioned by Jesus (which is not the miracle of Jonah btw). On top of that, Jesus according to the NT was risen in less than 3 days and 3 nights, so it does not make any sense. In addition, Jesus asks his disciples to give him fish and honeycomb to eat. "Touch me and see, for a spirit has no flesh and bones". Doesn't make any sense. The Quran clears up the confusion.
